It was hard to believe that already once she had failed the name Lexig. Last games she hadn't done a thing to aid or guide Septys, nothing until those last few days. No amount of sorry, no amount of could haves and would have would make it better. Septys could have come home if she had been a better mentor. But the problem was that she hadn't.It was fine and everything to wish that she had tried, that she had given it her all. But saying that about the past wasn't going to make Quadrys any less pissed off if he knew. Honestly, she didn't plan on telling him, she didn't need her future tributes to despise her anymore then they probably already did. Scout wanted nothing to do with her, "you're a useless piece of piss," "can you keep anything alive? Are you sure that son of yours is even alive -not dead is he?" The earful she had received early this morning had been enough to make sure Opal stayed away. But she wasn't like herself last year, she would try again with the sarcastic shit, later, maybe tomorrow, or the next day. She had time, and Scout seemed like she was capable of looking after herself, if rumours about the Fray family were to be held accountable it seemed that the twin children were very familiar with killing.

It seemed that Scout was determined to do exactly what she wanted, and Opal hoped that Quadrys wouldn't have to suffer too much under her barbed tongue. After meeting the girl she was sure that no one would escape unscathed. Clearing her throat she made her way into the dining room. This would be a good opportunity to talk to Quadrys, at least, and with an ease of mind knowing she wouldn't have to wait for the next insult to be thrown at her. As always she piled on the strawberries, adding a few other types of fruit, before sitting herself down at the table.

"So-" She choked over the word, as she leaned forwards in her chai, directing her gaze towards Quadrys. Guilt settled itself into her chest, but she buried it, she buried it, just as quickly as she had last year and the year before, and for each of those seven years there was another load. It wasn't so difficult anymore, to get rid of it. She wondered, though, how it ate at her, she couldn't see the effects yet. "Do you have any questions, Quadrys?"

Today is the day that I realised that I could be loved- "He wasn't our son; he belonged to everyone."

For dinner, I grab the smallest piece of chicken on the platter, a tiny scoopful of broccoli, and roughly sixteen shells of pasta. I'm not hungry, and I've never really had much of an appetite, but the glares of my peers and the overheard whispers of how scrawny I am urge me to eat something- if anything- to get them off of my back. It sits untouched on my plate for however long it takes Opal to get her own food and take seat in front of me, but considering I never even saw her enter, I'm not exactly sure how long that really was. Either way, I stab one of the yellowed noodles with my fork and place it into my mouth softly. Macaroni and cheese. The taste of home.

It's a moment before either of us acknowledge each other and it's her that initiates the conversation before I can even say hello. "So- do you have any questions, Quadrys?" I don't answer right away, and I even think about saying the cheesy response of 'how do I win' simply to fill the time that is quickly passing. But I don't, and instead work towards thinking of legitimate phrases as to not waste the girl's time. She could be what makes or breaks my time here in the capitol and if I don't gain her friendship and trust, I could die far sooner than even the most cynical would expect.

I take a deep breath and finally decide on what to say.

"How was he?" My breath hitches in my throat for a moment, though it goes unseen, and I push another noodle around on my plate before picking it up with the tip. "Y'know. Without his family?" This must not be easy for her to talk about, but it pains me to think that on the television screen, he seemed so.. happy. I'm curious, and I'd rather tackle this feeling before it kills me, just like it did him, and the other 22 who died last year. Whether or not it was obvious, there's always that little voice in your head telling you what decisions to make and that will- the very will that has killed millions, and billions, and possibly even trillions- involves one of those choices pulsating out further than the others. It makes you think of what will happen with your very movements and it's terrifying that everyone both in game and out rely on a chance system to keep them alive.

I sigh quietly and move my fork up to my lips again, this time keeping the shell on my tongue before swallowing it whole. I need to get my head away from these thoughts and away from these outcomes, but every time that I try to stray, I'm pulled right back in again, as if I belong here. I don't. So I let her answer, and I wait patiently, the soft tip-tap-toeing of my foot against the floor as the only haven to keep me company. For now at least, I have some solid ground to hold onto.

Because everybody dies.

If she could have she would have cursed out loud for her own stupidity, for hoping that he just, simply, wouldn't ask. The fork in her fingers slipped from her grasp, rattling loudly against the table. That had been an impossible dream to ask for. After all it had been last games, she had been his mentor. She just hadn't wanted this to happen and so soon, when she knew if she told him the truth he'd probably look away from her, ignore her. She truly, truly didn't want that, she couldn't bear the thought of him turning away and sending her off, deciding that he'd be better off without her. But she doubted her pleas of how much she needed this would fall on deaf ears. Because she did, she needed to aid him, to help him to begin repenting for six years of mistakes.

She'd already lost one of her tributes, Scout wanted nothing to do with her, she couldn't lose Quadrys as well. Did she tell him? Tell him and hope he'd forgive her for doing nothing for him? Ah, but you see, the thing was, Opal Earnest was a coward, and her heart was far too vulnerable to be bared, naked before him.

Swallowing stiffly, she averted her gaze, hoping that he'd misread her open uncomfortableness for a simple unwillingness to talk about the topic. Her fingers found her fork again, and she played with the metal, suddenly unwilling to take a bite of food, her appetite gone. Not even the strawberry's looked appealing. "I-" She cleared her throat, eyes shifting around the room, looking everywhere, but at Quadrys. "We didn't really talk a lot about family," the broken truth. "We focused more on the games," liar, "you know, survival," liar, "the important stuff," liar, liar, liar.

What was she supposed to say? "And you? How are you coping?" She finished lamely.

She avoids my question indirectly, and what's sad is that I wouldn't have known that she was lying had I not spent hours in front of the TV watching him. It's pathetic that I put so much effort into keeping myself level throughout the 71st, only for it to collapse into the shallowness of my personality; there were school days missed in which I was too absorbed in his survival to get off of the couch, yet my education didn't suffer one bit. My teachers were kind, and patient, and willing to trade me for things that I didn't have.

Here though, I simply nod. There's no bartering involved when it comes to understanding what pains others, and I realise this fully when the piece of chicken that was tethered to the end of my fork falls free-style back onto the plate. I grip the handle tighter and try again, this time moving it to my lips before it even has time to adjust. The air grows tenser, and I try to listen in anywhere else but here to no success.

"And you? How are you coping?" Truth is, I'm fine. But I fear letting her know that; I'm supposed to be the passionate brother fighting for his bloodline's legacy, not the next merciless career built and bread for the death of 23 others. She seems to have a grasp, though, and I decide against my former beliefs, my mouth parting slightly to respond.

"Oh, I mean- I was made for this right?" With a small chuckle, I push my food around mindlessly before setting my fork down with a gentle touch on the rim. "So I'd say that I'm doing.. dandy. Yeah, that's the word. Dandy." I'm not quite sure if I come off as sarcastic, but honestly, I'm not exactly sure of what my intentions were in the first place.

Because everybody dies.

Not for one moment did she agree with that response. beneath the words there was a layer of honesty, she could tell. He was okay, he wasn't panicking or freaked out. That was obvious enough, but he wasn't that refined, cruel image of a career. Quadrys was no Scout Fray, a machine that had been designed to kill, that thrived off chaos and death. He was a sociopath like her, he wasn't psychotic, so she couldn't take that response without biting her lip, confused by those words. He must have known that Opal carried the title career as nothing more then a title, she'd never openly spoken of her upbringing, in fact she'd told numerous amounts of people that she wasn't a career. Of all the people he could of told that to, he was saying that to the wrong person.

"Made for this? You're not Scout, you're not an unfeeling sociopath." She frowned, drawing her arms onto her lap as she looked him in the eye. "No one was made to be a killer, some people are born as sadistic people, some people choose that path, but being raised to fight doesn't make you capable of killing." Was she saying the wrong thing? Shouldn't she tell him that he was exactly right, that he should have no problem at all with killing because this was everything he'd been told to do since he'd been old enough to walk?

"It's not easy to kill."
