Everything had a breaking point.

It was something she had learned slowly as blacks and browns spread beneath her skin like spilled paint no matter how much she willed them away, trying to accept that her blood was a poison and that's why her body kept trying to get rid of it. (They had told her what, but never why. These were the symptoms, but there was no rhyme or reason to them. To her they seemed chaotic. Unreasonable. Ridiculous. Like her own body had declared war on her.)

And sometimes she found it, that delicate point inside her, when Aiden couldn't catch his breath through the coughs, or when Alex shot her suspicious looks across the breakfast table. In those moments she felt herself just ghosting along the edge, tipping toward a fall that would certainly shatter her but then always pulling back at the last moment. It was a dance she'd been performing for a long time, ever since Death came to settle itself in her life.

And again, she found it here. In the form of a sobbing girl whose family had already lost one to this vicious game. And even though Danny knew that she was horrible with emotions, that she was only good at really talking when she was with Aiden (and maybe Basil, but that was different because he was an artist), the image looked too much like Alex when their parents would hurt her feels for Danny to just turn away. Instead she approached the girl, tugging the collar of her shirt up to hide a bruise.

What was she supposed to say in a situation like this?

"I, um - I'm sorry, do you need help?" She frowned, trying to think of the things that kept her whole when she felt close to tumbling into the abyss. "Or a drink?"
