In a world where suffering is the norm, you can honestly say you have it worse than most.

You've lost cousins, a sibling, even a parent to the cruel reality that is life. You've seen loved ones snatched up before your eyes, powerless to do anything to stop them. You've felt screams of agony, burning tears of anguish, convulsions of grief as the inevitable happened.

Luna was slain facing death in the eye, taunting a group of murderous Careers. Sol fell from grace, leg cut out from beneath him by one he had called a friend.

And they were just two of many.

Two more blows to your very being that you were forced to absorb, to endure, to fight through. You were but a child when the moon crumbled, and almost a man when the sun was extinguished, yet that made the pain no easier to bear. But where they had failed, you had stood strong, resilient, like the very ground beneath your feet. Through the tears and the anguish, you pushed through, to the next day.

After all, it was hardly the first time such an event had befallen you.

Estrella had been kind like Luna, compassionate like Sol, a perfect blend of what had been good in your closest cousins. The Shim family wasn't small, and there were others that still carried the name with pride, but the two of them had been by far the closest, both in blood as children of your father's brothers, and in friendship. Sol had been your age, albeit older by a few months, while Estrella had been Luna's senior by three years. Despite the age differences, the four of you were as thick as thieves growing up. Your sister was the self-proclaimed guardian; as oldest of the four, it was her job to keep the rest of you safe and out of trouble. And it was a job she had done well, for none of the rest of you came to harm.

That was before the fateful day in early spring, when a power plant had malfunctioned, creating a small, localized explosion in a breached valve.

As far as natural or unnatural disasters went, this one was hardly noteworthy. Nothing major had been disrupted, and a mere eight people had been unlucky enough to be caught in the vicinity of the blast.

Tragically, two of those eight were your elder sister, fresh into her apprenticeship following her eighteenth birthday, and her mentor, your father.

You had been told that it had been quick, that they had felt no pain, but these were hardly comforts to you.

To die quick means that the death was certain, that the fight was lost from the beginning, that the chance of salvation was none, zero, zilch. If they had been just a bit further from the blast epicenter, had the blast itself been just a little less devastating....

Well, maybe the zero would have turned into something. And something was always better than nothing.

Such was the case when Luna was selected for the annual Hunger Games later that year. She might have died quickly, but there had been a chance.

In retrospect, you found it ironic that she was selected mere months after the death of Estrella, for you knew that she would have sacrificed herself in a heartbeat. You've daydreamed it many times-The long black mane that so much matched yours stepping courageously up to the stage, blue eyes identical to yours glittering in determination. You dreamed of her wading courageously through the bloodbath, fending off the Career pack with her allies, driving a spear through the eye of the monstrous scorpion mutt, beating down the blond district four boy in a long, bloody duel.

All of those were merely fantasies, of course, dreams conjured up to pass the time. That was a job you quickly passed to Sol.

After all, you thought cynically, what point was there dreaming in a living hell?

Things went smoothly for the next five years. You matured from boy to man, the traditional Shim height having not overlooked you as you grew to a respectable six two inches. A modest living has given you a mostly healthy physique lined with lean muscle. A chiseled, sharp jawline compliments a face perpetually set in a serious expression.

You used to smile, once. But now, even after all this time, when you smile, you see too much of your father reflected in your devious grin. Two much of her in the pools of blue that look back at you.

You don't go near mirrors much anymore.

For five years, you slowly healed. You found yourself thinking of your lost family less and less, found yourself engaging in activities instead of sitting in your room day after endless day. Drawing in on the strength of your mother, you persevered, pushed forward. You began to live again.

Despite this, there was no forgetting the fact that the four Shim cousins that had once shared an unbreakable bond had been effectively halved. Sol did his best to pick up where the others had left, as did you. You had your differences, sure - Sol was an optimist at heart, and had always been somewhat of a dreamer, while you were anything but. Despite this, you and him were living proof that opposites did indeed attract; he was your steady place during the worse periods of coping, despite the fact he had suffered just as much as you. In turn, you were the realist, keeping him grounded and down to earth whenever he let his dreams get the better of him.

It was a beautiful reconstruction of something that had once been shattered, but like all beautiful things, it had not been destined to last.

Shortly after the fifth anniversary of Estrella's and Luna's deaths, Sol Shim was selected for the Seventy Second Annual Hunger Games.

The announcement had hit you like a ton of bricks. You had been too shocked, too slow, to raise your hand and take his place. By the time you had mustered enough courage to speak, it was far too late.

And as such, you were forced to watch as the last member of your childhood quartet was forced to fight for his very life like Luna had five years prior. You watched as he became a killer, setting one girl on fire and stabbing two more to their deaths. You watched, as Sol Shim became a demon in his quest for survival.

You watched, tears streaming down your face and throat raw from screaming, as Sol Shim was cut down by his own ally, falling to his death from the cage.

Anger led to sadness led to acceptance led to numbness as the reality of the situation slowly sunk in. Where there had once been four, there was now one. Where you once had had a normal life with two parents and a sibling, you now only had a mother.

It seemed that everyone close to you was destined to die.

Life has ravaged you like it has with few others in your district. It's claimed the lives of so many you have loved, sending them to the home beyond the clouds well before their time. While you might still have family left, including a number of Sol's own siblings, you maintain your distance from them for the most part, unwilling to let the curse extend to yet another member of the Shim clan.

In a world that is virtually a living hell, you have been singled out by the devil himself. But as damaged and numbed as you've become, you refuse to break.

Life may have handed you a particularly terrible card, but you keep pushing forward.

You've vowed to live your life for those that could not, and Ripred be damned if you aren't going to keep that promise for the rest of your days.
