Oceana Staite

"And good God, under starry skies we are lost, And into the breach we got tossed,
And the water's coming in fast! "

She sat, nestled amongst the rattling grasses that littered the crests of the golden dunes that knitted the ocean to the land, a golden thread keeping the two worlds closely tied together. A soft wind blew through the reeds which rustled happily, dancing in the golden sunlight which rained down on the beach; the wind bought crisp ocean air with it, sickly sweet with salt.

Oceana's eyes focused on the little boy, her cousin, dancing about the sand where the sea fell against the hard earth, grasping at her with desperation before the tide tugged her away. You almost smile as you watch him, playing. A fond memory of him and the others, dancing about the golden sands with Daria. Her name causes the smile to only merely be a ghost, washed away by the wind.

The wind blows, Yoel's laughter erupts over the world and then, suddenly, silence. The world suddenly falls still and it causes her hair to stand on end as the crisp sense of fear washes over her. Oceana stands, her eyes glancing around before they move to fall on her cousin but something catches her attention; the sea, tearing itself away from her lover, the land, retreating towards the horizon.

"Yoel...." Oceana calls out nervously

Y O E L S T A I T E

Planting his feet into the sand, every movement he makes leaves an imprint in the moist sand. His mind lost in adventure as he battles the waves that try to latch onto his ankles. Fighting against the lukewarm tide, he leaps in the air, tackling the natural obstacle. Blowing around him, he is un-fazed by the ever strengthening sea breeze as his full focus is on the game that he has set himself to play. Everything that surrounds him is blocked out from his senses as he attempts to succeed his goal of jumping the small current that reaches the shallow ends of the sea.

Behind him, his cousin sits. He has notice a change in his family…ever since Daria…but he continues. He continues to try and put a smile on their faces. He can’t live amongst all the frowning people.

Continuing to kick the surface of the water, splashes of the ocean reach as far as his face as his body is soaked from temple to toes. His dark green vest and grey shorts painted with the water.

Falling to the surface of the sand, he is beaten by the tide as it clasps onto his legs, dragging him down. Placing his hands onto the wet sand, he tries to push himself to his feet but something catches his attention. Fixing his eyes onto the water, the natural beauty changes its mood in front of him and it slowly adjusts his own. Worry sends a tsunami of emotions across his body, eradicating the happiness that once lived there. ”Yoel…” His name is called behind him.

Shuffling across the sand on his knees, he tries his best to retreat from the army of waves.

”Help Oceana…”

I trace these maps I'd drawn before the previous storm. Following dotted lines through my mind only to be lost and found within the security of my own head. Feather feet on the land are left in my wake, which are only swallowed whole by the mouth of the sea. Like breaths of a shaken soul, I watch as the water comes in and out to turn this holy ground to a sinner's Earth.

No serenity, no mercy—Poseidon's wrath begins to retrace naive lines drawn by my younger self.

Glass over the horizon and I spy silhouettes which dance in the breeze like angels with broken wings. Beauty sews them into the scene securely, and frustration puts them into a world of slow motion. Falling together and apart at the same time, I find myself stood over the tear of the ripping picture.

One foot on the left, one placed to the right.

Short poems are called out from the landscape. I move across the rocks with curled toes, frustration drawn in my brow as the figures turn from blurs to humans, from humans to family.

Yoel and Oceana are divided by the sand. My brother caught between the jewels of the water's crown, my cousin standing in the forgotten as her face remains cold.

I do not flinch, I do not twitch or inhale as I watch it unfold from the silence.

I am stone.

Taken over by the weakness I'd hidden with this map, I witness my own fall in the moment and become statuesque.

Yet my morals cannot keep me under these chains, and I wade through the dunes to investigate the preventable tragedy before me.

Consumed in silence, I emerge from the sea mist.

Oceana rose to her feet, the sand shifting beneath her weight, toppling down the crest of the dune. The granules pittered to a stop, rolling at the crest of the downward slope before the wind took them up and they were carried downwind, into the distance, never to be seen again.

Blue eyes met blue eyes, and a desperate call for help erupted over the wind, fighting against the tide of it as it carried over the air and reached Oceana's ears. Her gaze moved from her cousin, to the distant ocean blue, disapating at the touch of the world.

If there was nothing Oceana feared more, it was the deep abyssl blue which clung to the shoreline; but now it was gone. Despite this, a thread of fear still began to intertwine itself with Oceana as she began to run across the golden expanse towards her fallen friend. She did her best to ignore it, grabbing Yoel by his hands and pulling him up.

"Are you okay??" she asked quietly, her voice timid as her eyes glanced to the darkhaired girl who stood on the crooked rocks "Silvia!" she called, holding onto Yoel's hand tightly, afraid deep down "...Why has the sea gone? Can...you see anything?"

Face meeting the sand, the water would fill Yoel’s throat, charging the bitter gritty taste into his gut. Yearning for a pure water to put of the horrid blazing fire that is scorching his mouth, Yoel would raise his head from the waning puddle, turning to the ocean in front of him. Expecting to be picked up and taken away with the tide, the complete opposite unfolds in front of his eyes. Quickly the ocean retreats from the shoreline, waving goodbye to the land…

What is it doing? He questions as his cousin drags him up from the ground. "Are you okay??" Only confusement charges across him as well as the virulent taste of seawater that still remains within his mouth, but he is okay. ”Yes,I am fine.” A slight frustrated sigh follows his words. Dragged along by his cousin, his eyes still remain on the reducing shoreline. Yoel’s curiosity floods across his mind, too juvenile to know the exact natural phenomenon that is reciting in front of him.

Standing on the rocks, his vision transitions onto his sister but curiosity didn’t run on a familiar face as he quickly turned his attention back to the retreating marine. Maybe the Capitol are harvesting the sea, they’re probably punishing us. Unwise explanations present a slide-show in his head, as he switches off from the presence of Oceana and Silvia.

The wind picks me up and draws me forwards, like a pawn moving to the front of the chess board knowing it'll face being eliminated.

My eyes close for a short moment and I become lost in the symphonies of the sea: the sweeping waves and the crashing against the rocks, my footsteps crunching the sand and my bones rattling with every delicate movement I make.

Determination forces me not to slip and fall into the freezing drift coming inland, composed of what it takes to reap a life and not care.

But still, fall seven times and stand up eight—there's solace in this Sturm und Drang.

"Silvia!" Calls the figure. My eyes narrow before the realisation comes; it's Oceana. She calls, palm to palm with my brother, trembling heartbeat and worry in her breath—I'm taught to sense fear from miles away.

"...Why has the sea gone? Can...you see anything?"

"I don't understand." I say, picturing happier times of playing on the warm sands and feeling it worm up between my toes. Feeling a summer breeze and being weightless: no cares or pressure here, just a pledge to live for now.

I blink, and am lulled to reality by the panting of my blood brothers.

"It was so big and so blue. But it's just, gone."

Gone was something I had never been afraid of. Eternally gone, never coming and going; just gone. It was my escape when I was runaway. A phase of being strangled by insecurities and promising to slay them someday but never getting round to doing it.

Gone was much easier then. But now that it isn't me—I inhale and smell my own fear.

Another sleepless night becomes trapped in my mind.
