It wasn't easy growing up with a well-known name, especially when said name had achieved its notoriety through failure as opposed to success.

When you first heard the name Krearns echo throughout the town square, you were but a little child, far too young to understand why, exactly, the entire district had to gather in one place at the same time.

You vaguely remember cousin Mason stepping up to a podium along with some random girl, a hint of a smile across his face as if he had just won some contest. Though the implications of such an event were ultimately far beyond your understanding, you remember feeling happy, pleased that he had gotten chosen for something that momentous.

You never saw him again.

As you grew older, you slowly began to realize that, no, he had not indeed been selected for something grand or special.

Cousin Mason had been sent to compete in the annual Hunger Games, and had promptly proven to be an embarrassment to the Career district by getting cut down in the Bloodbath of all places, condemning the Krearns name to a laughingstock in the process.

The realization it you like a sack of bricks. Suddenly, it all made sense why the other kids laughed at you once they learned your name, why you were shunned and generally ignored by the general school body, why some of the adults scrunched their faces in disgust whenever you walked by.

Participating in the Games was an honor reserved for few, but among Careers it was expected to at least finish in the top half, or put up a good fight trying. Death in the Bloodbath was a stain that was nearly impossible to erase.

Sure, future members of the family didn't have to worry about the pressure of living up to their sibling's records and reputation. But in a way, it was almost worse that way - it took years for names to be forgotten among the Capitolites that provided sponsors, and they were more likely to spite a relative of a bloodbath victim than they would a promising tribute from an outer district.

But as you grew older, it looked as if for a while that the Krearns family would outlive the curse created by Mason's passing. One, two, three, four, five games passed without one of your dark-haired cousins stepping up to the stage.

Then, Jay decided to volunteer.

In retrospect, it made a lot more sense. The kid that had been chosen instead had had a younger sibling, one too young for the Reapings, much like Jay himself had been back when Mason had been selected. Thinking back on it, you hypothesize that such an event must have struck a particularly painful chord within him.

And so, you watched with dark eyes stretched wide and mouth open in disbelief as another Krearns entered the death games.

Jay actually did pretty well to start with, successfully making it out of the bloodbath along with a pair of lower district allies. Yet that proved to be his undoing, as well, as a combination of darkness and incompetence led to your cousin being struck down by his own so-called ally.

You had been too young to clearly remember Mason's death, but you remember Jay's like it had happened last week. You had watched through Capitol-enhanced cameras through the darkness as first one, then the other of his allies had lashed out blindly, striking him with grievous wounds that ultimately led to his death. Jay fell, writing notes on cave walls and cursing out his killer before his voice, and his life, finally gave out.

Two Krearns had now entered the Games. And two had failed to get out, both being among the first quarter to die.

If Jay's district partner that year hadn't been even more incompetent, that might have spelled the end of the Krearns' chances of popularity in their district and the Capitol alike.

Yet that did little to deter you from training yourself. If anything, it made you work twice as hard once you finally were allowed to begin your own Career training. Each day, you pushed yourself to your limit, the images of your two fallen cousins flashing across your mind.

You didn't care about their legacies or their failures or any of that bullshit, contrary to popular belief. Sure, you missed them, Jay in particular cause he was closer to your age, but they had brought dishonor to your name, dishonor to your family, and dishonor to anyone with a hint of Krearns blood within them. It was cause of them that you resented your dark hair and dark eyes that clearly marked you as one of the dishonored's kin, and Ripred be damned if you were going to let yourself suffer a similar fate.

You would be the one to bring redemption to the Krearns name, be the won that finally brought the crown back to Four after only one victory in recent memory.

But then the Seventy First rolled around, and Someith intervened.

You were always a little intimidated by your cousin. Several years your senior, he had always had a bit of an odd air around him. Still, you had never really interacted or even seen him as you were growing up, so when he volunteered, for a moment all you could think of was wait, who?

Then, the Games began, and you instantly regretted ever wondering just who Someith Krearns really was.

For a while, it looked like he would follow in the footsteps of his predecessors, losing a hand in the bloodbath and a member of his alliance in rapid succession. But that was before he struck out on his own, before the world would see what he really was capable of.

He slaughtered a muttation on the third day and wrote a message in its entrails. He met up with a girl from Eleven who seemed to be the only one who could match him in personality, only to stab her through the eye socket two days later. He then slaughtered a Career boy from Two with minimal effort, taking only a single deep would in the process, before killing the boy's district partner the next day.

Just like that, a Krearns was on the edge of glory for the first time ever.

But then he had been ganged up upon by another Career boy and a hulk from Eleven, and that had proved to be his undoing.

Someith had single handedly brought an amount of respect back to the Krearns name, and had been the closest from Four to reach the crown since Krigel and Baitwell had clashed in the final. Yet you had been progressively more repulsed by him and his actions as time had gone on, and when he had finally been cut down, your first emotion was one of relief instead of disappointment.

Somehow, you didn't think you'd miss him quite as much as you would Jay.

Despite the eccentricities of your cousin, there was no denying that he had pulled your family back from the abyss. But it took more than the actions of one dead tribute to redeem a name, even one that finished in the top four. Your work was far from over - on the contrary, it was just beginning.

As one of a handful of reapable Krearns left in the district, you've doubled your focus and intensity towards your training, to the point where it is more of an obsession than a hobby. Your too-thin body may have matured and become lined with lean muscle over the past few years, but you're still on the small side, standing at a mere five feet six inches and weighing around 130 pounds. There was no way you were going to overpower a fully trained Career male from Two with physical strength alone, so instead you focus more on the art of speed and agility, preferring to dance around an opponent with a pair of knives as opposed to a spear or a sword.

As you've grown, you've become more confident in your heritage as well, wearing it like a suit of armor as opposed to a mark of shame. The dark hair that branded you as a member of clan Krearns, once kept short and hidden, has since grown out to reach your shoulder blades, and the dark eyes that similarly mark you are held up with a firm, steely gaze as opposed to resting around foot level.

You're still a rather shy, quiet girl, not quite as outgoing or sociable as many teens, but you prefer it that way. You figure that if you make less attachments and focus more on yourself than on others, say, a band of incompetent allies or some random girl in the district square, you'll be more likely to emerge from the Games alive should fate send you into the arena. You've learned to keep these opinions mainly to yourself after you learned that most view such sentiments as heartless and apathetic, yet you still hold them firm. You've learned from watching Jay that following your heart over your head can cause you to leap into a situation before you were fully prepared, and you've learned from countless other tributes that making attachments in the arena only lead to one's downfall.

After all, when it really comes down to it, the only person you can truly rely on is yourself.

You're approaching your final Reaping years yourself, and as you get closer and closer to ineligibility, you must consider where your ultimate destiny lies.

Will you allow yourself to be passed over like so many before you and focus on a life that doesn't revolve around Career training? Will you volunteer for some random girl and step up for the stage yourself for a chance at wealth and glory? Or will fate choose for you, much like it did with cousin Mason, and select you for the Reaping, watching and wondering if someone was going to take your place as tribute.

Only time will tell.
