I can't sleep. Each adjustment I make to feel comfortable, it hurts. Every attempt to move or get into a different position, it hurts. Everything hurts. Though, this pain is only mild considered to the pain one may face through their journey of the Games. I'm only just witnessing the beginning, getting a small taste of what is to come. How kind of them, preparing me for pain.I almost feel like I should thank them.

A laugh, light and doubtful escapes my lips at that. It's odd to think that in such a dark place you'd find someone laughing. But it's even more odd to think that my child will only know my crown of life or death. And, if they live to see me and I to see them, the crown will never be removed.

I drift in my thoughts through the night due to the unbearable idea of sleep. It's a cave where if you're not gonna look where you're going you could end up with a knife in your eye. Dead. Nothing to remain in the once filled with life. We have no difference in life or death in this place because all of the life inside of it turns to death. I think of all of the people back at home probably hoping I come home on a personal level- Marzanna, Blair, Blanche, Ike. They all care in a sense, right?

I awake from my thoughts and look over at Minos for a second, knowing he's still awake just like me. We're both in pause of the practice of sleeping, but the wave of sleepiness washes over me slowly and it causes a yawn to emit from my throat. I know he must be tired too, or at least getting close to it, so I speak.

”Hey there, bud.” I give a small smile, reassuring in a sense. ”I'm gonna sleep, I suggest you do the same. Alright?” I raise an eyebrow in his direction even though I doubt he can fully see my expression. I worry about him- the only source of humanity I feel like I can find. He sighs, looking up to the lost constellations that dance in the sky. The cave gives no stars, no stories to learn or be told during the night. It's blank. No emotion, no story. Just a damned ceiling of rock.

”In a second.” Minos says, distant in the presence. Reassuring. I place my head onto the wall that I've been resting on for the time passing, and the world seems to envelope me in it’s next dimension.

I wake up to feel a pair of arms wrapped around my torso. It feels distant but normal, like it's a regular thing to happen. It reminds me of Blanche. Days where we often woke up entangled in each other. But she's the only one that would do that, right? Was it all a dream so far? The pain, the death of two innocents? A glance down speaks otherwise, removing the idea.

Wrapped around my torso is Minos Vallanso instead of Blanche. It feels odd knowing that it's not her. But it feels nice, it reminds me of home in a sort. It feels odd knowing that this was someone that may die in the next twenty four hours. It feels nice because it reminds me of the happiness in my life. It feels nice because that normally shows a feeling of protection when you're with that person.

Though, knowing the schedule of the Games, we must get a move on due to the arrival of something soon. I move his arm off and slowly move around the best I can to gather my items. Backpack, check. Bow and arrows, check. I then move over to Minos and nudge him lightly because the other two have woken up by now and he has yet to. ”You might want to wake up, we've got to get moving soon.” I speak to him with a cautious tone placed into my words, as if I didn't want to scare him or something. Minos awakes and just as easily replies like he's been awake for the past twenty minutes, giving a small joking remark. ”But I wanted to cuddle more.” He says it with a whine in the tone of his voice and I couldn't help but give a small chuckle at that.

Soon enough, we all had made the silent agreement to start moving, and we do. Minos stays back with me as a balance of sorts due to my leg, and thank god he was so I wouldn't fall. Every other step is a grimace to flash on and off of my face, like its on a rotation of sorts.

And the pit of fire nearby is not reassuring in my eyes, looking at the red and orange flames licking the air. Though, the three little structures of bone don't seem very reassuring either. They are programmed to kill us after all, right?

I pull out and arrow and shoot a the damn things before they can take a shot at us.

The pale amber glow of the golden lake swallowed the darkness whole, glittering tendrils of mites dancing over the swell of gold; its soft smolder reminded Hypatia of the sunset against the dark. Sunset, sunrise, these things were not part of this hellish arena where fire and brimstone reigned over the darkness, they were all but a distant memory now. There was no sun to shine upon them, no moon to signal that it was time to rest; time had no hold on this dominion, what with no distinguishing passing of time but despite this its chaos still lingered. She could feel the tide of it, pulling them deeper into oblivion.

And the oblivion had already taken two of them. There had only been 2 canon shots that day, but after the bloodbath the arena had fallen into a tense silence. As Hypatia looked at the spine of paper, jagged yet soft, where she had torn a page from her book and given it to the dying Renee, the sky flittered awake, the ceiling of the vast cavern and ghosts appeared there. Renee, her ghostly image appeared in the sky, her sultry smirk watching them all before it burnt away into embers, dancing away to reveal another ghostly face with no name. As the little girls eyes faded into the oblivion, Hypatia wondered when her friends sands of time would abruptly come to their chaotic end.

As dullness set, the anthem fading away into the vast pestulant silence around her, Hypatia looked back at her notebook, thumbing through the empty pages. She had a handful of moleskin notebooks, just like this one, back in District Three. Filled to the brim with ideas and thoughts, passing memoris and music notes and yet this was one new, bare and it saddened her that not all the pages would be filled or torn from their roots to be cast away with a dying friend, or hidden between the wall and the wardrobe in the Capitol or snuck away in between two books in the Justice Building. This would be her last book, she could feel it.

Time swayed around her and she could feel it, draining her of energy but sleep barely came. The girl tossed and turned and lay awake staring into the empty void of darkness which filled the cavern. The darkness was waiting for her behind her eyelids too, the terrifying emptiness that reminded her that it would all come to this one day; not just her, but the world. It would plummet into darkness and come undone, as the second law of thermodynamics stated, everything must continue towards chaos.

Eventually the morning did come, slowly, shifting her to a vague state of being awake. Natalie shook her shoulder, urging her to get up but Hypatia was tired and just wanted to sleep some more but even she knew that wasn't possible, even if she had been alone. She needed to move on, to continue forward as time permitted and she couldn't well do that curling into a ball like a coward, like a failure.

Hypatia wasn't a failure.

She got to her feet, tossing her bag over her shoulder and moving forward into the darkness, taking the initiave after Daniel who'd urged Minos to help him walk. Hypatia was unsure where they were going, the darkness didn't bode well for finding places as easily as it may have been in previous arenas where the sun shone during the day, allowing the visibilty to be crisp and clear. It was still dark, like at dusk, but it was hot and sticky. Hypatia's hideously orange shirt clung to her body as they moved towards a glowing pit of orange flame, a beacon of safety in the oblivion.

Suddenly, the ground shuddered beneath their feet. Hypatia paused, looking up into the numbing darkness around her to see movement within its grips. She remembered once that old maps had once said “Danger, there be dragons here” and over time, these signs of creatures of mythos had been erased from cartography all together but apparently, just because the map did not state there were dragons, did not mean there weren’t any.

Grasping her knife, she lunged at the creatures that lurked in the darkness.

WHEN OBLIVION IS CALLING OUT YOUR NAME

Usually, when people wore items of gold, it was a symbol of wealth and respect.

Many people in the Capitol had been adorned in gold, yet another sign of their decadent and spoiled lifestyles. She hadn't really seen the appeal of it -sure, it was shiny, and when mixed with certain fabrics possessed a glow that she herself wished she had back when she was nothing but a seamstress and her biggest worries were finishing up the next dress on time.

However, with each step they took, she was liking the golden casing around her right ankle less and less.

Fucking mutt. Fucking gold puddle.

Fuck this shit.

Her gait had been shifted, her pace slowed by the ever-present weight holding her back. One of her few natural strengths that she had prided herself on was her quick, nimble step. There were many advantages to being light on your feet, and she had frequently utilized the talent.

Now, between the heavy ass flail she carried and the heavy ass boot on her leg, she was no longer light and springy. Instead, she had been reduced to a lumbering, weighed down girl who emitted a clunk sound with every other step.

On top of that, she could swear she could feel the heat rising with each and every step that they took, which only added to her exhaustion.

After what seemed like millennia, the four of them finally stopped for a rest. She was only too happy at that, promptly dropping her flail and her backpack and collapsing to the ground.

Within minutes, exhaustion took over and she was sound asleep.

She was woken up by the sound of music echoing throughout the arena.

Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she gazed upwards, where an artificial light display was flashing along what seemed to be the top of the giant cavern that was the arena.

With a start, she realized that she recognized the giant, distorted face that was currently smirking down upon her.

Renée Perdris was beautiful even in death, even in an image magnified many times its original size. Her face was no longer broken and mangled, her eye no longer a bloody socket, her skin no longer marked with the edge of a sword.

She thought that the Career girl would prefer it that way.

She fades, and Natalie's eyes widen in shock as the fourteen year old from Nine took her place.

Inwardly, she knew that the girl's chances of getting very far were slim. Granted, she seemed like she had known her stuff. She was able to chug bottles of alcohol like water and had a ferocity in her that screamed warrior. But it had been like the case with the kid from Two last year - she was just too young to keep up with full-grown eighteen year olds.

She wondered who had had the guts to go after a kid in the bloodbath.

The anthem faded, and before long, her thoughts had drifted to the wind and her subconscious had once again taken over.

She awoke the next day to Hypatia gently shaking her. After a hasty packing period, the four of them once again set off.

As time passed and the clunking of her golden boot faded into the background noise, it soon became apparent as to why the temperature seemed like it was rising with every step.

Fully illuminated among the darkness of the cavern was a literal pit of flames, burning brightly and brilliantly.

She wiped her brow with one hand, narrowing her eyes from the sudden brightness as they walked closer to the fire.

Damn that's hot.

She was so preoccupied with the warmth that she didn't notice the bone creatures until Daniel shot a crossbow bolt into one.

She whipped her head around to see the bolt enter the leg of one of them, stopping it for a crucial second. Hypatia had already leaped into action, slashing a second creature across its head before nimbly leaping back out of range.

Since when could skeletons move?

Oh wait, since last Games.

The thought is ripped from her mind as the third bone creature lunges towards her, mouth open and claws extended.

There was once a time where she would have yelped in fear and turned tail and ran if a skeleton had appeared out of nowhere with malicious intent.

That time had been well before she had been selected to fight for her life an arena where the chances of her getting out alive were slimmer than she was herself.

So instead of running, she grit her teeth and tightened her grip on her flail, shifting her arms behind her head.

Then, using every last iota of her strength, she swung.

The heavy spiked ball sailed up, up, and then it reached its apex, stretching the chain to its limit before sailing downwards with the force of a wrecking ball.

It connected with the bone creature's skull at full force, smashing it back down to earth with a mighty CRUNCH.

She yanked it back, ready to strike again, but there was no need. The creature's head lay smashed in countless pieces, looking more like gravel than a skull. Its tail gave one last twitch, then was still.

For a moment, all she felt was shock. She, Natalie Brandt, seamstress from the cursed eighth District, had just destroyed a muttation with a single blow.

Then, shock gave way to elation.

A grin broke out across her face, the first real joy she had felt since the Games had began.

Even with no real training outside of the past two weeks, even with a heavy ass boot surrounding her right foot, she had successfully protected herself, and more importantly, her friends.

"Looks like he was boned from the beginning.”

She turns to find Minos grinning at her, and she can't help but laugh in return. "Funny, Vallanso, very funny." she replied.

She turned back toward the fallen mutt, grin still plastered across her face. It still was lying motionless, chunks of skull and bone littered across the ground.

She gave it one last kick for good measure, before turning and returning to the fight.

M I N O S

The amber glow was just a memory now. Renee’s body afloat on the pool of molten gold. The lifelessness in her eyes burning its way into his head, the same lifeless look his dead twin brother had. His mother’s scream now just a memory from the life before, an old life that seemed to never exist to him anymore. A new life unfolding, a life of survive or die, people hunting him down, wanting his head served upon a platter. A life of fear and danger, but Minos wasn’t going to go down easily. Not in the hell that was created just for him and his friends. Eyes wander over to his friends, Natalie Brandt, the golden foot wonder, Daniel Tate, the one legged bearded man, and Hypatia Anning, the silent girl. Three friends who all had the same luck that he had. This was their new life that would end within the week or so. Death hides away in the dark waiting to take their souls away from the world. Minos Vallanso wouldn’t let it happen. Not on his watch.

They all had been moving for awhile, the air still as hot as can be. The heat feeling like it was kissing his skin, pulling sweat out, luckily for him the outfit let more air hit his body, cooling what little bit it could. The sunset orange tank top felt sticky against his body. The hair ties on his wrist shaking about as he walked. A smile on his face as he notices his allies stopping for the night. No words were spoken between them, Minos was feeling better now that he was gone from the scene of Renee’s death. A new calm settling in, only for a storm later on to take them all by surprise. Day and night didn’t really exist, the arena still kept the same darkness, time seemed to not exist in the arena. Another thing to add to the list of things he hated about the arena. Literal hell for everyone there.

The sky above illuminated before them all, Renee’s pretty face staring down before them all. A frown on his face as quickly as Renee’s face disappears. The next face takes him by surprise. A storm of emotions flowing through his body. Percy Delacroix. The young girl who had placed a mustache upon his sleeping form. The girl who downed a bottle of beer like nothing. A girl who he had known even in the slightest. The arena wasn’t a safe place for anyone. The young, the old, the strong, the weak. Anyone and everyone could die. As soon as it had appeared, it vanished. Percy Delacroix was dead. A little girl whose family would be mourning the girl who was killed. The games were just getting started and Minos didn’t want to play anymore.

The night moved on, sorrows forgotten in the darkness of the arena. A sudden want to mourn the death of the two fallen hits him, but it’s too late. He has to live for them. For the fallen. A living corpse mourning the death of two. A sigh escapes his throat as a yawn fills the void of darkness. Daniel’s words hit him softly making his smile slightly, ”Hey there, bud.” No words could be said to Daniel, the man who could barely walk away. The soft words flow in the darkness, calming his sense of fear, ”I'm gonna sleep, I suggest you do the same. Alright?” Daniel make him feel calm and secure, no reasoning behind it, but the way he seems to be calm in every situation cools him to his core. A phrase comes out of his lips before he can stop it, Percy’s death still on his mind, ”In a second.”

The world was filled with darkness, but Daniel made some light in his dark life. It was weird for him, never before did he know how the light was, until Daniel’s calm came into his life. The games were eye opening, even if it meant facing death head on, Minos would do it again no matter what would happen, as long as he got to feel the light again. Percy and Renee had fallen to the darkness, but with Daniel next to him, he wouldn’t go, unless Daniel dies or Minos dies protecting Daniel. Someone deserved to live, and it definitely isn’t him.

His hands and feet crawl to the sleeping form of Daniel. The hardened look he had was softened as he slept, rather adorable for what he could see. Minos came up with a plan to have something to hold onto. Something to anchor him down and make sure the world was real. Minos Vallanso moved his hands around Daniel’s torso. Holding on and feeling the warmth that was radiating off of Daniel’s body. A sigh of calm and soon his eyes drifted to sleep. The last thought in his mind before he drifts away to darkness, I’ll protect you.

The morning came quicker than he thought, a nudge on his arm and he was awake. He felt cold, Daniel had already woken up and left him there. The man who woke him up made Minos smile his typical smile, that was there when surrounded by the friends who he enjoyed being with. Daniel’s voice fills his body with a calm, ”You might want to wake up, we've got to get moving soon.” Minos wanted to whine, but whining wasn’t cute, so instead he jokingly whined at Daniel, ”I wanted to cuddle more.” The chuckled that escaped the District Seven’s male’s lips filled Minos with a new happiness. The chuckle would be filed under things about Daniel that rocked, along with his beard. That beard was glorious and Minos enjoyed how it fit on his face.

Standing up now, Minos checked his empty pack. The pink backpack still was there and a bit of an eyesore in all honesty, but a memory of the night with Atticus still upon his skin. A smirk and then the weapon, a horn sharpened just like the knife that Minos had used to kill his brother. As soon as they made a move to head towards the next area, Minos let Daniel balance off of him. A smile shared to Daniel as they walked along. The flames in the next area gave light to the area. The heat was almost unbearable as it licked upon his skin. Bones stand waiting for them all. And then the chaos came.

Daniel’s arrow hits first. The first one seems to be injured in some way, and Minos feels scared, but courage raged through him as Daniel had attacked with no fear. Hypatia attacked the second one, another injury on a different one. The surprise though was Natalie. Her flail slamming down upon the skull of the third one. The shattering making Minos jump, yet feel adrenaline. His words flow out quickly, ”Looks like he was boned from the beginning.” A slight chuckle escapes his body. The horn flies towards the one Daniel attacked. His thoughts going wild in his head. He struck upon it, hoping to connect. Minos Vallanso had to pull his own weight in the alliance, after the failure to do so in bloodbath. I’ll protect them.

We sniff and scratch in the darkness and the flames eat the flames inside of us and we eat the flames inside of it and we are a circle, the Mother connects us all with her bountiful flame and we are complete again.

We scratch and play in the cave dirt and flame falls between us, between and through our bones, no barrier to separate us from the oustides and ins. Fle tackles Me and Eth tackles Fle and we are a whirling mess of yipping and bones cracking and clacking against each other.

We are three, three are we.

Then a sound comes in the dark and as three we turn our heads to see the ones that enter. Four enter here, four and they are not a three, but an individual lump sum. Their tails do not tangle in a tether and their talons do not click together as missing pieces of a puzzle. They walk on two and in their four they hold metals and blooded things.

They see us and they stride. They see us and want to hide.

We see them and we know that we are three.

Fle jumpes forward, teeth clicking and they smash him to pieces on the ground. His bones shatter and Eth screeches, loud and inside of me as it comes out of him. Eth never had patience, he scrambles at the four, hissing, tongue snaking, and they smash his skull into the ground.

It's just me left.

Three has become negative two.

Mother protect me, it's just me. I scuttle under a rock. They will not see me here. I am made of earth and bone, it is safe. The Mother knows now, she must know. Fle has fled into the great fire in the sky and Eth has become so much ether. I don't know what to do, today was going so well before the ungainly half-wit skin covered peach things with their sharps and heavies came along.

The Mother would be mad.

The Mother would be angry.

If I do not even lift a claw to seek vengeance for my brethren, the Mother would be madder still.

We must be three.

I scuttle out from under my rock and I raise my talon at the girl with a fire inside her head.

And from the darkness they come.

The ground shudders beneath Hypatia's in feet in fear as the beasts slink from the darkness, their growls come once, then twice, then thrice. A gasp escaped the young girls lips as the three step into the glow of the pit of flames, the fire dancing around their boney armour gracefully, giving their pale skin an omunious reddish glow, one which matches their eyes- three pairs of which glower down at her friends and her, hungry for blood.

Their movements are swift, and as the first two power down towards Natalie, Daniel and Minos, a third lunges towards Hypatia. For a moment, she is frozen and time hits a standstill, the monsturous creature falling slowly through the void towards her and her mind seems stuck in a repeated cycle, screaming fear inside her head to try vanquish the pestulance of silence; then she screams to herself NOW! NOW HYPATIA! and the world tumbles back into existence.

Hypatia's knife plunges forward, her fist grasping at the carved horn so tightly that her nuckles burnt white, just as the creatures claw extends outwards to caress the side of Hypatia's cheek, going in for the kill. The girl lunges away, catching the creature on the back of the head, stumbling towards the pit of flames. She manages to stop herself, clutching at her cheek as she digs the balls of her feet into the crisp dirt, but she doesn't stop soon enough.

A lick of flame laps at her skin, thirsty for fuel to burn through, dancing against the fabric of her shirt as it attacks her side. Her scream comes first before the smell of burning, dying flesh. Her scream numbs the silence, filling the world quickly with sound but to Hypatia, she can't hear it; silence and a white searing pain engulfs her for a moment and she feels like she is Icarus and that she'd flown too close to the sun; but rather than falling from grace, the fire gives her strength.

She stumbles away from the flame, gritting her teeth, her eyes bursting open. She feels rage boiling in her blood, angry at the beast that had almost got her killed. Where the fuck are you. she snarls, stumbling blindly towards the creature which has taken to Daniel and Minos. Gripping her knife, she runs at the beast, ignoring the screaming pain from where the flames had licked at her body.
