Roger Strangways-Teach wakes up grumpy. Owing to the lack of sunlight, he's not sure if it's the morning or the afternoon or even the next evening. However much time has passed since the previous anthem has been a blur of half-sleeps and half-nightmares, intercut with Scout's intermittent panicked outbursts, all of them followed by the girl burying her face into his shoulder and sobbing incoherently into his beard. He'd catch something that sounded suspiciously like some of the other tributes' names, and try to assure her that [attr="id","rSpeech"]"it's only me, it's okay, It's only me and I've got you" until she cried herself back to sleep.
Echoes of other skirmishes ring through the arena, coloring the cavern with the cheerless din of metal ringing on metal, on stone, on claw and bone. Unsettled, he wonders aloud if they ought to get out of the open. The exhausted pirate is in no mood to fend off the pack of boys that tore Scout half to death. He isn't sure he could. Isn't sure he would. He's fond of the girl he doomed to die, but he's only got one sister and he's already lain down his life for her. When it comes down to it, Roger knows he's too selfish to be fonder of someone he's known for a week than of his own life.
But with no danger lurking, it doesn't mean he won't offer her a piggyback ride away from this hell and into the fresh one that awaits them.
The journey's faster with Scout on his back than if he'd left her to hobble along behind him on her busted foot, but it's slow-going enough that the Krigel girl's had enough time to weave his tangled hair into an intricate braid. And fold pages from her sketchbook into flowers. And stick those between the strands.
He falls into a rhythm: Step, step, step, step. Shift Scout's weight up an inch. Step, step, step, step. The repetition pushes the exhaustion from his brain, patterns and paper replacing the horror he sent himself to face.
For a moment, Jolly Roger forgets that he's walking through hell.
Only for a moment, he remembers peace. It does not last. A blast of hot air rips one, two, three origami flowers from his hair, and he slides his partner off his back — just in time to catch a water jug to the face.
He doesn't have time to look closely — scarcely half a second goes by before a snarling cerberus charges. [attr="id","rSpeech"]"Heads!" he calls in way of warning, and the dog snaps and howls and growls all at once to answer three.
