Maye

Maye yawned and stretched, thrusting her chest out as she reached for the ceiling, before touching her toes and arching her back to accent her rear. Then she turned around and winked at the peacekeeper stationed at the door to the training center. Perv. She thought, as he realized she knew he was watching and looked away. Men. Honestly. Still, wouldn’t hurt to start finding appreciative sponsors now. Maye might have been a pickpocket, a flirt and a skillful manipulator but she was honest. And honestly, the combat stations were going to do fuck all for her.

The only fight she’d been in in the last couple months had involved a lot of hair pulling and slapping. She didn’t know how she was supposed to translate that to throwing knives, axes or swords. No, she’d be focusing on the finer things like making sure she had enough food and water to last the games, how to stay hidden from bloodthirsty idiots and of course, what she did best.

Getting people to like me. No wait, sleight of hand. This a trick question. Has to be.

Twenty-three other people in the arena. Twelve of the male persuasion. She had a lot to work with. And she knew where she’d start too, striding towards the boy from twelve with a bounce in her step.

“Howdy, uh, Mitchell is it?” she said perkily while debating whether to nickname him, Itch, Mitch the Bitch, or Stitches. It was a possibility overload. He was in better shape than she would have expected someone from the coal mining district to be too. Coal wasn’t all that heavy was it? But true to form, he was kneeling by the fire-making station. Made sense. What else would he be good at? Dying from black lung? She leaned over until she her chest was by his face, resting her hands on her knees. “You seem like you know what you’re doing.” She said sweetly.

“Care to show me how? I love it when a good-looking boy lights my fire.” she finished with a bashful smile as she cocked her head to one side.

Fire. It ignites in his soul with every waking moment of the day. A blaze of glory in which he can thrive in. Burning and burning the idea that soon enough that he would turn into a killer just like the bloodthirsty tributes around him. Their eyes would be trained on him in the arena, even if he had to focus them on him himself. Mitchell Laws wasn't meant for the spotlight, but he'd learn how to live with it for the days he would be alive for. As the sparks fly from the items within his hand, the flame ignites upon the wooden items, burning bright and warm. Fires were the reason people survived and died. Long ago, his father told him that fire was the creation of life. A tool used to live longer and provide a man or woman with extra years of life and comfort. Comfort and longevity would not exist within these fires. Only light for death to come sooner.

That's when he heard the voice of Maye in his ear.

“Howdy, uh, Mitchell is it?” All he can do is nod in answer as his hands continue sparking the stones together with ease. District Twelve's were known for their fire capabilities, unlike others. Making a fire was a specialty many of the children had learned at a young age, but Mitchell hadn't. All Mitchell could do was learn how to light a fire from the trainer and practice it like his life depended on it. When in reality, it was probably the least useful of skills he could learn. Maye's voice sweetly comes out of her lips, a compliment that he didn't expect to receive from a girl, especially from someone like Maye. “You seem like you know what you’re doing.” The only problem was the fact her chest was right in his face and all he wanted to do was push her out of his way. Flirting wasn't something he was good at, unlike fire making.

The bashful smile made his stomach flip in annoyance. The words that come out of her lips makes him roll his eyes at her. She was attractive, but Jasper was more of his type than her. Words fall from her lips that makes him want to laugh, but he doesn't. “Care to show me how? I love it when a good-looking boy lights my fire.” Mitchell flaunts the pearly white grin that blessed him at Maye. The girl from District Six seemed interesting in the way she talked to others. He's heard from others how she was, but never would he have expected Maye to flirt with him right off the bat. Attractive was a word he's heard before, but every time someone said it, it lost meaning. That's when he decided to speak up with a joking tone, "Maye be I will show you how. Only if you stop flirting with me." A sigh flows out of his body, just as his smile grows. His words speak the truth. "It's not gonna work. I already have my eyes on someone back home."

Jasper was at home running his little shop and all he could think of was how the kiss affected Jasper. Did he like it? Did he want something with Mitchell? There were so many questions that rang through his mind at the idea of Jasper being stuck with the idea of Mitchell Laws dying. As he watches Maye with caution, he had noticed the item she snagged during the reaping recap. It had been easy for him to see it. Thieves were able to recognize the moment like it was second nature. Mitchell's smile still stuck upon his face as he spoke once again, "The real question is what would a thief like you and me want to do with fire making skills?"

Maye made a show of pouting and fluttering her eyelashes at him for a moment as he shut her down, before straightening up and resting one hand on her hip. “Tsk. Too bad. Bet I could have made you forget all about her,” she said with a wink. “Besides, your eyes are on me right now, unless I’ve spontaneously turned into a crystal ball through which you can see your lover in district twelve.” Maye glanced down at her body, then back to him and shrugged with a smile. “Nope, doesn’t seem like it.” But the joking aside, she took issue with his casual dismissal of the very station he was spending his frickin time at.

“Uh, jeez I don’t know why we’d need this station, maybe to avoid turning into attractive popsicles if the arena is cold? To like, cook raw meat and boil dirty water so we don’t get intestinal parasites?” Maye tapped her finger against and chin and looked up thoughtfully at the ceiling. “Silly me, it’s not like this a valid survival station or anything. “Ooh, I know, it’s worth a look if only so we have a way to make shadow puppets dancing over our soon to be dead competitors!” She laughed and put a hand to her mouth, eyeing him curiously.

He’d referred to both of them as thieves, which upon further reflection after getting through exactly why fire-making could be an essential skill, gave her a bit of pause. He didn’t look like much of a thief; in fact the only thing he appeared to have stolen so far was the charisma trainer’s lack of the ability to have fun. “Besides the fact that I’m a pickpocket and not a thief, I didn’t realize they had that many cameras’ active around the college.” She said with a sniff, stroking the comb in her hair. “I’m sure that girl is cross with me, now that my nicking has been broadcast for all of panem to see, but she’s not the one that got reaped now, is she?”

Maye crouched down next to him and inspected what he was doing with a critical eye. “I’m just interested is all.” She locked eyes with him for a moment and offered Mitchell a teasing grin. “Not in you, just in what you’re doing. There’s not much call for making fires like this in district sex. I mean six.” She giggled at her faux paus and shook her head. “I talk a lot. Sometimes I annoy people. I don’t do it on purpose, I just don’t have a whatdoyucallem, filter? So what do you say, I stop with the flirty you make with the flinty?”

When words fall from Maye's lips, all he can do is feel a wave of words crash into him quickly, that he feels lost within her voice. A pout and a fluttering of her eyes makes him want to gag in humor at her, but he holds his tongue. The words that come forward are not exactly what he had expected, “Tsk. Too bad. Bet I could have made you forget all about her,” A wink follows with the statement and he wants to laugh, but can't allow himself to. “Besides, your eyes are on me right now, unless I’ve spontaneously turned into a crystal ball through which you can see your lover in district twelve.” If only she knew that the one person he was into was actually a him. Jasper Dandarian, working in his little shop, by himself, waiting for the next customer. Mitchell had considered them victims of Jasper's own plan of ripping them off. Mitchell loved that. The way that the people never truly saw it coming like Mitchell did. Jasper was smart, unlike others that he had met.

Her eyes stare down at her body, which if Mitchell was being honest was rather attractive, if he wasn't reaped or going to die within the next few weeks. The shrug that comes with her is cute in his eyes, but he wasn't meant for liking anyone in the arena. Her words fall from her lips again, “Nope, doesn’t seem like it.” A laugh escape for him, only for a moment before he speaks again, "It's a him, not a her. My eyes are on you because my mother always said that I should pay attention to a woman who deserves respect." Mitchell wasn't one to compliment or flirt with anyone, but it couldn't hurt him to try it once. After all, he could be dead within the next few weeks.

Maye's attention switches to his other question of why they should learn fire. Humor and sarcasm within every part of her words. A newfound lightheartedness seemed to flow through his body as he hears her. A little bit of humor can brighten up even the worst of things. “Uh, jeez I don’t know why we’d need this station, maybe to avoid turning into attractive popsicles if the arena is cold? To like, cook raw meat and boil dirty water so we don’t get intestinal parasites?” A joking reaction of rolling his eyes at Maye was a natural reaction. He knew exactly what it was used for, so did she, but he should have known not to ask a stupid question like he always seemed to do. She just continues on with the jokes as he smiles, “Silly me, it’s not like this a valid survival station or anything. Ooh, I know, it’s worth a look if only so we have a way to make shadow puppets dancing over our soon to be dead competitors!” Another laugh escapes from her and from his stiff body, her words sending a humor through his body making his walls fall slowly to her joking and sarcastic ways. Mitchell speaks softly, a chuckle still upon his breathe, "You got me. Fire Making is important."

The topic changes once again to his word of thief. Apparently, she hadn't been a thief like he thought she would have been. Something close to a thief, but not a thief. Pickpocket is the word she used to correct him with. “Besides the fact that I’m a pickpocket and not a thief, I didn’t realize they had that many cameras’ active around the college.” A comb strokes through her blonde hair. “I’m sure that girl is cross with me, now that my nicking has been broadcast for all of panem to see, but she’s not the one that got reaped now, is she?” The broadcast had gone all around panem, but the girl who got pickpocketed by Maye wouldn't know. Only someone who had been paying attention would know. District Six wasn't exactly a district he would expect to pay too much attention to something like the reaping which they had sat through already once. He didn't dare speak his mind out to her, for the fear of being torn down by her words again. Instead, he apologizes for his mistake, "Ahhh, Pickpocket. I'll remember that for next time."

Maye crouches down next to him watch his hands as he works the flint to create another spark upon the wooden sticks. Fire making was something that people expected District Twelve to know all about, but Mitchell didn't know how to light a fire, until he was reaped. Especially not one without items that can be used to make a fire quickly. Patience was something that was needed when creating a fire, especially when a person was on their own. Her words ring in his ear, “I’m just interested is all.” His eyes connect with hers for a second and then the teasing grin was back upon her face. Mitchell knew what was coming. He didn't know anyone that wouldn't have known what was coming. Even his younger innocent brother Carter would have known that Maye was going to say something about being into him jokingly. “Not in you, just in what you’re doing. There’s not much call for making fires like this in district sex. I mean six.” The giggle that follows makes him want to laugh, just for the fact that she was laughing, but he had to be strong. Maye wanted him to let down his guard for her to do something or surprise him. Trust was a person's greatest weapon and weakness. It was a double edged blade that can stab enemies and yourself. Mitchell wouldn't let himself fall for it. "District Sex sounds better. Maybe you'll get a victor for once." The words felt rude, but if Maye heard him right, it was sarcasm. If he was able to pull it off well. Mitchell wasn't exactly a pro at speaking as much as her.

So what do you say, I stop with the flirty you make with the flinty?” Mitchell lets out a sigh of relief for a second. A grin pulls at his lips as he watches her crouching next to him. Blonde hair, blue eyes, everything about her was different from the girls he knew back home, especially different from Hyacinth Mortuus, his district partner. Maye had a fire to her just like a lot of the tributes did, but something about Maye jumped out to him. It could have been that they had similarities or it could have been that they had various differences. He couldn't put his finger on what it was, but in the meantime he was going to help her out. "Talking isn't a bad thing. I'm not very good at talking, I guess." He pauses for a second, contemplating if he even wanted to help Maye from District Sex. She could be leading him on for something in the future. A trick to make him help her out in the arena, which he wouldn't do. Trust was a double edged blade and yet he was going to use it just this once, even if it meant he was going to get cut.

"Sounds like a deal. I'll help you with fire making." A smile finds it's way upon his face. A double edged sword was ready to cut him if he wasn't careful. Mitchell was a risk taker, but he didn't know if this was a risk that would bite him in the back in the end.
