When we pass each other, it's always the same: my eyes move to his, and his eyes meet mine.

Goddamn, he's gorgeous.

He makes a good distraction, thoughts of him and mental images of potential interaction between us dancing in my head to liven up the monotony of what we're here for--blistered hands, wielded axes, chopped down trees.

Man, I'm so fucking gay.

What if I--nah.
But what if he--yeah right.

But still comes a miracle of a window of opportunity when it's time to take a break, because when I look up from watching my fingers trail over each other's calluses, there he is; sitting on a picnic table and having at his lunch.

Oooooooh shit, what am I about to get myself into.

Trembling hands and quickened heart rate, stepstepstepstepstep--oh wait, I should probably get my lunch too.
Embarrassing.

So I did, and unwrapping my sandwich I'm interrupted by leg meeting wood, quickly taking a glance at what brought me back down to Earth from spacing out and find it's the seat opposite his and so I just sit with quickened heart rate and trembling hands,

maaaaan I better not make a fool out of myself

sheepish smile

I deserve to take a break too from it all

and raise my hand in greeting at him after setting the foil and food down on the table.

"Heyyy, I'm...Russell, it's nice to meet you."

I sure hope I don't screw this up.

you may not know where you're going.

When I got to work I always followed a routine. I'd get my axe. Get my gloves. Head out to the site - but then my eyes always collided with the ones of a male of ginger roots. Word of those around never told of his title, nor his name, but he and I shared some sort of greeting whenever we saw each other. We never spoke one word. Not once. It gives me shivers, how we always seem to lock eyes. One day I tried to not look for him but it felt to weird to not look for him. It was a normal every-day routine that we've done by this point. Our days didn't feel the same (or, at least mine didn't) when he wasn't there.

It's like going to dinner with one less person at the dinner table after a year. It's like not having that one certain breakfast you eat every day. Your day feels a bit off because of it. And, when you get the chance to have it back, you take it.

Today, at lunch, I expected to sit alone like I always do. I always take the picnic table and eat my sandwich as fast as I could, because there's obviously no way in hell anyone's going to make the effort to talk to me and I want to just get back to work because of that. What's the fun in taking your time to eat when nothing is there to take your time for?

Exactly.

Nothing at all.

So it surprised me to feel a shadow hovering over the table, and it surprised me even more that when I looked up it revealed those ginger roots and a sheepish smile to bring out his roots even more. His skin represented a light red - still pale, however, it almost looked like it received too much sun during work.

Hand up, they waved. They spoke, giving the name. Russell. It ran off of the tongue nice.

"Mitchell." I spoke in a voice that represented curiosity. Normally I'd be more closed to new people, especially ones I haven't spoken to before, but we have a special kind of bond making it easier. "Nice to meet you too."

Wow. I actually smiled?

but you know that so long as you spread your wings..

"Mitchell. Nice to meet you too."

There's a hint of questioning in his voice, as if he's now wondering why I'm here, why I've decided to start talking to him and why I made the choice to sit and have lunch with him; simultaneously though does he flash a sight I'm no stranger to by now, and would otherwise have not even cared about if it wasn't him who revealed it to me.

Instead, butterflies flap about frantically in the pit of my stomach, and my own sets of white broaden.

"Why are you getting so excited?"

their dark whispers suddenly chime in, trying with claws of suffering to drag me back down into my slow descent of despair, but I'm not in the mood to further put up with it, I'm not in the mood to make an effort and keep trying to resolve it and I'm not in the mood to keep attempting to searchfornothing so I swallow the youthful demons and look deeply into Mitchell's eyes to remind myself why I'm here.

"Do you always eat that fast?" I raise a brow and chuckle at the dark-haired guy, dropping my gaze for only a brief moment to take a bite of my sandwich before returning to him. "...and here, alone? Doesn't seem like fun."

Their groans of despondency reach me again at the dangerous word of isolation, but I try to drown them out with the flavor of lettuce and turkey, the sound of chewing.

Please,
I beg of them.
Not now, please.

I forgot that he was here.

Despite only speaking our greetings moments ago, my mind went back to the scheduled task of eating my lunch as fast as I can. I mean, I'm used to the idea. Shoving all the food in my mouth as fast as I can to just head off back to work. I'd rather work than sit alone - it was a kind of sad idea in my opinion, just sitting around and waiting for something to happen when you know nothing will happen anyways.

"Do you always eat that fast?"

Oh, right, he's here. Mitchell looked up to watch as he took another bite of his sandwich, soon returning to him. "...and here, alone? Doesn't seem like fun."

That made things sound worse than they intentionally were. "I- er," I stumbled over my words like a tumbleweed rolling over the desert floor; hopping across and flying all over the place. "I don't really eat with that many people because nobody really makes the effort to join me." It was like putting piece after piece together for a puzzle, slowly being able to reach the final picture. "And that's why I eat fast. I don't really like accepting the fact that I'm alone here, so I just eat as fast as I can so I can just hop right back into working."

It was a sad truth, but not all truths are supposed to be good.

He responds, the cool, gloomy air swirling towards the sky from his words sending to me flashes of dead eyes, melancholy faces, voices devoid of hope and a chill runs down my spine as I gulp down a few more pieces of my food.

The way he replied, his diction, it's almost like he confessed his feelings instead of just providing me a reason why he eats as fast as he does with no company. A preview into his mind, a door not fully closed; there's a crack you can peek through. I drop the attention on him to my lunch for a few moments as I gather my thoughts.

God, is it really worth it...?

Their voices chime a "no" in unison.

Should I really...?

I slowly look back up at him, a cloud of solemn tension having slowly built up between us. The groans in protest keep up in trying to drag me down to the dark depths of myself but as I keep thinking...

Fuck, I really don't know where I get my hope and persistence from.

I've made it this far, it's been really difficult but I haven't given up yet. Why stop now? I'll take this challenge.

Breathe them away.

"Alone here...?" I start, low and short laughter accompanying me. I fully eye him with a growing confidence now, dissipating the cloud. "Not anymore if I have something to say about that. I can start spending time with you--"

DICTION-- FUCK.

"--i-if you...if you want, I mean..." Nervous chuckle, I rub the back of my neck as my complexion blooms a bit.

"I know how it feels, anyhow."

You know how there's certain aspects about you that nobody seems to understand, and they feel the want to try and invade that aspect? Like loneliness or writing, or being the absolute best friend you could be. Small things or hobbies that you've done in your life and its' so difficult to actually get rid of those ideas? That's how isolation worked with me; I liked the idea of my own thoughts being my own,, and really, not listening to any of the ideas that other people had. I didn't like to get them tampered with by outside resources; because it's kind of like a cheese. When you leave it out for a certain amount of time, it begins to mold and smell.

That's how I typically felt about leaving your thoughts open to interpretation. People tend to dislike them and it grows old - like moldy cheese - but ten times faster.

"Alone here...?" The male started, his low voice that seemed to reach depths below hell. He let out a laugh - his laugh gleaming with a small hint of sprouting confidence. "Not anymore if I have something to say about that. I can start spending time with you--" His voice seemed to stumble over itself, like a small child after first learning to walk.

Oh. What's to happen now? He'll just show up and eat with me? That's unusual. I think it's kind of weird. "--i-if you...if you want, I mean..." A nervous chuckle was let out from him.

Well, somehow I doubt that idea.
