Muttation Contest XVIII

Name of Mutt: Oni

Brief Summary: A grass snake with spiky eyebrows. The Oni is in a variety of colors, as it camouflage's itself with it's surroundings. Used by the capitol to kill rebels with a neurotoxin that just literally kills the body from the inside. The Oni emits the toxin when it bites you. If you get near it, you better be prepared to die. The Oni likes to settle in grassy area's preferably, gardens, or orchards. The Oni has 2 razor-sharp fangs that can go 3 inches deep into your neck. The Oni can see in the dark, but is super loud, so you can here it stalking you, and you can try to run away before it pounces.

The Oni is hard to kill, but it's not immpossible. It's different from other snakes, because when you cut it's head off it stays dead, it doesn't writhe after you do. That is the way it is, because the GM's were unable to replicate the tissue of the snakes that lets the snakes be able to wriggle when the head is chopped off.

Name of Mutt: Wyverkoi
Brief Summary: The Wyverkoi, or 'Wyvern Koi', was initially developed by the Capitol as a form of entertainment. It was meant to perform tricks and be an extraordinary creature for attendees of a Capitol 'fair' event to witness. The giant, flying, fish-like creature with the wings of the mythical dragon got out of hand, however, and caused a lot of destruction. There were only two of these creatures originally created, and they were stowed away after the event to be used as mutts in the Hunger Games, due to their unintentionally dangerous nature. These creatures are very large and possess dragon wings, as well as four arms on their underside that end in clawed feet. These claws are extremely sharp, and are the Wyverkoi's means of defense. Generally, these creatures fly through the sky peacefully, but when craving a meal or if provoked, they will attack.

Name of Mutt: porcelion
Brief Summary: These hollow creatures were initially created as fearsome cargo carriers. Programmed to travel in packs, the porcelions seemed no different than a typical pride of lions, pardoning a few key differences: the most prominent being their larger size and the glass-like shimmer their fur created against the light. While they were given offensive weapons, they were mostly programmed for defense. After initial attacks (in which teeth and claws were prone to breaking off within victims,) the porcelions were virtually unable to defend themselves. After reaching their destination, captors needed only to answer the pride's riddle, and they were willingly given the treasures within.

For the sake of the games, porcelions could be a way for tributes to gain some necessary items. Perhaps the tributes have to fight until either a) the porcelions run out of hp, or b) one of them answers the riddle.

Name of Mutt: shelzams
Brief Summary: These creatures, roughly the size of a household cat and resembling snails with the legs of a caterpillar, were initially created for disposal of the remnants of crops in District Eleven. Their saliva held an extreme level of salt, almost enough that it was almost in it's purest state. Trails of it were left in their wake, and after realizing the slime trails ultimately salted the earth it touched, the shelzams were quickly recalled. One thing the scientists noted were the interesting eating habits of the creatures. While they did tend to focus on plant-based organic matter, they were also prone to attacking one another. It was believed that the shelzam was simply territorial at first, but upon further study, it was discovered that the shelzam didn't only attack each other, but any living creature standing between it and it's next delicious meal.

Poision, Edible, or Neither? neither, though salt can be harvested from them, and their shells could potentially be used as makeshift helmets.


Name of Mutt: hooyu
Brief Summary: While in its raw state, the hooyu appears as a man-sized owl. However, it is a very quick learner. It studies foes, learns their tendencies, and even has the ability to transform itself into a carbon copy of its prey, the only notable difference being the oversized owl eyes that always remain the same. Originally, it was created only to keep up appearances for as long as possible when certain Captiol officials had disappeared. However, no matter how they tried, scientists couldn't get the appearance of the eyes to change. Because of this, it was sent off to the combat station and weaponized, and is now ready at the drop of a hat to remind anyone who dares cross it that a person's worst nightmare truly is themself.

Name of Mutt: Balumbus
Brief Summary: The Capitol do enjoy their fun and the Balumbus very much reflects that. One eccentric mutt designer decided to enter a "balloon contest" for one of the many parades in the Capitol. So what did they decide to do? Blow up a variety of normal animals. Birds were too boring, lions too nasty but the elephant, the elephant very much took off. If only the mutated elephant didn't suffocate the creator with its trunk, they were really onto a winning design. But the design was not scrapped, the team of mutt creators adapted it for the use in the games. A Balumbus is the size of any average elephant, but it contains much more air and floats around in the sky. Its trunk still drags along the ground, swiping at prey and sometimes wrapping around their bodies, suffocating the life out of them. Unlike an elephant, a Balumbus is a carnivore and anything that contains meat is on its meal plan. The mutt creators thought it would be an exciting addition to the games mutt list.

Name of Mutt: Pugraffe

Brief Summary: Designed as an attraction for the Greater Capitol Zoo, the pugraffe is a feisty quadruped adored both for its playful nature and signature bark. Standing between seven and ten feet tall, this ungulate has a reduced height but still sports a long, girthy neck. Tributes should be wary that a pugraffe will use both its teeth and neck to defend itself from attack. Additionally, pugraffe do not often separate from one another, and tend to travel in pairs. However, unless provoked, one may allow tributes to rub underneath its ears for a good scratch.

Name of Mutt: Pugchilla

Brief Summary: Pugchillas seek out warm, dry areas to settle their nests. This rodent-canine hybrid is exceedingly gentle, and will ‘mark’ a human as its protector after being held in its arms. As such, pugchillas were a popular capitol pet for some time. Tributes may discover pugchilla as small game, but note that if carried, will then follow them throughout the arena. When provoked, pugchilla will use their sharp claws to protect themselves from danger. They serve especially well as pillows.

Name of Mutt: Orizuru (Senbazuru when in a swarm)
Brief Summary:

You can hear them before you can see them. The sound is a combination of a thousand fluttering wings and the thunder-like rumble of crumpling paper. It seems to start somewhere impossibly far away, nothing more than a wind in the distance, a storm over the horizon - but if you can hear it, it's already too late to run away.

Suddenly, you're caught in the middle of a turbulent windstorm. Your vision goes white - have you gone blind? Then the pain begins, the slashing of a million tiny abrasions all over your exposed skin. The white flurry begins to turn red, it's blood - it's your blood. Your hair whips around you in an insuppressible tornado. The rustling, roaring sound is almost as unbearable as the pain itself. You try to fight back - but how can you possibly kill something that appears to be made of nothing more than... paper?

The orizuru birds were created for the benefit of the Capitol's meteorologists, who could utilise their practical weightlessness for airborne weathervanes, and the crisp texture of their paper-like wings as indicators of moisture in the air. They were hypnotic to watch when they were released from the tops of cliffs or weather centres, and it was often hard to believe that they really were living creatures, and not just folded origami cranes swirling in the wind. But aside from the undeniable fact that they were flapping their wings and riding the air currents, look closely enough at their wings and you can see the thin capillaries that run through them; hold their thicker folded core up to the light, and you can almost track the vibrating heartbeats that cause a faint shadow to pulse there.

The fact that their behaviour is very similar to regular birds, but with more obedience, soon attracted the attention of swarm scientists, who would release large groups of them together to study their movements as a shoal. Naturally, however, as with many of the beautiful creatures created for research or educational purposes, thoughts turned to how such a swarm could be used for harm. The senbazuru - the name naturally given to the birds when they were kept in a swarm - were subjected to torture, and their aggression rose - they went from being as innocent and beautiful as a flock of starlings, to as deadly in the air as hailstones, or raining daggers. They would surround a person, diving in with their wings and beaks, the sharp clean edges of their paper-thin skeletons slashing across any flesh they could see. Like a flock of bats or insects, they could be impossible to escape from, and though a few papercuts might seem like nothing to worry about in the Arena, in large enough numbers they could do some real, severe damage.
