A C H I L L E S

I am a child of legend.

Legends never die; that is why I'm immortalized, a bronze statue standing tall above the waves and shores Eden and it's out there somewhere and it reads Fray. Compounds, rust -- it'll never corrode and fall victim to the elements, legends never die after all. I tell myself it's there, standing high and proud above the ashes of Eden; you can't corrode a legend after all.

I can sing, sleep, breathe with the knowledge that Fray is permanent, like the marks made upon the bark of a tree with the edge of a blade; carved upon knife's edge and etched deep into the trunk. I can drunkenly stumble and shift sharp objects across the desk, fumbling with my anxieties (fuck, shit, fuck, shit) but it'll always play in the back of my mind on loop -- Fray is bathed in pools of molten gold and and baptized with the blood of perceived divinity.

Adored by thousands, cursed by one -- I'll draw the four letters across the fogged window and be sound in the knowledge that it won't fade.

Achilles may as well be a simple myth.

And there's no bitter peak to my tongue when I say it, like telling the ending to a story cursed with defeat ('Scout's dead') or ending a journey with a blessing ('Justice has won') I state simple fact. I sit on the edge of glory looking in, watching Justice carve the beginning of a legend with his axe on my television screen and telling myself 'I wish I could be like that.' Subtract of course, the prosthetic leg and add the features traced across my skin by genetics. It's easy to tell myself I'm better looking than that guy, he's just another fuckboy with a fuckboy grin.

My dark brown hair cut to medium length, it tells the world that I wasn't even short of love or well money. Always keeping it the right length, always putting the right product, always washing it the right amount of times -- fuck no wonder people tell me that I'm too vain. I let the facial hair grow out too, from the clean face at seventeen to well whatever this is. I was never short of love or money, the manor and the expensive clothes on my back speak volumes I suppose. Dark brown and short along my jaw and my chin, well I'm not complaining. Dark brown eyes stare into the mirror and I just stop and stare; what the fuck's become of me?

Liquor, ichor, bottles -- I wasn't always this pale. I didn't always have these bags under my eyes from never letting my head so much as touch the pillow, because I would rather go out and party and spend the night in a stranger's house than sleep early so I can rise and shine early and go to career training even more than I already do. Hell, I'd rather go to a bar and get in a drunken fight then spent the evening at home with the family. I'm always in a constant state of teetering along the boundary of presence and absence, always there but not quite there. It usually takes a quick slap against my cheek and jaw and I'm stumbling, scrambling to look alive.

It's not an addiction but it's a pretty fucking hard habit to kick.

I'm supposed to be immortalized -legends never die after all- but I keep having my parents on my case about my performance in training taking an Icarus dive and plummeting because I'm just so damn tired. Some legend I am.

I let myself break just so they could rebuild me. Like putting back a broken boy from spare parts and prosthetic, except there wasn't a single severed limb or loose cog in sight. They made me lift weights, woke me up at one in the morning to do press-ups and made me drink protein shakes -- why am I breaking for the sake of others? I never dared ask the question out loud. It inflated my biceps, defined my torso, hardened my mind and built my confidence all from broken cogs and spare parts. I just never paid attention to my siblings, never cared because I was so focused on myself and what I was becoming. I've grown since then, 5'11 isn't too bad I suppose.

I suppose I should be a bit grateful I don't live with my aunt and uncle, whatever the fuck happened to make Scout Fray I'd rather keep as a mystery unsolved.

Some riddles and mysteries I pieced together after the answers were replayed in slow motion across my television screen.

(Why must I break for the sake of others?)

Yet for over eight years the question danced within the corners of my mind but never left the tip of my tongue. Why pieces of myself were scattered across the floor in the form of blood, sweat and tears I never knew but always questioned. The answer was only revealed to me when I saw my cousin carve a red ravine across his final opponent's back and escape from the heart of hell itself -- he made a legend. Erected a statue from bronze and baptized the name Fray in molten gold, only difference is that everyone will know Justice, even when his ashes are scattered within the sand of Eden.

I am a child of legend, immortality runs through my veins but he created the legend, and that is why he will never die.

"I can do that." I told myself, I told them. And yet since I've turned eighteen and labelled myself as a grown man, all I've done is stay out late with the neck of a bottle sewn in the palm of my hands and spent the night at a stranger's house on most days. I am a child of legend, yet the statue that is supposed to set the name Achilles from a common myth is being corroded from bottle of liquor and sleepless nights, I'm fucking losing it.

I have to put on that face, sew the confidence across my chest and smile whenever someone questions me -- "Pillar just got unlucky, besides, she's nowhere near as skilled as I am." It has to be said with a confidence smirk followed by a hand running through my hair. I can't let them see the vulnerabilities and the insecurities buried beneath this hollow chest of mine. I can't let it happen, not the constant self questioning (am I good enough), not the guilt (I should be training), I can't let them or I lose face. I can't lose face.

I can't be that child again, I need to be the man put together by broken cogs and spare parts.

A young child engrossed with naive fantasies, I never imagined Scout Fray could lose it. She volunteered and my parents grinned, telling me to have faith in her and that she'd bring a crown home despite letting death's finger bones dig into her wrists in an attempt to stifle her quickening pulse beneath her skin. I trusted them, watching how ruthless she was, the way she insulted everyone and carried herself like the solar system moved in cycles around her shoulders.

"Killed by filth from Four and Twelve."

Like stating a simple fact -- (There's no milk in the fridge. Scout's dead. You missed the target. Scout's dead.)

Pillar met a similar fate, falling inches from glory, and Diorite got devoured by a swarm of pet butterflies. It's a tongue twister trying to explain how we can go from Justice Fray -the father of a legend- to being killed by lower districts and pet butterflies. My peers in the training center stating simple fact like butter wouldn't melt, shaking their heads in mockery 'how disgraceful.'

They broke me down, rebuilding me from spare parts and broken gears. Fixing the broken boy so the man can rise from his ashes. So the man can evolve from being a simple child and stop gawking at the bronze statue marked by Fray and baptize the name Achilles in pools of molten gold.

Heft the spear on my right, take a swig from the bottle on my left and relish the poison on my tongue -- I am a man of legend.
