Old habits die hard - it's a saying that has defined you throughout your eighteen years of life.

As a child, your life was filled with cries of "Lana, no!" or "Lana, get out of there!" as even then, curiosity and a desire to learn manifested within your very being. You'd receive stern talking tos with each new excursion, maybe even a yelling session from time to time, and for a little while, you'd back off.

But eventually, curiosity won out over caution, the desire to learn would exceed the instinct of self-preservation, and the cycle would begin again.

As you grew older and school took away much of your time, you often found yourself the outcast in a group that consisted of the career Careers, the fishy fishermen and women, and those that somehow managed to straddle both worlds simultaneously.

There was no room for the intellectually oriented in a district where book smarts mattered little in the two major industries of the district. If you were in Six, that might be different, surely, but alas, you were a native of Four through and through.

But this created a problem of its own as you would find, for you possessed a mostly gregarious nature despite your fascination for books - to the point, almost, where the company of another soul was often more enjoyable that that of the inked pages of a novel. And see, back when you were a child, this now-obvious divide in the social structure wasn't nearly as evident as it was once you reached your teenage years. After all, kids didn't care about what activities you did or didn't do. Their definition of the word bias was a lot more nebulous, not quite as corporeal as it was once you reached your teenage years.

Oh, how you miss those days sometimes.

Not only were the dynamics of social interaction so much simpler - no cliques or superficial judging to get in the way of mutual enjoyment - but you were given freer reign with how much you were able to explore and learn, as well.

Granted, back then you also had the excuse of youth and naivety as well, two key components that simply weren't going to fly as single digits became double digits and your desire for the deepest and most obscure of knowledge grew.

Perhaps it was a combination of the two that ended up leading to the breaking point, for whether it was the fact that few wanted to interact with the bookworm or the fact that your parents were getting increasingly fed up with the fact that you were, in fact, a bookworm by choice and not option for the Career path (an obsession that, while cute as a kid, was apparently something you should have grown out of years ago), you found yourself at a sort of impasse.

And so, you did what anyone else with half a brain would have done in your situation. You adapted.

It wasn't hard to go from ignored recluse to carefully placed wallflower once your new goal had been set. And, as you would find, your new targets - secrets - were far more plentiful and easier to grasp at and utilize than the books that were becoming increasingly few and far between as time went on.

Besides, it was a lot easier to bend someone's will with a deep, dark secret than it ever had been with lines from a book.

That was how the majority of your mid to late teens unfolded, as you gradually learned the tricks and the trade of intrigue. You'd hover around the edges of social packs, disappear into the shadows of dimly lit parties, pay attention to each bit of gossip and banter uttered in the Career academys (you had relented and heeded your parents wishes in this field only, as much for your own good as for their peace of mind), storing each little tidbit of information away in the depths of your mind or the pages of a handy notebook.

More often than not, it would amount to naught. But the few times that you did manage to get ahold of something juicy - ahhh, now those were the moments you relished.

But you had made a classic rookie mistake - you grew cocky, came to think of yourself as unbeatable, and therein lay your downfall.

You'd always held a dislike for those that who rested in positions of power - whether it was the most skilled person in a Career class or the rich kid who used their parent's wealth to assert their own superiority in the social hierarchy. And it just so happened that you had gotten some pretty solid dirt on a boy who had fallen into the latter category - namely, in the form of learning about the illegitimate child he had fathered with a lower middle-class fishergirl.

In your hubris, you had attempted to extort and blackmail this boy for what he was worth. But those in power, you found, hated to be challenged or contradicted, and suddenly it was you who found themselves on the defensive, locked in a battle that you were doomed to lose.

After all, it was your word - one that, while truthful in many of its claims, held a tarnished reputation from past acts of deceit and manipulation, against that of a so-called golden boy who could do no wrong.

By this point, your parents, already stretched to the limits of their patience, had had enough. The latest incident had made a mockery of the Talbot name (not that it had ever been very prestigious to begin with), and the fact that you had never taken your Career training seriously nor shown interest in much of anything except knowledge didn't help your cause.

So, for your eighteenth birthday, they shipped you off to a local Peacekeeper academy in the hopes that training to be a member of the national police force would eventually straighten you out.

You haven't been there very long - less time than pretty much everyone else, actually - but like with the last trial, you've adapted. After all, secrets are not exclusive to the lawless, and it is refreshing in a sense to find a place where your reserves of knowledge may actually one day come in handy.

You might be on the bottom of the hierarchy now - being the newbie will do that to you - but you've already got your sights set on the top. Her name is Calypso Leto, and from what you can tell, she's just like anyone else who has gotten used to the power that they possess - large ego, sense of invincibility and superiority - but that does little to deter you from the inevitable collision course that you have set yourself upon.

You find it ironic, in a sense. Your parents sent you to the academy as a punishment - and while there is no doubt that the work load of your new life is much greater than that of your old one, the opportunities laid out before you are just as enticing as they used to be, if not more so.

A powerful girl on top to personally knock off. Rumors and secrets in abundant supply. And above all, a purpose - even if you never end up joining the Peacekeeping corps yourself, you at least have a motive to compete other than pure survival.

Right now, you might be on the bottom. But you sure as hell do not intend to stay there for very long.

And by the time you've worked your way up to the top, no one - not Calypso, not anyone - will know what hit them.
