It is dangerous to imagine yourself a hero.
The words fly out of your mouth - Hey! What do you think you're doing?! - and for a moment the girl pauses, turns around as a woman appears from the other corner. You expect her to run, to leave the scene before either you or the woman can identify her to the Peacekeepers.
When the glint of a knife appears in her hands, you realize that you have made a grave miscalculation.
You have no idea why you do not try to run. Why you stand riveted to the ground as the knife enters the woman and the sidewalk runs red with her blood. Why your body feels heavy and stiff as she walks over with her dripping knife and you are utterly convinced she will kill you too.
She is an unpredictable input, and that is what makes her dangerous. Your brain strains from attempting to judge what she will do next, and like a piece of overheating machinery, it screeches to a halt.
At work, you are the one tasked with restarting such machines. But there is no one around to rescue you.
You never imagined a girl tinier than you holding you hostage at knifepoint while she ties a blindfold around your face. You never imagined being dragged through the district until you have lost all sense of distance and direction. You never imagined standing so helpless in the face of danger.
