“Caesi! Come in!” My mother called out to me from the comfort of our home. We didn’t have much, but it was enough. My family (The Stronts) have always been strong, well, since the explosion took the life of my father when I was eight. By that time, there were four other mouths to feed in the house, but not enough work to go on. My mother worked in the laboratories, but usually, she was brushed aside.

However, to me, she was strong, fearless, and selfless. She gave up what she could to make sure that her children didn’t go hungry. She helped us when she could, and made us promise that we would look out for each other as well. Even in these dark times, she wanted to show us how important it was to keep the idea of family alive.

My mother would tell me about her job from time to time. She was researching some sort of serum that could possibly cure some of the toughest diseases known to man. I thought about how much I wanted to be like my mother. She cared about others more than she cared about herself, and she was fine dedicating her life to her research because she knew that would be her legacy. That was the passion I aspired to acquire.

However, I could never do that. I just wasn’t made up of the correct chemical compounds.

District six, known as the science district. Sometimes I loathed it. I never felt adequate for the people that lived here. When it came to school, I just wasn’t smart enough, and when it came to medicine, I wasn’t detailed enough. I was either too hasty, or too forgetful. When it came to science, you had to be on the dot, or, kablamoo. Well, I guess that is what happened to my father.

She told me that I was a lot like my father. Someone who was kind, and thought about others. Someone who could get by on basic materials, but struggled with the more complex stuff. Someone who was willing to sacrifice for what they believed in. My father was a scientist who wanted to come up with something that could prolong life. He spent hours conjuring forums and theorems trying to come up with the essence of life. I don't remember seeing father too much at home when I was younger, and my mom told me that was because he put his science before his family. It cost him his life, and ripped a hole in a family that barely survived the shrapnel blast.

Me? Caesi Stront? I was the pretty one. The one that all the boys crushed on secretly, but would never come up too. I couldn’t be approached because of my protective older brother. He was one year older than I, and he protected all of us. However, he couldn’t protect us always, seeing as we were all age eligible for the games, minus Rubi. That didn’t matter to Lithe though. He told me that he was going to protect us no matter what, and I relished in that thought, knowing that if I was reaped, there would be no way for him to get to me. As much as I wanted to believe him.

I don't have many friends here in six. I don't count my siblings as my friends either. Most of the time I am looked down upon because my looks are striking. However, I also am smart enough to get by. It's odd, because I feel some of the prettiest people come from six. They seem to have exotic faces that you can't find in the rest of Panem, and most of the time, you can tell when you have a tribute from six. I hope I won't be like that. The girl from six with a pretty face. I felt like I was so much more than that.

While I wasn’t the smartest, I was still smart. Smart enough to know how to find shelter when something did go boom in six. Resourceful enough to get by on meager means. When my mother would choose to go without food, I would find a way to get her something. Anything to get her by. Sometimes I wished she would remarry, but who could find love in a time like this? I didn’t want to. Franc on the other hand couldn’t help but think about love. He would call me blind, and I would call him hopeless. We would laugh about it till we fell asleep.

One thing that I did excel at was speed. In obstacle courses that the district would run from time to time, I would always place high. Franc and Lithe weren’t that far behind me, but I always edged them out. They said it was because I didn’t have a lot of upper body resistance. I asked them what they meant, and they just stared at my chest. I slapped both across the face for insulting me, and then hugged them again, knowing that they were paying me a compliment.

However, the real obstacle was going to be the games. Ive avoided them so far, but I knew better. I knew what would happened if I were to be reaped. My family would lament over and over. They would pray to whatever god they could that would bring me home. They would watch, not because they got entertainment out of it, but because that would be the only way they knew I was safe. They would struggle to send me sponsorship items, and they might even starve to make sure I was taken care of. They were idiots to think that I would survive long.

All I could do now was roll my messy blonde hair into the sloppiest bun possible and hold it up with a stick. My mother showed me that trick when I was young. I haven’t had a hair tie since. I had a long way to go to prove that I would be useful in six. Whether that be in a laboratory or somewhere else, I will find the place where I belong.

I have too.
