PRESIDENT SNOW
President Snow checked the petals of the white roses adorning the dining room first. He pressed the edges, peered into the center, tried to snap off a thorn. They had good integrity, this batch. He looked up with a sigh when the doors open, admitting his visitor. Gamemaker Kinkade slunk into the room, looking every bit the train wreck his spies had described. His shoulders sagged. His skin looked sallow. He caught the President’s assessing him and slowly, painfully, bent into a bow.
“You wanted to see me?”
President Snow plunged his hand into the earth of the flower pot, letting the soil crumble between his fingers. “Surely you do not think the preparation for the 80th Quell has gone well, do you?”
Glamour gulped. “If I just had a little more time, sir -”
“You want me to delay the start the Games? The tributes are on their way to the Capitol as we speak, and you want to - what? String together a narrative about their time together in the Training Center?”
“It’s a thought…”
Snow lifted his hand, satisfied the damp earth was keeping his roses alive, which was more than he could say for the man in front of him. “Perhaps we shouldn’t even call it a Quell at all.”
Glamour went very, very still.
“But then I so hate to disappoint my citizens.” He clapped his hands together, sending up a flume of dust. “So onward it must be. Due to your repeated and continued failings, I’ve decided to bring on another Gamemaker to make the best of the circumstances. He’s proven himself in the past, and if anything, should be a far more popular choice with those here in the Capitol.”
He nodded towards an avox, who opened a hidden door in the wall. “Mr. Kinkade, I believe you know Vepar Azrael?”
