APPEARANCE

On the morning of her twelfth birthday, D'Arcy Mason was happy. She had woken up bright and early, not wanting to miss a single moment of this day devoted entirely to her, and began to get dressed. She planned on wearing her favourite skirt, the same shade of baby blue as her wide eyes, pleated and proper. She paired it with a simple white blouse, and stepped in front of the gilded old mirror above the worn wooden dresser. With practised hands, she pushed her pale blonde hair away from her face and secured the long, straight locks with a rich blue ribbon.

Ready to start her day, she took one last look at herself in the reflection, looking to see any visible sign that she was now older, more mature than she was as an eleven-year-old. The light dusting of freckles was still there, spattered across her small, upturned nose. She still had the same thin lips framing a snaggletoothed mouth. She satisfied herself with the thought that maybe her heart-shaped face had lost a bit of it's childhood roundness. Yes, she was sure she saw thinner cheeks.

Aside from a possible slight change in face roundness, D'Arcy didn't see any differences in herself that suggested she had grown any older. She was still very petite, only 4 feet and 8 inches tall and weighing just under 85 pounds. She was one of the tiniest people in her class, and tinier still than many students younger than her. Disappointed, she gave up on the search for marks of her age and made her way out of the bedroom she shared with her sisters. Even though the wooden floor was aged and warped from years of tread, D'Arcy's delicate footsteps made barely a sound. Her soft-footed steps often helped her sneak around places without anyone noticing, a skill she took advantage of whenever she would play hide-and-seek with her sisters and friends.

PERSONALITY

D'Arcy's mother always said she never walked anywhere, she always fluttered. She never liked to be sitting still, always flitting around to see what was going on everywhere around her. It was this behaviour paired with her silent steps that led to her parents calling her their "little butterfly." She liked the analogy, and as she fluttered down the hallway in a flash of blue, she imagined she was one of the tiny blue butterflies she loved so much. She could sit outside for ages, watching the soft wings lazily float over the wildflowers that grew not far from her front door.

What drew her to the butterflies most was their colour. Not a deep blue, but a soft one, not unlike the sky on a clear summer day. D'Arcy had a real eye for colour; she appreciated the reds and oranges of a sunset, the deep greens in the grass after a summer storm, the ever-changing greys and whites of the clouds so far above. None of these colours she liked more than this gentle blue. It was a colour than comforted her, that made her feel calm and safe. Just like she knew she would see her wonderful blue sky after the chaos and distress of a storm, she knew that she would be able to get through anything thrown at her.

D'Arcy entered the kitchen to find her family already there, giant smiles on their faces, breakfast made, ready to shower her with their birthday wishes. Normally she would have helped prepare the breakfast for the family, but with her parents free to celebrate this morning, she got to relax. D'Arcy was used to taking over some of the household roles, taking care of her two younger sisters when her parents are too busy. She didn't mind, as it made her feel grown up and taught her responsibility, but she had to admit it was nice to have the day off.

HISTORY

D'Arcy sat down at the head of the table and looked out at the smiling faces of her family. There was no mistaking that they were all related; everyone had the same pale blond hair, the same wide blue eyes. She and her two younger sisters looked so much alike they were occasionally mistaken for twins. Her parents were starting to show signs of their age, her mother's face was lined with the start of wrinkles around her eyes and mouth, and her father sported a growing bald spot on the crown of his head. Both of them were brilliant physicists, working on solutions to improve the high-speed trains of the capitol. D'Arcy was fortunate to inherit the smarts of her parents; she excelled at school and hoped one day to follow in the footsteps of her parents. Unfortunately, the nature of their work often meant the time she got to spend with her parents became pretty limited, and left it up to her to look after her sisters.

Cecily was the older of the two sisters, and at ten years old she was starting to become more self-reliant. She and D'Arcy were identical, except for Cecily's lack of freckles and her preference to keep her hair in a braid down her back. Cecily was always more boisterous and confident than the others. If she didn't like something, she wasn't shy to speak her mind on it. Since this can be dangerous if directed towards the Peacekeepers that patrol the streets, or towards the Capitol itself, D'Arcy and her parents have had to take precaution to try and teach her to hold her thoughts to herself when the situation calls for it. She finally learned to be less careless after an incident when she was 8, where her family got a very scary warning after she told a Peacekeeper he walked funny.

The youngest sister, Evvie, was 7 years old. She looked remarkably like the others, albeit younger and with more of a button nose. She kept her hair in pigtails that flopped around on either side of her whenever she walked. Evvie hated to see anything hurt, whether it be another person or an animal. She was quick to cry when someone or something was hurt. Sometimes even thinking about someone else in pain could be enough to get her to tear up. This meant that the Hunger Games were a struggle, and whenever they had to watch it was up to D'Arcy and Cecily to comfort her and try to distract her from whatever tragedy was unfolding in front of them.

Seeing her family gathered to celebrate her birthday filled D'Arcy with so much happiness, she thought nothing could ruin her mood. But while her younger sisters exuded pure joy, she could sense something else in the eyes of her parents, masked by the big smiles on their faces. It looked like... sadness? Fear? At first D'Arcy couldn't understand what would cause them to look at her with this hidden sadness. But when the day's events were done and she was ready to crawl into bed, she realized: she was twelve years old. She was now eligible to be reaped for the Hunger Games.

Suddenly she didn't want to be twelve anymore.
