The victory tour was one of the worst parts of the games. Katelyn hated it, the way each new victor was paraded around Panem for people to gawk at. The Capitol collected souls like trophies and honestly, she didn’t think the average citizen really understood what it was like, being a victor.Being a celebrity because you killed a couple other teenagers to stay alive. The only one that hadn’t was Annie, but that brought with it a whole new set of issues.
She walked with Nico off the stage, glad that the speech portion was done. He seemed glum, in her opinion; the type of victor to hold his pain tight in his chest and bottle it up. Probably still thinking about Francisco. One thing she was grateful for was that she hadn’t developed feelings for any of her allies. It would have made moving on more difficult.
Above everything else, she couldn’t help but feel the similarities. A boy from the lowest district facing off against a girl from seven. A girl that had fighting spirit she knew all too well.
It mirrored Stella Blakesley’s finale.
It mirrored her own.
Enjoy your time living in a world of dead men walking.
Twelve years and she still hadn’t outrun those words. There really were dead men walking, if some of the theories about the last quells tributes were to be believed. But she knew they were as real as every forlorn victor still trying to find their place in the world. The Capitol might remove scars, give people prosthetics. But they couldn’t take memories. The dreams.
They’d never take the twenty-three names she’d tattooed on her arms and neck. Her fellow tributes, be they ally or enemy, victim or villain. They were as much a part of her as the faded red bandana she still wore on her head.
Katelyn’s eyes found Nico’s and again wondered when eighteen had begun to feel so young. Hadn’t she just been nineteen herself, in shock that Kirito had come back to her? Hadn’t Navya just announced her pregnancy? Hadn’t Opal just comforted her about the dating show? Hadn’t Arbor—
Katelyn set her jaw. It was no good living in the past.
“I know the tour can be overwhelming,” she began as they walked towards the Justice Building. Lot of places, lot of people in a short amount of time.” She found herself unsure of what to say really, the last victor she’d done this for was Justice and with Opal’s help too he had adjusted fairly quickly.
While Katelyn was terrified at the thought of having children; (It was inconceivable, considering how many members of her new family had been reaped, considering what they had done to Eden Turner), she couldn’t help but feel like the yearly tributes were her children being sent off to die.
And she had started to feel the same way about the younger victors as well. Like they needed that helping hand that she’d been denied until Arbor came along. “I don’t know Stella or Heron all that well, but Arbor and Ara are good people. You’ll have plenty of help mentoring next year’s pair.” Did he need the time to breathe? To not think about the life he was headed for?
Probably. But he’d be alright as long as he didn’t make the same mistake that she had. “It gets easier,” she added quietly. “All of it. As long as you have people to lean on.”
