It was delightfully whimsical to be born to a big family of psychics in a district that worshipped logic and the methodical. Safe to say, Delphi never fit in. She was the odd, frayed card in a new deck; she was a machine whose secrets and witness marks could never be learnt.

She was Delphi Fox, the fire-caster, priestess of the fire-flies, the oracle of fifth avenue, to the general public. Her mother told her, in her countless bedtime stories, that Delphi was born in a room awash by candlelight, under a full moon, amongst cicada songs. Her first, primal cry stirred a nest of fire-flies near the house and all of them rushed into the room to hover around her, dancing, the room filled with celebratory buzzes of insect-wings and flashes of ghost-light. She was a child of the night—her face a burst of dark freckles that mimicked constellations and a child of the fire—her thick wisps of hair auburn and flame-red like an eternal pyre.

Delphi loved to picture the fire-flies near the house as lost faeries who couldn’t find their ways back home, forced to occupy hollow insect shells for shelter and living. They were a timid bunch, hiding whenever others sought for them, but more often than not, several of them would fly up to Delphi’s window and dance about her room. The mason jars lining her window were food for them, brimmed with dried summer grass and fresh flowers.

She’d always believed in impossible things because she was an impossible thing herself.

To Delphi, the world was incessantly deafening in a way she couldn’t articulate. Things hummed and tables pulsated; homes and houses and gardens ushered her in or forced her out. Her presence was a torch and those who craved warmth revered her whereas those scared of it kept their distances.. Delphi never went to school, or enrolled into the prestigious, demanding classes that many places in Six offered, because she knew logic and people like her didn’t go hand to hand. Science couldn’t explain the noises she could hear—or the precision of the tarot cards her family read,

the untold truth etched onto the words and the drawings that waited to be learnt and spoken.

Being an impossible thing, however, wasn’t easy because like all impossible things, she was feared and misunderstood. Delphi’s friends were her family because other children refused to spend time with someone who smelled of wormwood and held sticks in her hands, using them as a sort of antennae to track even more impossible things. She was, in their eyes, a girl with a fraudulent act and parlor tricks, all smokes and mirrors, an enigma too puzzling that it was easier to ridicule her rather than befriend her.

Even though she’d always thought of herself as mystic and arcane, Delphi was quite normal too. She chewed the ends of her sweaters too long and sat on the floor of her room countless times, gazing at countless sunsets. She tried on sun-hats after sun-hats in the dirty mirror before she went to pick up her brother from the nursery. She loved chia seeds and spicy foods, alongside chopped parsley and beef stew. The Foxes were mundane individuals, if you overlook and disregard the psychic business they operated. They were loud and jovial, the walls of their house soaked with enough laughter to last a year of melancholy. But, they were also cunning and clever, all sly foxes with their tails tucked between their legs, high brows and auburn hair that burned and burned. They lived with their own truths and beliefs, unapologetically.

In Delphi’s life, there were three significant things. First, was her family, especially her mother, whose eyes were warm and whose hands could shuffle her worn tarot cards so brilliantly that others saw it as a separate talent of her.

She had tried to teach Delphi the same tricks and sleight of hand but she always insisted that her cards needed to be in a slight disarray, never neatly packed, caught in a state of wild freedom.

Second, was her tarot cards. They were a gift from her late grandmother, a fellow psychic. The cards, at first glance, would appear worn, with their once-bright colors bleached to a dull sepia and their intricate wordings blurred, but in her hands, whenever she held them, they forever felt new and immortal. Tarot cards were a reader’s sword, a reader’s book and pen, a reader’s instruction manual. Each deck throbbed and quivered with the world’s untold truths and secrets, and deciphering and prying these truths out gave the most joy to Delphi. The process itself was, most of the time, intimate—secluded to the reader and the listener.

The third thing of significance, was fire.

Fire included candlelight, fire included the blaze of stars, and fire included a warm hearth that crackled and laughed on cold winter nights.

The Fox family, especially its women, were drawn to fire like moths were, she’d heard; some even started fires in order to sleep in them. Fire, to Delphi, meant cleansing and burning to a new self, and in pyres and candles, she saw figurines, each one as unfathomable as the next. Perhaps they were mere shadows, bordering the flames, or perhaps they were fragments of Delphi’s or others’ futures, showing themselves to her.

Perhaps she truly had magic in her veins, or perhaps she was a fraud, a mere parlor trick as others claimed all the Foxes were.

But, one thing was for certain:

She was Delphi Fox, an unfathomable girl who was in love with fire and believed in impossible things enough to be an impossible thing herself.
