Flight of the Frost Nakoms [Day 2 DG2tS vs Frost Nakom]

Kit had found a safe place to stow himself the night before, a thin place between crates that would give him a good view of the stairs but also somewhere to put his back against the wall so that no one could sneak up on him. With safety found, he'd scrolled through the names on his watch again, looking for his district partner. He found her name but then when he'd tried to click it, he couldn't. It was as if the watch was broken. He'd then looked for Jacob in it but couldn't find him and the strange watch's rules continued to confuse him.

Giving up on messaging Jacob, Kit moved on to Ike.

Kit: Ike! Finally, a way for us to communicate. (= Are you alright?
Ike: Kit! A wayyyyyy better way for us to communicate! I'm good. Not injured at all. Alone for the most part.
Ike: Are you alright?
Kit: I’m glad you’re safe, I couldn’t keep track of everything in the Bloodbath…
Kit: I’m ok! Got a few bad bruises but I’ll be ok! I’m so happy you’re okay
Ike: I'm glad you're safe too! Bruises will heal, death won't... Bloodbath was a lot....
Kit: Yeah… I couldn’t keep up with a lot and I’m worried, I think I saw Roisin go down. Her name isn’t clickable either, I tried.
Ike: I left bloodbath after Blue and Blair both went down. We can't talk to the dead... You're not alone, are you?
Kit: Damn… I didn’t want to believe it. It all feels so unreal…. Nah, I’ve got Jacob. He got hurt pretty bad though. Still found a way to make me laugh :slightly_smiling_face:
Kit: Don’t stay alone for long Ike, I don’t want you getting ganged up on. )):
Ike: Jacob :heart_eyes: I'm glad he's with someone like you! You'll look out for one another.
Ike: I'll be alone for now, we'll see what happens the next day or so. I won't get ganged up on :heart: I'm sure I can handle some people on my own!
Kit: Yeah, I know you’re tough. I’m just going to worry anyway. I know we shouldn’t get attached to each other and all but you matter a lot to me Ike.
Kit: Stay safe ok? I want to see you again.
Ike: I'll stay as safe as I can. It's better to have friends in the arena than to not have any in the arena. I'll be worrying about Jacob and you too.
Ike: Keep each other safe? I want to see you both again.
Kit: It’s a deal ((: I’m glad you’re still alive Ike. Talk to you soon, ok?
Ike: I'm glad you're still alive too! Yeah, we'll talk soon!

Kit set his stylus down, a strangeness filling him. The silence roared past him and he pushed his knees into his chest. Roisin was probably dead then. He didn't know what to feel, she was supposed to be a piece of home and now she was gone. Kit knew he wasn't alone, that he had Jacob and maybe Ike too, but that was different. He didn't know how to describe Six to half-strangers.

In the months since his accident, Kit hadn't known how to deal with his grief. He'd not only lost his hearing that day but his best friend, a person he'd loved dearly. It'd been his fault too, the explosion. He'd insisted on pushing the machine further than it could go. It'd been his choice. The pain of that knowledge, of the migraines, of the missing place where his friend should be had haunted him since but crying hadn't been easy. Kit only felt this strange emptiness, a hole where his base reactions should be.

It scared him, made him wonder if he was even a real person or just some sort of fathomless monster.

He waited in silence for Jacob to come back, playing idly with the scraps of items that he'd found in the bins. An idea for what to do with them finally came to him and he busied himself with an activity, a gentle smile coming back to him as he worked. It was easy to focus on anything but the emptiness inside him, he just needed a prompt to do so and he'd found one. By the time Jacob was back, Kit was cheerful again, happy with his handiwork.

The concept of night came with the anthem, startling Kit when faces appeared seemingly in the air above his watch, and Kit's hunch was confirmed. Roisin was dead. He stared at the image of her face until it disappeared and then looked away, the anthem ceasing to exist for him the moment he couldn't see it. Smoke hit his nose and then a gentle, warm rain soon followed. It smelled of chemicals and Kit vaguely wondered if it was dangerous but it didn't cause him pain and he was likely to die before he experienced any adverse effects.

So he put his head back and shut his eyes.

The thing about not hearing anything anymore was that suddenly Kit felt more in a moment than he ever had before. There was silence and then there was the rain, slightly warm hitting his skin. He could imagine the pitter-patter of it hitting the floor vaguely, the concept of rain such a long-ago memory now. Kit opened his mouth to catch the water and it tasted like a funeral dirge.

He offered to take first watch, fussing a little bit over Jacob. The other boy had gotten it much worse in the bloodbath and he needed his rest. He sat with his back against the wall right beside the other boy and watched silently, gun in his lap. Another party passed them at one point but Kit stayed silent and they went unnoticed in their place behind some crates.

When they switched in the earliest hours of the morning, Kit shut his eyes and laid down against the metal wall and dreamt of Paris' chest rising and falling beneath him instead of the cold metal floor.

In the morning, he feels Jacob's hand on his shoulder shaking him awake gently and Kit lets a soft sound of complaint out. He's still so tired and the warmth of his sleep has spread through him, lending to his lethargy. "Five more minutes," he says with a soft sigh, fingers tugging at Jacob's shirt in silent pleas. But Kit always wants just five more minutes and Jacob drags him up eventually.

The lights above their hard spark purple and water drips from above too. .-We should try to find a dry place-. Kit signs quickly and Jacob agrees with him. They walk quietly, Jacob behind him to hear danger and Kit in front to see it. If Kit stairs straight ahead, he feels alone and so he glances back every now and then to look at Jacob as if to reassure himself that the other boy is still there.

Eventually, they come to a wall of lockers, each one labelled with their names. Kit grimaces when he sees Roisin's name beside his, the knowledge of her death slipping under his skin again, an icy hand on his heart. When he opens the locker with his watch, he's greeted by a space suit. It has to be dryer than the tribute uniform he slept in, perhaps even heated and so he slips it on, waiting for Jacob to finish with his before turning towards the door.

He thought that he could handle it, the silence, and at home he always did but his house was familiar, the streets around it too. He knew what sounds he was missing, what to expect around each corner. Here he's tense, not only because of the other kids in the arena wanting to kill him but because there was a surprise around every single corner and he couldn't hear it coming. Still, he presses his watch against the keypad and watches the door slide open to reveal bright light. The sun.

Kit hurried out into the natural light without thinking, so happy to see the sky above them and seconds later, one hundred percent less happy to see the path that lay before them. He turned, hand on Jacob's arm. They'd never make it over the bridge with Jacob's bad leg and Kit unable to hear when things were getting shaky. But the door was shut to them, there was no going back no matter how many times Kit desperately pushed his watch against the dark keypad.

.-Fuck Jacob-. he signed in a panic, .-I'm sorry, I fucked up.-

But there's no time for apologies, a large icicle land between them, fallen from the jagged roof of the odd thing they've just come out of. A scream rips from Kit's throat and he claps a hand over his mouth, not able to discern just how loud that was. The icicle is long and sharp but still intact somehow. Kit reaches out and pulls it out of the snow, hefting it gently. "At least this could be useful?" he says with a laugh, trying to keep things light despite the hopelessness of the perilous route before them, "You could use it as a walking stick."

But before Kit can even turn to look at the bridge again, a spark of something beautiful and deadly comes between them again, and Kit steps back in confusion. "A giant bat made of crystal?" he yells, volume control out the window. It cuts into Jacob easily, drawing a thick dark line along his upper arm and Kit panics, swinging the icicle at it without thought.
