The house is a thing of ruin, and the four bots are running low on metaphorical steam. There is a flaw in their systems somewhere, an error in the programming or a faulty series of batteries that leaves them sluggish. Their pre-programmed messages have been long destroyed by now, but their urge to clean, to thrive, to fix the world around them?

That will remain until their batteries die, surely. But there is little they can do for the home they ransacked. Sometimes sweeping things under the rug will make a situation look better, but when dying robots are in charge of the same house and the same walls day after day after day, the mess piles up. The window blinds aren’t repaired just because they pull them up and out of the way. The mess doesn’t go away just because it’s piled in the closet with the shadows. The dining room table isn’t fixed just because there’s a pile of books keeping its uneven legs steady.

They have a desperate drive to fix things; the only problem is their energy levels. When they hear a noise, a disturbance in their broken home, they orient themselves toward it, but do not move. Such is the startle response of something that’s reserved its battery power for tomorrow, not today.

“Beep?”

“Meep?”

“Zeep?”

“Jeep?”

They whir in the closest approximation to robot confusion, and their operating systems only detect one thing.

Brokenness.

The figures do not register as people, but as something to fix.

There’s an error here that must be set right. An error in them all, robot and human alike.

With what energy they have, they set to work.

All too easily, Dio loses track of the hours.

He and Kass hole up in what seems to be some kind of main control room for the area overnight, and he watches the blue haze of the hologram map with tired eyes for longer than he can make sense of. It doesn't helped the pain in his leg, nor his collarbone or wrist, but staring mindlessly at the coiled arena has at least given him some knowledge. They hadn't yet run into other tributes, but with the circular nature of the ship, they would soon.

With a steady hand, Dio draws the lines of the arena onto the screen of his watch, marking down what seemed to be access points between major areas, if any sectors seemed likely to hold supplies they may need. His mother had taught him to be thorough. It is time to put his training to use.

He doesn't send the map to Kass.

When the beeping at his wrist strikes twelve and comes to life, he looks away. Blair deserves more than to be reduced to a hollow, crackling hologram. He'd remember her full of life instead.

In the morning, what he assumes to be morning, when their pair shuffles off down the hallway to what had looked to be a residential area on the map, Dio secures his stupid hat and swirls the folds of his red lace veil around his head to clear his vision. Kass has ripped half of her layers off already, and really, he can't blame her. His own outfit is all sweeping layers of fine silk and delicate woven lace and a rush of beautiful patched velvet as a cape that billows all around him with every move when he's right-side up, but he cannot bring himself to remove any of it. As the Games roll on, none of them can know what will come in handy when the time comes.

It doesn't stop him from feeling a little ridiculous when they climb to the ceiling and his layers fall all around him and try to crowd his face. It also doesn't stop him from feeling a little other-worldly, but he supposes that's the point to begin with.

They're not in Panem anymore, not really.

The halls aren't as cold, the farther that they move from the control room, and Dio wonders if he should have looked closer at the crack in the main screen at the front of that room. Maybe they could have found a different way out.

Or maybe they could have died.

A toss up.

They were right about it being a living area, at least. Looking down and sideways towards the ceiling- floor? everything feels wrong and turned on its head-, Dio cannot help the pang of loss as he takes in the dunes of stuff that have piled up. He knows it's all for show, knows that it's all fabricated, but his clothes are too worn and cared for to have never been owned, and he can bet the stuffed animals and toys and photographs and books down below had been shown the same level of care once.

It's a graveyard of everything in life that matters.

His stomach clenches at the thought.

Their feet make quick work of the residential cliff-side, traveling up and over closed off balconies and between fluttering clothes still strung up. There's noise from down the way, and Dio looks over at Kass quickly with his eyebrows raised before hopping down onto the nearest balcony and ducking into the nearest doorway, away from whatever might be living down the end of the hall.

Only to find something else... living inside the partially lit room. It's a round machine that rolls a little as they enter the space as if to look at them, and Dio just catches the sight of a sticker as it rolls to the side that says 'HELLO MY NAME IS EMILY' in big, bold lettering. He lifts an eyebrow and his arm to keep Kass back, wary of the way it moves and beeps as he takes a step sideways towards what looks to be a kitchenette area.

Buzz buzz.

Eyes flitting down to his watch, Dio blinks quickly at the new messages from Ike, his heart stuttering quickly behind his ribs as the words sink in.

Ike: Robots are friends! Emily says hi. Also @harper are you following me???
Ike: I got robot friends, they got butterfly friends, everything is good!

"Shit, Kass, we've got-

To word company never leaves his lips as something hard and metallic catches him in the collar and sends him stumbling back behind the counter he had been standing next to, moving too quick to catch what Kass does as another bot jumps into the fray. Ike's new friend, however, doesn't move on them. Back pressed against the counter, Dio types a quick message with a shaky hand.

Dio: can you maybe stop texting and fucking help NAKED NINJA.

Another noise sounds beyond his counter cover, but it doesn't mask the telltale buzz buzz at his wrist.

Ike: I drew a picture instead @dio

With a growl that is eaten up by mechanical sound, Dio smacks his head backwards, the thump clearing his mind a little of the sudden panic that had overtaken him. Panic. His mother would skewer him alive for that should he ever see her again. When he pokes his head out from behind his cover, it's just in time to see Emily roll quickly across the room, swerving in front of a figure- Ike, fucking finally- and take a hit that crunches deep into the carapace of her body. Dio narrows his eyes at the scene, disbelief and amusement warring for dominance after he's just witnessed robot martyrdom.

Canonize the poor bastard.

Clenching his hand tighter against his fire extinguisher, Dio ducks around the other side of the counter to get closer to Emily's broken shell and Ike. It only takes a moment for things to settle, just a little, but it gives him all the opening he needs to launch himself at the bot that had ended Emily's rolling.

Dio spends most of the night staring into the soft blue light of his tribute watch. Kass wishes she could remove the metal from her wrist but there is no clasp or latch to pry it off. It’s formed to her arm and will only be taken off when she leaves this arena.

The metal vibrates against the bone in her wrist and she looks up to see the Panem seal melt into Blair Havoc’s face. Her chest twists as she remembers her empty eyes, blood seeping out into the air. Unnatural. Unearthly. She should have done a reading, maybe then she could have known what was waiting for Blair. Instead she left her to the fates and now she was gone. Gone before she could be known.

Kass twists against the hard metal shelf, her purple robes wrapped tightly around her. She looked down to Dio on the floor. He was a fool but he was all she had right now.

Hours later Kass wakes up in a fog. Her head is sore from laying on metal with nothing but her own curls as a pillow. The dim lights of the room haven’t changed since they went to sleep and there is no way of knowing what time it was. Kass has always been fonder of the moon than the sun, but right now she’d give anything to see it affixed above her. She relied so much on nature and now she was free floating in a metal castle.

Kass presses her wrist against the keypad and the door slides open. Inside the world has been turned upside down. Like a child’s toy, the room has been shaken around. Objects litter the glass floor. It’s not debris from control panels or weapons or food, but worthless items. Blankets with worn edges, shirts with stains, stuffed rabbits, and pictures. Kass stands at the edge of a giant pile of items, towering over her head. She leans down, her purple robes brushing the glass floor that once watched over the people who lived here. Her fingers wrap around a snapshot of three people. Two women, one with a bright smile the other with a knowing smirk, and a child.

Her first reaction is to mourn them, but the reminder that she is inside a Hunger Games arena gnaws at the back of her skull. Were they real? Were they Captiol citizens dressed up? Background actors for a prop merely to add immersion.

She doesn’t know. This whole arena is full of unknowns. Her cards are useless in the cold metal of this arena, the sun and the stars are blocked out by walls. The old gods cannot reach her here through titanium. She adds the picture to her deck as her own invention.

The Family - the past.

She follows Dio through the massive living structure. They climb up the face of the old apartments. Kass finds a rhythm between the heavy suction of her boots against metal and the moment of free fall as they’re freed for the next step. It’s long, quiet work. Dio is focused on moving forward and, strangely enough, is also silent. Kass grabs the edge of a balcony pulling herself up but stops as a sound that is not their own labored breathing or boots reaches her ears.

A mechanical whirling.

Dio looks down at her before throwing himself towards a balcony. She scrambles up behind him following him through a doorway in time to see a big metal ball roll in front of them. Kass moves for her gun but Dio swings an arm across her chest to keep her back. The robot buzzed at them showing off the name on its side.

Emily? Where had she read that before?

Her watches buzzes to life but she doesn’t look at the messages. Dio, however, does and starts to call out a warning when a shot of silver flies past her head and catches him in the collarbone. He flips over the counter, his red robes a tornado of fabric as he slams to the floor. Kass quickly pulled out her gun. Another little mechanical friend whizzed for her and she smacked it aside with the barrel of her blaster before it could touch her.

Kass peers down at her watch long enough the skin the most recent messages. Ike.

Oh no Ike.

Ike appears just in time for an assault from their little metal friends. However, Emily rolls in front of him in time to take an earth shattering blow. Her shell cracks and wires and circuits spit out. Kass blinks. Blair is floating, her skull cracked open, circuits float out of the crevice in the bone.

Focus.

Kass brings up her blaster and slams the barrel across the bot that she had deflected earlier.

Kit: I’m glad you’re safe, I couldn’t keep track of everything in the Bloodbath…
Kit: I’m ok! Got a few bad bruises but I’ll be ok! I’m so happy you’re okay
Ike: I’m glad you’re safe too! Bruises will heal, death won’t... Bloodbath was a lot....
Kit: Yeah… I couldn’t keep up with a lot and I’m worried, I think I saw Roisin go down. Her name isn’t clickable either, I tried.
Ike: I left bloodbath after Blue and Blair both went down. We can’t talk to the dead... You’re not alone, are you?
Kit: Damn… I didn’t want to believe it. It all feels so unreal…. Nah, I’ve got Jacob. He got hurt pretty bad though. Still found a way to make me laugh :slightly_smiling_face:
Kit: Don’t stay alone for long Ike, I don’t want you getting ganged up on. )):
Ike: Jacob I’m glad he’s with someone like you! You’ll look out for one another.
Ike: I’ll be alone for now, we’ll see what happens the next day or so. I won’t get ganged up on :heart: I’m sure I can handle some people on my own!
Kit: Yeah, I know you’re tough. I’m just going to worry anyway. I know we shouldn’t get attached to each other and all but you matter a lot to me Ike.
Kit: Stay safe ok? I want to see you again.
Ike: I’ll stay as safe as I can. It’s better to have friends in the arena than to not have any in the arena. I’ll be worrying about Jacob and you too.
Ike: Keep each other safe? I want to see you both again.
Kit: It’s a deal ((: I’m glad you’re still alive Ike. Talk to you soon, ok?
Ike: I’m glad you’re still alive too! Yeah, we’ll talk soon!

Life lives on.

Messages sent through a watch's screen with a flickering of blue light. Worry on his lips draining, but stress of night approaching lingering to his anxiety. Weighing on top of his shoulders is the fear of being caught by others in this lab. Cold walls and cold floors, spent upon it, hiding away from Harper's alliance. Ike stares blankly at the screen of his watch for hours, watching time tick by. Snapping like a rubber band, over and over and over again as minutes turn to hours.

There's only so many drawings he could do for hours. A sigh from his throat as he rubs a finger soothingly against the cold ground, easing the anxiety of him not being able to sleep. The worry of being caught lingering in his mind. Kit would want to see him. He needed to stay alive to see them. Kit and Jacob. He needed to live in order to see Jacob Fel, the handsomest boy from Eleven. A chill runs down his spine before he lets his eyes drift for a moment. Eyes closed with the image of a fall and the awkwardness of the after effect of it, but he lets himself linger in it.

He lingers too long.

Klein comes into his head next.

The blue lights of faces appear with the capitol seal to save the day. Bright lights with dead eyes, Blair Havoc flashes with her head caved. Blue Smith follows in a flash of tears in the cargo hold. Roisin Rivero is the newest, who he can't see the dead eyes of. A sigh escapes his throat as he remembers the three dead and twenty one still alive. Lost souls in this place, all he can do is continue to live. Life lives on. They still breath the air around them, even if it's heavy with death's ever looming glare.

Silence fills him as he moves gently, knocking something barely over. The sound of metal rolling against metal is all it takes for him to jump. The fear in his eyes filling him to the brim with anxiousness. Eyes glance to the metal before he catches the chord attached to it. Silently, he stares at the thing. Large, but still has something sticking out of it. Green, metallic, and spherical. The chord ends with a prong of two ends, that seem to fit into the two holes in the wall. Clicking together, gears and electricity flow into motion. Things start moving and lights stare at him.

Red is the first thing he can see.

Fists held up in an anxious, fighting stance.

The name Emily flashes in his vision before he speaks.

"What the fuck?"

A beep sounds before, metal hits his skin softly with almost an affectionate touch. Eyes glance to the robot touching him, mechanical legs whirring as it steps back with red lights and a green metallic frame. A second of silence as he stares quietly at the thing. Emily had to be it's name. That's all he could figure out. A moment of silence is too much before he blurts out his next words.

"Did I just become a father?"

A loud beep rings in front of him before he lowers his fists gently. A silence fills him before he sighs and lets the room grow quiet again. The other robots quiet down in their glass nests. A chuckle from his throat before he shrugs to Emily. Jacob and Kit didn't have to deal with robots giving affection. At least, he wasn't alone anymore. No one asked him to tag along with them. If he asked, he was sure a few of them would let him, but no one deserved to deal with the disadvantage that he was.

"So, Emily's your name?"

Silence.

Ike lifts a piece of small debris gently before tossing it out of arms reach gently. Emily moves over, retrieving the debris. Nudging it back to him, almost as if she wanted to help him. A moment of silence before he shrugs and the word friendly appears over and over in his head. The words seem to flow now.

"You seem way more friendlier than the other bots."

A beep.

"Are any of them your friends?"

Silence.

"Who are your friends then?"

The leg points to his chest before he shakes his head and smiles back.

"Okay, I guess we're gonna be best friends forever now."

A loud beep.

"At least, I am not gonna be alone anymore."

Silence.

"It's hard being here. Everything is... unusual? I didn't even mean to be here, but I made a horrible decision, just so I could keep my title back home."

Silence.

"I'm quite the boxer, you see. I fight with my fists. Gets me into trouble sometimes, but god I miss everyone."

A beep.

"Thanks, Emily. I'll be okay. I'm sure everyone there would love you. Or well, they would because I'd make them anyways."

A quieter beep.

"You should have seen me in my last match though I...."

Time seems to pass with their conversation. All of it feels good to get out. Frustrations with his boss, the past matches that were amazing on his part, and how much he enjoyed boxing. Time seemed to fade as he continued to talk for hours. Night began to seem longer, but his eyes were growing more and more tired, until the sound of beeps and a red light send him to sleep. Dreams begin to swirl.

He dreams of metallic green, bruised knuckles, and Klein's lips.

Morning comes with a dull ache and dry lips.

There's no sunlight to wake him up further and send him into a higher plane of happiness for warmth. Instead, he yawns with the loudest sound he could make, not caring if Harper and them heard him across the room. Emily's whizzing around him in comfort before settling to staying by his side. Mornings were never a fun time for him. Ike was a light sleeper and woke up to multiple things over the night. The breathing across the room. The lights of other robots. The chill of sleeping on a ceiling, with a chill that filled his bones. Groggily he stands, stretching out as far as he can.

Emily beeps at him as he laughs in the groggy feeling of waking up. Soreness across his back from the awkward angle of the floor on his back. The hard surface didn't help that either. A moment as he stands with Emily, staring at little red eyes staring back at him. A moment is all he needs before he grabs his bag and lightly touches Emily's metal frame. The door's keypad turns green as he waves his pretty pink watch across it.

"I hope we end up somewhere where the sun can shine through. I'm sick of metal walls and florescent lights. I need some fresh air."

Emily beeps beside him as the hall extends for awhile. Fingers brush at his side as the watch buzzes on his wrist, ignoring the want to just type on it all day, he pushes forward to another door where he swipes his watch at. Red. Denied. A sigh falls from his lips as the hall continues farther and farther down. Emily is silent, except the mechanical sounds of her legs and the slight beeps she gives to him. Ike nods along to her beeps as if there was a conversation going on.

"Let's try this door, I'm sure we're gonna find something cool here!"

The keypad glows green.

Eyes scan the area before his heart sinks. Deep into a pit of empathy for whoever was once here. Piles of junk on the ground of a place long forgotten. The cracked glass of the floor spreading as far as the eyes can see. Life feels heavy in this place. Death feels nearby. A gasp from his throat as he moves past objects of things left behind. Pacifiers from a baby left there. Toys from a child who was long gone. Books that he doesn't have the time to stop and read. An emptiness fills his chest before he speaks to Emily.

"Stay close, I don't like this place."

A beep.

"It's abandoned I think? Or something absolutely terrible happened here."

Life lives on.

At least, he hoped it did for them.

Ike begins the climb, from balcony to balcony. Sculptures look elegant, but torn apart by gravity itself. A moment of silence fills him as he stares at a mural of stars and a sun. They gravitate in a field together as colors burst from the wall. The beauty of the art fills him with a drive to see the sun and the stars, but today would not be that day. Instead, he climbs into one of the homes, hiding away on his watch, ignoring the worries of his day. He talks lightly to Emily.

"This place. It's so sad. Forgotten. Broken. Empty. Alone."

Silence.

"You can see the life in these walls. I can imagine it. I could envision who would have lived here. I...It's just so sad."

Emily beeps again.

They wait in the semi-lit room. Ike talking on the watch as he lets Emily's whirling soothe him. Death surrounds them. Memories surrounds them. Souls lost in this place before. Twenty three others would join them. The whirling sounds feels like home as he leans against Emily slightly, letting himself be comforted by the robot. She doesn't feel emotions though. All she can do is stand there, obediently. Except, he doesn't believe that. He believes she could be like them. Friendly, thoughtful, and a great listener.

Ike enjoys having someone around to comfort him.

Everything was going perfectly, until it wasn't.

If there was one thing Ike knew, it was that all good things must come to an end. Friends don't exist here. Despite everything he wants to believe, friends won't exist here. Dio's message comes through as Ike is drawing the image of Emily perfectly for everyone else. The whirring was Emily's that he had been used to. Until the sound of crushing metal rings in his ears. Turning backward to see Emily smashed with one hit, but still functioning. His heart is racing at the sight of Emily throwing herself to the attacker, defending Ike from the other robot.

"Emily, you-"

Life lives on for them, but for Emily, she only had one purpose.

Protecting him.

The sickening crunch of metal crashing into metal as it tears Emily apart, circuits and wiring coming free from the the red glow of her eye stares at him. The faintest of beep sounds in the air. A silent moment of protecting him from what would have been immediate death. Ike knew what damage that hit would have done. Blair Havoc and Blue Smith would have gained a similar friend who died the same way. Instead, Emily threw herself in front of him. Threw herself into the midst of a battle for him. She protected him.

The only thing Ike couldn't do.

He couldn't protect her.

Instead of rushing the robots, Ike feels his feet move towards the electric sparks and hanging wires. Fingers touch her green metal frame which is dented now. Tears almost fall from his eyes. Emily had been with him for a short amount of time, but the comfort of not being alone made him feel safe. The idea of not having to face death by himself. The idea of having something to talk to. The idea of having a friend in this arena. All of it was shattered in a mere second. Ike should have been faster, stronger, and more attentive, but he let her down.

He let Emily down.

This was his fault.

"Emily, no. Y-you can't die on me. I-I-"

Tears start to fall.

"I'll fix you, I swear I will. Emily, please don't leave me alone in this place."

The sparks stop with a silent fuzz.

Eyes glance back to the robots, one of which, destroyed by someone. Kassandra, Jacob's District Partner, and Dio are there with their weapons striking at the robots. Kassandra destroys one and he can't help but feel pain in his heart. She could read the future. Did she know? Did she know Ike would lose a friend immediately after getting one? She had to know. Wiping away his tears, Ike does what anyone else who lost a friend to a killer. He readies his fists and widens his stance. Anger flaring from his nostrils as he speaks.

"I'm gonna kill you, you fucking Jeep."

Fist flies forward as the starry mural flickers in his vision.

Life lives on.

Robots do not.

A loyal squad they are not, because the two remaining construction robots do not hesitate to continue their attempts to fix the abnormal creatures. There is some faulty wiring somewhere, some incorrect pattern that doesn't make sense. There's no drive to fix their fallen; they know the intricacies of their inner workings and the power of rebounding from failure.

These..... things. These things need urgent fixing. Robots can wait.

Two robots are down, and Dio has fuck all to do with it. Instead, he has a sore collarbone and his shirt and cape keep getting half-swirled around his arms with his every attempt at navigating the room. His hat has fallen off in the shuffle, and he narrows his eyes to find it on the ceiling- floor? he's never going to get used to it- and mentally remind himself to grab it from the remnants of the life that has gathered in a world turned upside down.

At least he's not crying over a mechanical ball.

Ike had destroyed one of the bots with his bare hands, and for a moment Dio wonders what a boy who gets that upset over a robot could do to a person should he ever feel the need. He doesn't want to find out; he hopes Ike doesn't make any more robot friends.

Without warning, as if the Games would ever give him some sort of warning, one of the remaining bots hits him square in the back and sends him stumbling across the space. Thrusting out one of his arms to brace himself, Dio slams into a small work station in the corner, the console beeping to life under his hand as he feels the keys shift beneath him.

And all at once, he cannot help but wonder again just how much of the tilted world they've been thrown into is real.

It all feels too real.

"Hey Little Star! It's me Mommy, I just wanted to let you know how much I love you and tell you about the cat who sleeps in Mommy's bed! He is very friendly, big and ginger! You would love him baby girl. I will speak to you soon baby girl."

The shirt under his sweater snags again as he stands straight, chest too tight beneath the layers and skin too hot as he steadies himself. It's all real, and Dio knows that's on purpose. He knows he's supposed to feel like this. It's exactly what they want from him, exactly what they're hoping for, but he can't stop the way his heart stutters and clenches so quickly that he feels breathless as the woman breathes love into the words, breathes love across who knows what kind of distance to her little star, and Dio hurts.

Teeth clenched around a growl, he swings his weighted hand out recklessly in the direction of the bot that had hit him and hopes that it hurts instead.

The robot crunches under her gun, wavering before clattering to the floor. Useless. Kassandra presses herself against the nearest wall, catching her breath as the scene in front of her is played. Ike smacks a bot out of the air with his bare hands. If anything the lines in his palm indicate that he sure can throw a punch.

She looks over to check on Dio in time to see a bot knock into his spine sneind ghim sailing across the room and into a display board. Lights flicker and the wall shifts behind her. Kassandra leaps forward to avoid whatever mechanism was suddenly whirling to life when a bot slipped through the small living quarters and smacked into her right hand.

She screamed, dropping her blaster as pain paralyzed her entire body. Her hand went to her chest where she hunched over it, protecting it from another other assaults. Every joint in her fingers throbbed,and her stomach churned as the pain overtook every other thought.

Kass took a shaky breath, trying to remember how to breathe.

Get yourself together, Kass. You've had worse than a slap on the wrist.

Kass clenched her teeth and knelt down to the floor. The fingers of her left hand wrapped around the hilt of her gun. The weapon felt heavier and unruly in her non-dominate hand.

But this hand had no qualms about pulling the trigger.

Metal dents with the power behind his fist.

The robot shutters out, just like Emily's life had gone. Fingers stretch out, cracking as he stares at the destruction he's made. A piece of his heart echoes across his ears as he looks to Emily, wondering what more he could have done for her. What more he wanted to do for her. All that's left is his shattered heart and the will to keep fighting these awful things. Robots were meant to be friends, but these ones were just hurting.

They were no longer fixers, but killers now.

Just like they all would turn out to be.

"Fuck yeah, you dead Jeep!"

His foot slams hard into it's mechanical corpse, leaving a bigger indent on where he had punched it. Klein would have called him an idiot, but right now, he didn't fucking care. The moment is soiled by the other two robots, which strike Kassandra hard and Dio slightly. The sound rings in his ears as he remembers how the sound of a broken nose echoed in his own skull once, long ago. A match that ended in blood and a loss. His first loss. A hum on his lips as he swirls around to see Dio smack a robot with a fire extinguisher.

Kassandra demolishes the other one with a laser.

What.

"Is that a freaking gun?"

Instead of waiting for a reply, he swings at the robot Dio struck.

"Don't hurt Little Star! He's my friend!"
