Time was beginning to feel as fluid as the river. The Arena seemed to alternate only between inky darkness and a hazy light, making Ridley yearn for summer days spent stretched out near a sunlit window with one of the many books Pax had required her to read. Knowledge is power, she had always reminded her. After she had died Ridley would sometimes glance up from the pages at the names framed on the wall, a proud and prominent display of the debts she was owed. I learned, she would murmur, because the names were evidence that she had.

The silence and darkness seemed to stretch on endlessly. Ridley spent about an hour on watch, counting the lights that hovered over the river, before she finally heaved a sigh, stood, and trudged over to where her allies were sprawled out on the ground.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered, dropping down beside them and laying her head down close to theirs. "I know you're both awake." All of them were kept from sleep by fear or pain or memories or sheer necessity, and Ridley was done standing on ceremony. There was no reason why they couldn't suffer together.

She briefly reached her hand out and let it rest on Delaney's, a ghost of an apology for being so harsh earlier, before she lifted it and gestured vaguely to the glittering expanse of sky above them. "The stars are so beautiful. It's a shame that they're just a projection."

Looting the mill proved to be exceptionally difficult on one leg, but his allies had carried him far enough. He'd waved them off, determined to be an asset. It took him what seemed like hours. He'd hobble into a room, sink to the soft floor boards, and have a little pity party. Then, he'd pick himself up, find what was useful, and repeat the process in the next room.

Luckily for him, the treasure was lined up neatly on the walls. "I'm pretty sure it's tar," he whispered, once he had their attention.

Later, after they'd stocked up and had naps in rotation, Milo flung himself down on the dewy moss. He landed mostly on his face. He groaned. "This arena!" The lament said like a prayer into the ground itself.

He righted himself just before Ridley joined them. Dirt spackled his face. "The stars are so beautiful. It's a shame that they're just a projection."

He sat up - not exactly straight, given the condition of his limbs, but close to it. "It's a projection??" He repeated, squinting at the sky. Then, "I don't know why I thought they were real but I did. I thought we were looking at the Capitolite sky. Where are these stars from, do you reckon?"

It had taken a while for her to start feeling like herself again. She supposed chopping a boy’s head off could do that to a person. After her little tantrum, which she already regarded as embarrassing, she’d straightened up and sucked in her tears and pretended it had never happened. She was good at that, pretending she didn’t feel things. Pretending had gotten her that far. She needed it to take her all the way.

She was laying next to Milo on the damp grass, him on his face, her in a much more comfortable position on her back. When Ridley approached, he shifted. Delaney regarded her the same as she had regarded her all the other days. She had only been doing what she thought was right earlier, when she had been trying to drag Delaney off of the rooftop. She couldn’t be blamed for that.

“This is ridiculous,” Ridley said, laying down next to them. “I know you're both awake.”

With the way their heads looked all pressed together, they could’ve been mistaken for a mythical beast, a dangerous tangle of muscles always poised to kill. It reminded Delaney of home. It reminded her of her brothers. She wondered how they were holding up, watching their sister fall apart and stitch herself back together live on television. When she returned, she decided she would never ask them how they felt, and make them promise never to tell her. It was easier that way.

Ridley said something about the stars, which prompted Milo to find out that they weren’t actually real stars, to which Delaney laughed, genuinely laughed. Everything that day had been so cold and serious. It was nice to just indulge in the silly, to feel like a real teenager for once.

“Where are these stars from, do you reckon?” Milo asked.

Delaney hummed, like she was thinking hard over the question. “You know, there’s this museum in the Capitol where they have holograms of every single tribute. I bet it’s the same technology. Makes things so real that you don’t even realize they aren’t actually there.”
