They left the Gamemakers’ feast to go looking for flowers. Ridley couldn’t remember if it had been Milo’s idea or hers, but after several glasses (bottles?) of wine it had seemed like just the right thing to do. Get away from the faces that would soon be in the sky. Go to the river. Find flowers.
But once they’d managed to stagger out of the mill and into the chilled air, Ridley clinging to Milo’s hand like a schoolgirl under the guise of giving him a better sense of balance, she realized that it wasn’t a good idea at all. She nearly tripped over her own feet and clutched at Delaney’s shoulder, squinting over at the river’s shore. Even half out of her senses she knew that if any flowers had existed there once, it was too frostbitten now to have survived.
“I think,” she declared, taking a few steps diagonally before righting herself and twirling about to face her allies, “that I don’t want to look for flowers.”
Memories of Torren swam through her mind - in the woods, dying in the river, dancing - dancing. She paused, then spun toward Delaney with a wild grin. “We should dance. Torren showed me how.” Ridley pulled Milo’s arm over her shoulders until her side was pressed firmly against his. “C’mon, I’ll be your other leg. I’ll teach you both what to do.”
