Eyes I dare not meet in dreams in death's dream kingdom. These do not appear: there, the eyes are sunlight on a broken column. There, is a tree swinging and voices are in the wind's singing, more distant and more solemn than a fading star. Let me be no nearer in death's dream kingdom. Let me also wear such deliberate disguises. Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves in a field. Behaving as the wind behaves. No nearer— Not that final meeting in the twilight kingdom.

This is the dead land. This is cactus land. Here the stone images are raised, here they receive the supplication of a dead man's hand under the twinkle of a fading star. Is it like this in death's other kingdom? Waking alone at the hour when we are trembling with tenderness. Lips that would kiss form prayers to broken stone.

The eyes are not here. There are no eyes here, in this valley of dying stars, in this hollow valley, this broken jaw of our lost kingdoms. In this last of meeting places we grope together and avoid speech, gathered on this beach of the tumid river. They didn’t ask for her permission to cut off her hand, but they did ask for her permission to get rid of it.

Ridley understood the former. From the moment the blade had nearly taken it off, she’d known there would be no saving it. It had been dead weight, unresponsive and numb, and if she hadn’t been so afraid of bleeding out she would have amputated it herself. The request to dispose of it, though, had made her frown, fingers ghosting over the prosthetic she’d been gifted by her doctors. Naturally, it was the very latest technology. The finest the Capitol had to offer. The moment she’d woken up from the medicated twilight they’d kept her suspended in during her first few days out of the Arena, Ridley had requested it be plated in gold.

“What else would you do with it?” She eyed the pale, still-bloody hand warily.

“Sell it,” one of her style team responded immediately, his eyes also drawn to the subject of their discussion. The only difference was that where her gaze had held barely disguised distaste, his was full of the longing of a child staring at a shiny new toy. “Tribute limbs are worth a fortune, you know. Victor limbs are practically priceless. Anyone who’s anyone wants to own one.”

“Is that so?” Before Ridley could continue, a different member of her team interrupted, holding up a small box about the size of her palm.

“I found a gift box for Gamemaker Hale.” It glittered silver. Ridley frowned at it thoughtfully.

“I’d like something… bigger, I think. And with ribbon.” She took the box and eyed it thoughtfully. “And gold, if that’s possible. I want it to be perfect for her.”

“It’s so nice of you to send a thank you gift to a Gamemaker,” the first member of her team gushed as the other rushed off to fulfill her request. “Hardly anyone ever does, and they put so much work into the Games, after all.”

Ridley thought of every single one of her allies drawing their final breaths in front of her. She thought of Torren collapsing in the river. She thought of Efram tumbling to the ground after her final blow. She thought of herself standing alone in the snow, framed by three bodies. “Yes,” she murmured. “So much work.”

She spent all that night working on the box, doing everything she could to make it perfect. Her team member had done fabulously, finding a box about the size of a shoe box that sparkled gold and had a huge, red ribbon on it. The inside was lined with a rich, burgundy silk. Ridley must have arranged it and rearranged it a thousand times before she was finally satisfied. A tag just beneath the bow proudly addressed it to Minerva Hale, from the new Victor of the 83rd Hunger Games. She passed it off to an Avox with clear instructions to deliver it to the Gamemaker immediately. She wanted her to receive it before she was formally crowned.

The first layer of the box was covered in a delicate red paper, with a small note that read,

I owe you so much. Please accept this as the first payment I am able to give.

Beneath it, Ridley had included the tarot card she’d carried throughout her time in the Arena, gently clasped in the fingers of her severed hand.

As she crawled into bed that night, she sighed. Practically priceless, her team member had said. Good. To the rest of the Capitol, it would seem that Ridley was giving Minerva Hale a gift almost beyond value. Something told her, though, that the young Gamemaker would recognize the true message behind the gift.

Ridley Le Roux was someone who always, always paid off her debts. And with three dead allies, a district partner she’d been forced to fight, and a finale that had taken her to the brink of death, she found herself owing Gamemaker Hale so very, very much.
