I was born in a storm.

Over the rush of wind, no one could hear anything. Earlier in the day, before the storm came, the wind rushed through the trees and made them tremble like living creatures—mother tells me later that's how she knew that I was coming. Mother screamed to a starless sky, called upon the wolves for strength and the moon for grace. All that blood, rushing and rushing, and there was only the smell of ice in the air to answer.

The sky turned to darkness early, like a night that would never end, drowned out everything else. To walk into the storm would be to blind one of all senses, to lose oneself completely to the Gods.

The storm came late that year, two nights after the third full moon, darkening the world with white flakes that sought to drown out every living thing that it could lay its cold hands upon. It was supposed to be a time of blooming, a time of coming back to life, a time where the Earth woke up and remembered who she was, remembered her greatest strength was in her ability to die and yet not.

Years later, mother tells people I was born in the springtime, is afraid of them knowing I was born on a night the Gods saw fit to nearly kill us all.

"Why do I have this, Mother?" I ask, eyes wide, pinching the patch of white-blonde brighter than the rest.

She tucks a strand of hair behind my ears, weaves intricate braids into the snow-white locks night in and night out, but she never talks about the way that I am marked by the storm.

"It's a kiss from the Gods," she says. "A reminder of the night they came close too soon."
