There’s no excuse for it. He sees his brother and can only think of how much he hates him. Not for any particular reason, not one that would warrant the bruises or the sprains. One that might have you guess or try to forgive him. Instead it’s cruelty, plain and simple. And most boys are not born cruel; they learn cruelty from the world.
But Emerson is not most boys.
He likes that he can hold power over others, most of all the sport of holding it over his brother. He can hold him down, his body on top of Landon’s, hands on his wrists and look deep into his eyes with a grin. He can get real close to the boy’s struggling face, breath warm as he looks at his prey.
He used to just kick and punch but now – well, he likes the new games he plays. Holding his hand to Landon’s throat and giving a soft squeeze. He remembers the first time he realized that he had the strength to take someone’s life away. The sort of pathetic wheezing his brother made when he put both hands around his neck. He was shaking him then, hitting his head against the floor so he didn’t struggle so much. It wasn’t as though he was going to kill him.
No.
He watched the ways his brother’s breath wrasped and his eyes fluttered, and he got all red in the face. And then he let go and listened to him cry, and hold his neck and call him all sorts of names. It made him feel powerful. It made him feel good.
He’d have to try it again sometime.
