He has the little bit of paper in his wallet, tucked behind the photo of his little sister Teresa. When it’s so cold the threadbare gloves he has don’t cut it, or it’s so hot he can feel the roughness of the roof of his mouth, he’ll look at the little slip and remind himself that this is his duty.
He brings joy and sadness, news and disappointments, junk and treasure. Folks expect him daily, sometimes stopping to chat. Sometimes finding it in their hearts to offer him tea or a kind word. He’ll listen to their troubles, even if his head might be ten thousand feet overhead. He’s a much better postman than listener, but that’s the way it goes.
He takes care of his sister, and grandmother. His parents are still around, they just took off for the edge of the district one day when we was about twelve, and his sister eight. Something about a deal gone wrong at the edge of the shanty town they called home. It’s why he says he’s blessed to have this job, and not one in the refineries. Even if it means waking up early and trudging near and far across the district.
