The first time he fed a tiger, it roared and scratched him.

The scars ran pink along the underside of his forearm, three shiny streaks of marred flesh that itched every now and then. He scratched at them absentmindedly before the door to his left opened with an audience’s eager roar, and then was closed by a tiny man’s hand. “Hey, Jordan—show go well?” His mouth arched in a smile that was mirrored by the other. “As well as it can, boy,” he loitered past him in slow strides, “they are waiting for you out there.”

“Wish me luck, man.”

“There’s no luck in circus, boy. We run on fear.” From a shelf, he pulled out a flask and took a swig from it. Ty let himself mull over his words. “Aren’t you afraid every time you go out there with those animals?” The question came gingerly after a harsh swallow. “Every time you make them obey you?” he added, and that made Ty laugh.

“I don’t need to be afraid and they don’t obey me, Jordan,” he pulled himself to his feet and walked over to where a cage laid, draped in soft darkness. Behind the iron bars, wisps of gleaming black and orange paced around in impatience. A growl made the air quiver.

“They perform together with me.”

Ty unlocked the cage.

The tenth time he fed a tiger, it’d begun to trust him.
