Carbon.

It's known by the letter C and the atomic number of 6.

It belongs to the fourteenth group on the periodic table of elements.

Carbon is in everything we are and everything we have. Somehow, It is also my name and that makes me part of everything that is around me; family, friends and strangers. I am part of this gigantic family that transcends over Panem. This covalent bond is mixed with biological parents that married others and had kids. Those kids already had another set of parents and so on and so forth. It seems that even though we are all so different, we carry a bond that we can't deny.

It's family.

In district twelve, it's hard to realize we're all so connected. Merri is my step mother, who brought over two sets of twins with my dad. I think that's pure luck that she did, and they are my favorite little sisters. Argon and Xenon are the oldest set at fourteen. Complete opposites and I love them all the same, half siblings or not. Argon and I share a special bond, more on my part than anything else. See when she was younger, she had an accident. I had to have been around maybe five years old when she started choking on something. I remember it so vividly even though memories at that age are so rare to keep. I saw her face turning colors. Life was draining out of her. She stopped moving and that look she had given me right before she fell. A weird sort of instinct set in and I rushed to her side.

I called out her name, but she didn't respond.

Being terrified at such a young age, I tried to help dislodge whatever it was that was making her ill. I didn't' fully understand the severity of the situation, but I remember making her lean over and with a few hits on her back, whatever it was that was making her unwell came out. I felt like a hero. She started breathing and to this day, I never told anyone about what I did. I didn't feel that special but I learned that I could save someone and I didn't need anyone else's help.

That's where my passion came from.

My stepmother's other set of twins ended up being boys, younger by two and a half years. They just turned twelve only a couple months ago and their names are Cobalt and Mercury. It's weird having younger boys in the family because I have to share a room with them. Being eighteen, I've finally reached that level of maturity that they don't have. Bit annoying really, but I've managed to keep them in line when they get to touching my things or causing too much ruckus. I'm looking forward to moving out when I get an internship with the local doc. He's been kind enough to offer me refuge from my family while I study so distractions aren't the reason for failure. Being near the merchants side makes it easier to live, but where I'll be living is in the heart of the seam.

Caring for those less fortunate than myself seems to be my overall goal. I want to learn as much as possible. Being able to tend to those that can't give back except for the smiles on their faces or the gratitude of the last piece of bread in their store room. I felt compelled to help since my best friend lives there. I've helped him more than most despite my parents staying aloof. There have been so many nights when he'd come over and slip through my window to stay for a quick bite or to chat into the early morning. I don't know what I'd do without him. He doesn't see me for the differences that I have. He doesn't treat me any differently than someone who looks completely normal.

A few years ago, I had something called Bell's Palsy occur. It was so scary at the time and since then, the left side of my face hasn't returned to normal. My lips do not turn up for a smile, nor does my eyes fully close when I blink. It's more of an annoyance, but I've gotten used to it. I have much more respect for others now who have disabilities or needs that can't be seen.
