You're doing everything you can.

It's exhausting, day in and day out, but thrilling in a way that you maybe didn't expect. You like this work, like fighting for the people, like talking to them and hearing from them and learning what they need and what they don't. The things that the people of Ten care about, what things you care about that they want you to fight harder still for, and the things that they don't.

You're glad that people are hearing you when you say that you want to give people new opportunities, that they aren't hearing that and hearing you say you want to eradicate Ten's way of life—just expand it.

And Calliope Bloom can help you with that.

Dialing on the land line is intimidating, and dialing her is more intimidating still. It's not that you don't know her, not that you haven't really spoken much before; you've never been afraid of big names or well-known faces. She's barely older even than you are, really, in the grand scheme of things, but she's got years of experience doing this under her belt and even though you've spent those same years learning from Mace and Reggie, well. It's not the same as being the one in charge of the whole thing.

Still—"Mayor Bloom," you say into the line, voice clear. Even if the call makes you nervous, you can't let her hear that, and you know that once you begin talking about Ten and its needs you're going to hit your stride. "I had a couple of proposals for how Six and Ten might be able to help each other in the upcoming years. Are you free for a few minutes to discuss?"

The incessant ringing only serves to emphasize her migraine as she cracks one eye open to glare at the telephone. Calliope's arm doesn't just feel sluggish as she reaches out to make it stop, but mutilated, perhaps. The feeling of movement has changed and become unfamiliar. It's grotesque. Her stomach lurches. "Mayor Bloom," an agonizingly enthusiastic voice greets you, "I had a couple of proposals for how Six and Ten might be able to help each other in the upcoming years." Ten. Ten. Ten? her brain struggles to put the pieces together. Ohhhhhhhh. Petty. Petty bastard. "Are you free for a few minutes to discuss?"

This is supposed to be her level of petty, not his. "Mace, I —" Her memories of last night's conversation are murky and distant, but she recalls dialing his number and that's enough to confirm that she said any number of things cruel enough to warrant revenge-calling her back at a time when her hangover would obviously be at its peak. "You don't..." She trails off, confused. This isn't Mace's style, but... Ten. Ten. Ten? The voice isn't quite right, but she knows it. Everything very nearly adds up except for the part where she is not in the right state of mind to be doing even the simplest of math. "Sorry. Who is this?"
