Sometimes we sit around in the empty training center, passing around a flask. As trainers we all have the shared sorrow and the same sense of failure whenever it happens. Love Bellisario got so close. He was so fucking close to making it. But then, he fell as giants and Gods had before him. And once again, the last one standing was some kid from the lower districts.

All of us are here for different reasons. Some want the pride of saying they trained a Victor and led them onto the path of glory. Some just want to prove we're truly superior to the lower districts. Some are trying to fix the failures of their past and mold the current careers into everything they weren't. Me? Why am I a trainer?

I'm tired of all the fucking death. Plain and simple. I'm tired of watching kids kill and slaughter each other. I'm tired of the lies of glory and peace being spread throughout Panem. I'm tired as another teenager gets his throat ripped open all for nothing. And I'm tired of it being my fault. I'd prefer if no one died, regardless of district, but if twenty-three kids have to die year after year, I'd like the one who lived to be from District Two.

Maybe that makes me selfish. Maybe having a passiveness about district and not caring who lives or dies is more moral. But, I don't care. Do you know how it feels? Do you know how it feels to have angry parents screaming at you for all their money back as the daughter died first? Do you know how it feels to be glared at and treated like a monster just trying to buy groceries? Do you know how it feels to break down crying in front of the television screen as yet another kid you tried your hardest with died?

Part of me wished I had volunteered as a teenager. I never expected to live past eighteen - at least not living as Freya Armbruster. I expected to either die in the Arena or emerge from it a champion. But, things never went as planned. I made it to age nineteen. I wasn't a Victor nor was I dead. And I felt lost. For all of my life the training center and career life was all I had known. So, I got a job training future career.

Part of me considered breaking the cycle. If there's no one to train them, there won't be any careers. Maybe then I could go shopping in peace or I'd have time for a social life and dates. But if I didn't train them, someone else would. And if there weren't any more careers from Two? There'd still be one boy and one girl from here every year. They'd just be less prepared to face death head on.

I tend to be a quiet, though easy-going person outside of training. I actually like talking to people, but trying to train careers takes up most of my time. Even at home, I'm constantly trying to strategise. Trying to find out some sort of game plan I can give my students. Anything to help them just live. And yet, time after time I have failed. I have failed miserably.

When you're a teenager about to become an adult, they talk about all of the perks of being a career trainer. Maybe you were never a Victor, but you can shape them. You can help bring glory to the name of District Two. And it's all bullshit. There is no glory here. Whenever I leave my house I'm constantly looking over my shoulder for a Bellisario demanding to know how their son died. This is the loneliest job in the world.

And because of this, they'd never let me be a recruiter. I'm too damn honest. I'm too damn honest about the harsh reality of it all. They want someone who will smile and lie about how much fun training careers is. We're teaching kids how to murder. And maybe we do a good job at that. But we need to teach them more than murder. We need to teach them how to survive. Otherwise, we'll just keep getting wins from Avriel's and Flynn's.
