For as long as I can remember it's just been my brother and I. My parents abandoned us when we were young, left us at the district orphanage. To them we were nothing. We were nothing but the scum on the bottom of their shoes. And now that we're older? They mean nothing to us. They mean less than nothing. After all, it's because of them that we live this way.

We lived at the orphanage until my brother turned eighteen. And once he turned eighteen? They had no problem throwing him out with barely anything. So he got a job at an oil refinery. And once he had enough saved up, he adopted me legally so I could leave that hellhole.

There were times when I began to doubt him. Where I wondered if now that he was gone, if he'd ever come back to me. If his visits with me were just going to get shorter and shorter until one day he stopped coming all together. I was fourteen at the time, and I was tired of being abandoned. But, he kept true to his word. And he got me out of there before I turned fifteen.

I tried to get a job at the oil refinery with my brother, but they keep insisting I have to wait until I'm eighteen. That I should focus on school in the meantime. School doesn't pay the bills or put food on my plate. So, I do what I can on the side to make money. Though, there isn't a lot of "odd jobs" over here in Five.

District Five has become too accustomed to the wealth of oil. They've forgotten not everyone lives in luxury and some of us are still scrapping by with whatever we can get, living meal to meal, paycheck to paycheck. They don't notice me. They never had. They try their hardest to ignore the poor, poverty is a problem for the lower districts. Not the district that runs off of oil and greed.

But, they won't be able to ignore me for much longer. At least, not if I have anything to say about it. My brother has been trying to convince me otherwise, but I'm determined to do it. There's one way for us to get out of his poverty we're trapped in and actually make a name for ourselves. There's one way to make everyone see us. To see our struggle and to see our plight.

I'm going to volunteer for the Hunger Games. I've decided on it. And I'm going to come out the Victor. I'm going to show everyone once and for all not to ignore me or to take me for granted. I'm sick of it. Truly and utterly sick of it. Sick of the bullshit and the lies and the ignorance. I'm going to be a somebody, and I won't let anyone or anything get in my way. After all, I've been fighting to survive since the day I was born.

I tried telling my friends at school about my plan, and they just laughed it off. Which, I can't blame them for it. I'm not exactly a career, but it's not like that even matters anymore. Look at how many lower district wins we've had year after year. If Six and Nine can do it, why can't Five? Maybe other people here are fine with settling for a life of mediocrity, but I refuse to. People are going to remember the name Serafim Freitas.
