Hey all! Stopping by to wish this pretty special place a happy 10 years <3
I haven't been around in a while, which makes coming back today and thinking about the past ten years even more poignant. This site is now nearly as old as I was at its very beginning. Back then 13-year-old me, a seasoned one-year veteran (lol) of the interwebs, thought it was a given that all sites died eventually and that this one would be a fun place to spend a couple months, maybe a year or two, with some like-minded writers. Fast forward a decade and this place has watched hundreds of us grow up, remaining a home and defying all odds.
I have so many favorite site memories that have all blended together, so I'm just going to laundry list a few that stand out in my mind.
- All our site tinychats, and how excited we would get when we finally saw what a member looked like ~in real life~
- The failed Hunger Games(es) of 2009! Practice makes perfect.
- The 54th Games, when all weapons had the same dice roll and you could bash someone's head in with your bare hands.
- Reaping night TCs. Still is nothing quite like the feeling of that anticipation.
- The joy that was the 56th Games, which I firmly believe was the experience that truly made me a writer.
- Clearing my schedule and setting out an entire day for every bloodbath, then locking the bloodbath thread every two minutes because it was impossible to keep track of the chaos
- Seeing people start on the site with 100-word character bios and not much idea what's going on, but a huge willingness to learn—then within weeks, be roleplaying amazing characters with so much depth and some seriously beautiful writing. It's incredible how quickly we all learn from each other.
- In general, sharing the various milestones of life together with a community of people who care about one another both on the internet and off.
- And one more for the ancients: falling shoes.
Thanks to all of you who have kept the spirit of this site going in my absence. It couldn't be in better hands, and I'm looking forward to seeing how each new generation of members makes HGRPG home. To the next ten (and more) years!
