After the fight that Industria and her allies had with the two plant-mutts on their third day in the arena, they’d had a surprisingly peaceful encounter with Cedar Halt. The boy from Twelve had made tea. It reminded Dusty of her time back home in District Three. Often, she and Joule would have little ‘tea parties’ with one another, ever since Dusty was very young. Unlike many children’s ‘tea parties’, they used actual tea, which was what caused Dusty to grow quite fond of the hot beverage.

Spending time with other tributes in a peaceful situation had been nice. Unfortunately, she had a feeling that it wouldn’t last very long. The next time she saw tributes outside of her alliance, she was sure that she would have to fight them. There was really no avoiding it as more and more of the innocent people in the arena had their lives taken away from them. If Dusty wanted any chance of returning home, then she needed to fight other human beings at some point soon. She hated to think about that.

That night, Dusty slept much longer (although not much more peacefully) than she had the first two nights in the arena. She dreamt of home- of her family. Normally, that would have been a good thing. She dreamt, however, about what she and her family would be doing if she were home right now and hadn’t put her life on the line to save Plunder Theft at the reaping. When she awoke, she was sweating quite a bit, and felt a slight pain in her stomach. Was it a feeling of guilt, or one of regret? She wasn’t quite sure.

The next morning, Dusty and her friends had moved to yet another area of the arena that they were in. When the girls first entered the room, the first thing that Dusty saw were three large screens. There was also what looked to be a console of some sort. Was this a control room? Dusty wondered. It had taken until this point for Dusty to start to realize what this arena was meant to be. It was a ship of some sort, and it seemed to have crash landed. At least, that’s what the Capitol had made it up to be.

When the three girls came into the control room, though, it was made apparent that they weren’t alone. Other tributes were there, too, and unfortunately, Dusty knew what this meant. They would have to fight. They wouldn’t be able to avoid it. Plus, if Dusty didn’t move first, it’s likely that she, Nell and Sky would be hit before they could react quickly enough. Making the first move was the smartest decision in that moment. Dusty didn’t like to think about attacking these other tributes, but this was a life or death situation that she had gotten herself into the moment that she made the decision to volunteer.

Weapon in hand, Dusty quickly started to approach another tribute. When she realized who it was, though, she wanted to stop herself. It was too late, though.

”I’m sorry!” Dusty shouted at the last second as she swung her weapon.

Oblivion, a girl who’d helped her in the training center, was now at the other end of her blade.

Dusty felt like a terrible person for attacking her, but the arena gave her no choice.

It was time to fight or time to die, and Dusty chose to fight.

ORION STARCREST

There is a soliloquy of silence that follows the storm. Where once brilliant bands of gold billowed in the breeze of life, now there is nothing. A sunflower betrayed by the sun shriveled into eternal damnation. There was kindness in the breath of his words, innocence in the sentences he spoke. He was a number in an algebraic algorithm, but he was also so much more. A boy with fumbling fingers and a burgeoning beard of silken hair.

He was Royce Benstaloe and he was a friend.

Somewhere between the sobs and sorrow, Orion is aghast in his absence. His hands long to hover over every action Royce would be trying to type into his tiny tablet. It isn't until now that Orion realizes that at some place in time Royce really did become his friend. And now all too late he sits alone in the void of his missing shadow.

Eternity is infinity, and infinity is too long to never see him again.

A low-lulled vibration rumbles from the epicenter of Orion's watch. His eyes hang heavily on the words he reads. Three canons, three dead friends, and a digital space incrementally decreasing. Orion has been prepared for every puzzle so far, collected every inch of data, but somehow a small simple sentence is what sends water free from the floodgates of his eyes. Unlike Atlas, he is unable to hold up the weight of the world. He is human, and like so many others he crumbles.

Royce has left #82th-general.

Like an Epitome of Shakespearean sorrow they sit in a circle of unified devastation. This is no game or scientific theorem that Orion can hide within. It is a crucible of cruelty, a circus to feed the frenzy of hell. Orion wants to wash away the sound of trickling tears, but what can an awkward socially anxious teenager say when they all just witnessed Royce die in an instant? Probably nothing proper to the circumstances of the situation.

"Well, Royce is dead and Oblivion's District partner killed him."

Yeah, that was shit.

Orion rubs away at the soreness of his welled eyes.

"I... I just... I miss him too," knuckles turn white as nails dig into knees like gravestones into dirt "but not sleeping isn't going to solve anything. Certainly not how to undo death. I'll take first watch."

There is shock, then silence, then broken dreams.

Morning comes again with Orion leading through the winding world of white, but someone is missing. His taller shadow of security only steps behind him is gone, and he feels entirely vulnerable. It's as though a single short gust of wind could whip him off the soles of his magnetic shoes. Royce is everywhere and nowhere all at once. In robots that routinely carry out their coded orders. In the sounds of their steps as they explore. He is alive in every atom and thought of this world, except for physically. It's Death's cruelest torture.

Another opened door leads to a new source of scenery in the thematic sequence of the 82nd Hunger Games. A room of waning screens and covered cameras reveals new details as to just what exactly they are inside of. Orion's fingers flutter over a panel of controls. His grief is hidden for a second in a shroud of fascination.

"It's some sort of control center, I wonder whether I can code into the system somehow. It does look rather short circuited though..."

His voice trails off into concentration as he takes a closer look at all of the screens. It's only the sound of tearing flesh and the scent of blooming blood that places his intrigue into pause. He sees a sea of red, a familiar face turned towards Oblivion with deadly intent. In a shadowed place of sadness within Orion's chest, even the violence reminds him of Royce. His hands unveil a twin to the weapon that stole his friend from him. But reason outweighs reaction.

"Industria?"

He asks as if he really doesn't know. More figures follow their smaller friend with fast approaching footsteps. By the time they arrive, Orion is already piecing together a plan based on the factors of their movements. His plan removes Industria entirely, if she wants to wage war against Oblivion he won't interfere. In the same spot that thinks of Royce within the heart of his mace, Orion partially blames Oblivion for his death. She was their victim, not Royce. He paid her price.

"I don't imagine all of us just get to walk away from this, huh?" Orion says with his voice reaching out to Industria and her allies. "Someone always has to die, isn't that fucked up?"

Orion's face slightly contorts, he normally shies away from such profanity, but right now he is raw and exposed. He misses his friend and more than ever he isn't willing to lose another. Maybe today they can win. Maybe tonight the grief will be a little bit smaller.

The moment haunted Cyril every time he closed his eyes.

Royce. The older boy from 10 who struggled with technology. Gone with a swing of a mace to the head. At first it had seemed like a dream. Like this was all a play, and Royce would soon stand up to take a bow. Like the cannon that marked the end of his life was no more than the booming applause from a crowd. But he was gone. Cyril had fought so hard to try and keep Orion from dying, only to learn Orion wasn't the one in death's hands.

Cyril had seen many tributes die over the years as he watched past games unfold back home. This death was a beast of its own; a reminder that death was nearby and closing in, like a wildcat stalking its prey. And it had taken someone Cyril counted as a friend.

The aftermath of the death was a blur to him. The fighting had ceased, some words exchanged. Cyril remained quiet, fighting the urge to scream at the boy who took Royce's life. Pushing back the tears that threatened to spill from his eyes. He was determined to remain composed for the sponsors who would undoubtedly be glued to their screens in this moment. He wanted to show he was strong in this moment. The tears could wait until later.

After a few agonizing seconds, it was time for the remainder of his alliance to move away from the area, distance themselves from the other tributes. Allow for Royce's body to leave the arena for good. Cyril turned his jetpack on and soared off with Oblivion and Orion. Cyril looked at the battered boy from 3. He wasn't in good shape; they needed to find somewhere to rest and let him heal up. He didn't want to lose a second ally today.

Once a suitable distance had been travelled and no other tributes were in sight, they stopped. As soon as Orion was in a stable state, bandaged up and chewing on some medicinal herbs from the lab, Cyril let himself mourn. Silent tears streamed down his face as he replayed Royce's death over and over in his head. How Hanaa had blocked Royce's attack. How it had left Royce unable to protect himself against Sullivan's attack.

This mental torture went on for ages, until his watch lit up and marked the impending arrival of nighttime with the evening anthem. Cyril watched as the first face appeared. The girl from 4 was a surprise. She had been strong in the training center, and had been close with Eos. And now she was gone. Then there was the boy from 6. Cyril realised his death meant District 6 had no more tributes left to fight. The first District to have to accept nobody will be coming home. And then it was Royce. Seeing his face glowing on the watch seemed to cut even deeper. It was official: Royce was gone.

The same look of sadness that has covered Cyril's face is mirrored on the faces of his allies. Orion is the first to speak. "Well, Royce is dead and Oblivion's District partner killed him." It was factual, in true Orion style. He wondered how Oblivion must be feeling right now. How would Cyril have felt if it had been Eos taking the life of his ally? Orion continued. "I… I just… I miss him too. But not sleeping isn't going to solve anything. Certainly not how to undo death. I'll take my first watch."

Cyril knew he was right. They needed to sleep if they wanted to stand a chance in whatever tomorrow would throw their way. So that they could fight and survive and not let Royce die in vain. And Cyril spoke the first words he had spoken in what felt like ages.

"Let's do whatever we can to win. For Royce."

As Orion prepared for the first watch, Cyril fell gently into sleep, to be greeted by demons in his dreams.

As morning arose, the trio couldn't wait to leave behind the area full of pain and loss. Soon the towering buildings were gone, and they were surrounded by hastily covered computer screens and tabletops filled with an assortment of buttons. Orion lit up, fascinated by the technology in front of him. Cyril was glad his ally could find some joy, even if it was just for a moment.

And a moment is exactly how long it lasted before the small, red-headed girl brought chaos with her. Cyril heard her yell something as she sliced her knife into Oblivion's shoulder. It was Industria, the girl from District 3. She wasn't alone, two other girls revealed themselves to the trio. Cyril recognized them as being from Districts 5 and 8.

How quickly reality had returned. I felt like only moments ago that Cyril had to fight, had seen Royce fall at the hands of others. And now he might have to relive the experience again.

Orion ran towards the girl from 5 with supersonic mace in hand. Cyril reached for his weapon and followed suit. The battle for life was on.

Oblivion: If you wanted me to feel bad for what I did, for killing Blue, you've done a terrible job at it.

Hanaa: Who says i was trying to do a good job at it? You murder an ally. A friend. You caused pain, and even though death is inevitable here, it does not take the sting out of it.
Hanaa: and now we’re even. A life for a life. Take care of orion. That gash on his stomach looked pretty gnarly.

Oblivion: We are even, but for how long? How long until we strike at each other once more? How long before another one of us falls? A life for a life won't cut it in here.
Oblivion: And it does hurt a lot. Killing someone. Watching them fall lifeless.
Oblivion: Everything about this place reminds me why I never became a career despite living in a career district. Why volunteer for something like this when all is does is lead to death in the end?

Hanaa: one, i never asked you to justify anything about your life to me. I come from seven and you come from one. Even if you werent a career, you still carry that branding, which means you are still considered lethal. To make it worse, you have reinforced that by killing Blue.
Hanaa: everything about the games blows ass, but we were chosen to be here, and that means we have to leave certain parts of ourselves at the tubes we entered through. I might not want to be here, but I need to show someone that as easy as it is to give life, its harder to lose it.
Hanaa: i hope we do meet again oblivion, and i hope you come at me with everything you have, because i wont be holding back either. The only way this ends is in our collective deaths. Only one makes it out. This isnt the 80th. I am not Lex. You are not Bette.

Oblivion: We can sit here trying to justify actions for what has happened, but like everyone else, I want to live. I never said I am Bette, but what I do know is that I'm not a cold blooded monster that kills for fun. Blue dying took a piece out of me, but I can't let that devour me right now when the game is still going strong.
Oblivion: But if you want to see a ruthless side, I'll give it to you, and I won't show any mercy.
Oblivion: We'll fight, and may the best person win

Hanaa: im not here to justify any actions. I didnt ask you too. And i would never ask you too. This is the hunger games. Not the best intentions games. I could give a rats ass about anyone’s feelings at this point. I have the battle wounds to prove that no one gives a shit about mine.
Hanaa: good. Bring it blondie. You might have been spared some bruises this fight, but if we see each other again, i dont think you will be as lucky.

Oblivion: I look forward to that day. Maybe it'll happen sooner rather than later. No apologies. Nothing. Just the two of us fighting it out. It's the games after all, and apologies don't mean anything in here.

A heavy heart slams against her ribs over and over as the world continues moving around her. It hurts losing someone. It hurts becoming friends and building relationships, but nobody will ever understand the burden she carries. Hanaa wants her dead while Sullivan is wishing her the best, yet none of it matters.

Shaky hands hold a piece of paper in front of her. A picture. Someone colored it, and while it's nothing much, she can't help the tears streaming down the side of her face. Her entire world is crashing down around her. Blue had a family. Friends. People at home. A story waiting for someone to tell, and she took that away from him. Yet it wasn't until Sullivan stole the life of her friend, of Royce, that she realized just how cruel this place is.

It's her fault. She shouldn't have engaged them. She shouldn't have shot at them. She shouldn't have done anything. Sullivan may have had the killing blow, but she's the one who caused it directly, and it's tearing her apart.

I'm sorry, Royce. Please forgive me.

How can she expect him to forgive her when she can't even forgive herself?

It's not my fault. It's Sullivan's.

But how can she accuse him when she's just as guilty as he is?

She doesn't blame him because she can't. She has no right to. Nobody can blame anyone, and despite Hanaa thinking it's personal, it's not. She chose this for herself. She volunteered. Oblivion didn't. She didn't ask for this, and yet self righteous people are trying to infiltrate her mind. Trying to turn her into something she isn't. Trying to take control of the world she's secretly living in, but Hanaa has another thing coming.

It's hard to swallow as the tears slowly go away. Each breath catches in the back of her throat as she leans against a wall drawing her knees closer to her chest. Family is important. Friends are important, yet she doesn't want to lose herself and become something she's not.

Being here is awful, and she didn't choose this. They chose this for her. They called her name, and nobody cared enough to save her, and now she has to live with what's simply keeping her going. Yet everything isn't that easy. Just lifting the jug to take a drink of water is taking a lot out of her. She's tired and needs to sleep. She's unsure of where to turn in life, but she knows she needs Orion and Cyril. They're keeping her going, but for how long?

She has a desire to escape this place, but at what cost?

Orion speaks talking about taking watch and how they can't bring the dead back, and it breaks her heart even more. She's tried so many times, and so many times she's failed. It all makes sense now, but her mind isn't there anymore.

"Yeah. Wake me up when it's my turn to watch. We still have a lot ahead of us." Her words are quiet as she looks away.

It's all her fault.

None of it matters anymore because she lays down on the ground hoping to find some rest, and she closes her eyes allowing herself the chance to drift off without a care in the world. Only the buzzing of her watch wakes her up as the anthem begins blaring throughout the arena.

Six have died. Eighteen are still alive living inside this godforsaken place. Seventeen more have to die. Seventeen more innocent lives waiting for slaughter, and it bothers her more than anyone will realize.

Once the faces go away, she drifts back off into the dreamworld hoping that her friends will keep her safe.

Soon she's awake following behind her allies unsure of where to go. This place has turned into a giant maze of obstacles standing in her way. Not to mention it's super quiet. Every hair stands on end as she continues making her way through this place. All she wants is a chance to live. A chance to make it home to her family, but even then the price of survival is higher than she even realizes.

One room leads to another, and then they're in an entirely different part of the arena. What can she do?

The question is cut short as the tiny girl she helped in the Capitol comes charging towards her with an apology slipping from her lips. With a shrug of her shoulders, Oblivion presses the button on her jetpack preparing to fly away, yet she has unfinished business -

"Sorry doesn't cut it here."

Sorry means nothing. Everyone is trying to live, and Oblivion won't fault anyone. Yet she's sliding around trying to avoid being hit even harder. A thousand thoughts run through her mind as everything slows down.

"So don't apologize anymore."

It's a demand, yet her voice is calm because she doesn't want anymore emotions leaking down her face as it had done the night before. Maybe her allies saw her, maybe they didn't. She doesn't care because she's human and every human has the right to cry. Sullivan was right, she didn't choose this, yet this young redhead from three did.

"Nobody can fault you for doing what you have to do to live."

She backs away readying the gun like she had done so many times before, yet her feet are sliding, and it's incredibly hard to move. Orion and Cyril are attacking Sky, and Oblivion wants to simply run away to leave them to fight, but she refuses to leave them behind. Her eyes dart back and forth as it shatters even more. Industria doesn't deserve this, yet she chose it, and she had to have known would would happen. It's not personal. None of this is, and Hanaa can think whatever she wants, but Hanaa chose this.

Dusty chose this.

Orion chose this.

Oblivion didn't.

She closes her eyes blinking the tears away, and then she fires without a second though because at the end of the day, she simply wants to survive.

After the fight, i got distracted by my watch. I heard there was a nice tea party that happened, but I never really liked tea. Or parties. So things worked out nicely for me. I did regret making certain comments after I realized WHY certain people were removed from the chat, but it's not like anyone's going to actually remember that ever. I mean 23 of us are gonna die and the winner probably won't think about that specific mistake. Right?

The morning after felt a tad chillier than the day before. Maybe this is why dad doesn't like it when people touch the thermostat because I feel slightly uncomfortably cold, and I don't like this. The trio of us make it to somewhere else. It had all sorts of electronics and gadgets and stuff, and I figured that Sparky would feel at home. Is she from 3?

Not even a few steps in my feet fly away from under me and I land on my ass. "That was a big oof, wasn't it?" I say to no one in particular. Struggling to get up, I take a few more short steps before falling down again, this time face first. "Well gosh damn, I can't walk to day. Anyone else has this problem?" I almost make it up again, but sadly gravity seems to REALLY want me to go out with the floor.

Suddenly pain erupts from places that it shouldn't have. At least not where I would have expected. I didn't realize falling could cause broken bones and bleeding. Hoped I’d see the impermanence of the world. He was never the best shephard. But he tried. “There will always be something, always, that you hold to, that you cling to. You will want it to last much longer than it ever plans. It won’t, Cornell.” Then there was nothing good to hold to, cling to. I was alone. When I was with others, we were all spaced out. All very much still alone. His words swam through my head on a jet stream. Out before I dipped my toes. Why bother, I thought. I shrugged. I swallowed a pill.

Now I know what he meant. I know that nothing lasts. I see the impermanence. I see it when I pick myself off the icy floor and find three new figures in far too close proximity. I see it when that girl blasts Dusty in her core. I hear it in Sky’s cracking ribs.

It is half an hour earlier.

I am happy.

I wake up with two people who have risked themselves for me. Put themselves in danger for me. For someone they’ve only just met. For someone they can’t bring home. I feel rejuvenated. A full night’s sleep, largely due to the expert foraging of Cedar Halt. I pick up my wrist to message him a ‘thanks.’ The screen blinks (1) New Message! I open it, and there is warmth. A subtle joy stirs in my stomach. I’m at once mortified and moved, newfound camaraderie as much boon as bane.

It’s a good problem to have. At the very least, it’s not the worst. We’re not in any immediate danger. There’s always the threat of emotional turmoil ahead, but I firmly push it aside. Dr. Eams would be proud. Choosing to embrace the positive, to not dwell in the deep end.

Elite asks how I slept.

Nell: dude I slept like a rock. a space rock.
Elite: Never got that phrase. Rocks don’t sleep. They are just rocks.
Nell: hard, dude. it means i slept hard. space hard
Elite: Oh. Well that isn’t obvious.

I chuckle and return my wrist to my side. The girls are starting to move. I join them. And I am happy.

Arm hair stands straight when we pass through the airlock into the next room. It is cold, and for a moment I hear her calling. But I push her away. For the first time, I tell her no. Not now. Not when I am doing this well. I have friends, I’m sobering up, I’m in a spaceship. Everything is going right. I hold on to that. I cling to it.

Dusty is already ahead of us when Sky’s feet fly. She smacks the ground hard, and I can’t help but laugh. "That was a big oof, wasn't it?" I nod, water in my eyes. I’ve never been out-klutzed before. It’s nice. When she stands she slides again, and a sharp burst of laughter is cut short. Her feet slip back and she lands on her face. I pick up my feet to run check on her, but my first step feels like deja vu. I slip, heels over head, and slide across the floor into a metal wall. I blink twice before erupting, seeing nothing but freshman antics and high spirits forever. I’m laughing and thinking about inviting everyone to play board games. I’m laughing and thinking about being home with Dusty and Sky, visiting Cedar and Elite at the Ratmas markets, seeing Hanaa in a store and walking another direction, Eos….against my lips…

I’m laughing and praying this lasts forever. The happiness. The hope. Crack. No one hears my prayers. Not even Dr. Eams.

I pick myself off the ice. “Bastards,” I mumble. “Somebody has to die,” I hear the first boy to hit Sky say. If the good and the bad all fade, I hope he fades faster.

“Somebody does have to die,” I growl and swing.

"Industria?" Orion asked as if he didn't know. He spoke more words after that, before he struck Sky, but Dusty didn't respond to him. She didn't have a desire to. Orion wasn't supposed to be an enemy, but she'd just made him into one.

When the fight began, Dusty wasn't sure what she expected to happen. She wasn't sure whether she expected the alliance they fought to take more damage than them, or to do more damage than them. Unfortunately, the other alliance was certainly doing more damage than she, Sky and Nell. She could hear the cracking of Sky's rib and saw the gash form on Sky's arm. Then, she felt pain. For the first time since the bloodbath, she'd been the one who was hit. No more mutts just swinging for her and missing. No, this was so much more. Oblivion's laser beam struck Dusty in the stomach, and she yelled out in pain.

Sky and Nell both attacked Orion. Sky asked them to leave us alone. Nell responded to Orion's words instead.

"Sky, I started this. It's my fault. You don't deserve this pain," Dusty told her. "I don't think they'll be leaving us alone any time soon."

The girl from Three turned her attention back to Oblivion. She was her target right now. She had decided that she had to fight her. They'd both hit one another, and that was likely how it would continue to progress as this fight went on. Dusty tried to push the thoughts out of her head about what her mother would think of her carelessly starting a fight. Would she think she was dumb? Would she be disappointed in her? Dusty couldn't let herself focus on that for too long.

She had to just keep fighting.

Oblivion's words met Dusty's ears.

"Sorry doesn't cut it here." Oblivion was right. "So don't apologize anymore."

"Nobody can fault you for doing what you have to do to live," Oblivion continued.

"You're right. We're just trying to survive." Dusty said this, hating to think about the meaning of her words. Survival in here meant killing. Just trying to survive was just trying to kill without being killed in return.

She swung her weapon once more.

ORION STARCREST

Suddenly the animation of action takes hold of the room. Feet find footing on a slick sheet of ice as cold computing eyes watch with wavering interests. A world running on harvesting the lives of children cannot commit to absolute enjoyment until true terror strikes in the song of canon. Meanwhile, Orion finds himself fixated in the center of their show. Can Larceny Theft see him? Does he see now what he saved him from suffering again? Does he even really care?

Orion's eyes flutter like falling snow.

That doesn't matter now.

Curving the edge of his mace into the ice, Orion creates a pole of stable structure. Latching onto it with fiercely furled fingers, he watches what unfolds before him. Delirium dances as the main figure of the scenic slaughter. Bodies bash against both ground and flesh as words of war ring out with the truest of intentions. Just a day ago they were the ones of venom viciously spewed from the mouth of District Seven. Today, they are fueled by the unification of familiarity and foreign. Home and afar.

Nearby, red meets with blonde in a blossoming battle of ideals. They are two figures, two friends, each trying to kill the other. Orion could turn the heat of his mace against the heart of his home in prevention of additional loss, but still he looks away from their blood and hides his hearing from their words. If either is to die he wants nothing to do with it, not even a glance. He shared sentences with Royce, secrets and advice. Orion has always been better as a robot than a human after all, why now should he change that? Emotions are messy, equations and patterns are not.

Orion looks away towards Industria's allies, he opts to optimize the following seconds to secure strategical thought processing.

"Have you all lost anyone here yet?"

Orion's eyes sink as he speaks.

"Have you felt your hearts burst and at the same moment sensed all the people cheering while watching your friend die?"

Orion's newest plan initiates, his mace slamming for a second into the ice next to him.

"Because, if you have... then like me you will do everything it takes to avoid it again."

He aims and uses his rooted mace like a launch. Then with a single short spurt from his jet back Orion slides swiftly across the ice, his mace and Royce's weight swinging into the air alongside him. He can almost hear the sound of the Capitol crowds cooing at such a sight.

The room echoed with the cacophony of fighting and bloodshed. Six tributes engaged in battle as they fight desperately to survive another day, another minute. Oblivion was in a battle of her own, facing off against the red-haired girl from 3. Cyril didn't have time to think of them; he had his own battle to fight.

He and Orion were locked in combat with the other two girls. Cyril had managed to get a hit on the blonde from District 5, his mace leaving a large gash in her bicep. But she and the girl from 8 ignore him, instead focusing their attacks on the boy beside him.

Someone always has to die.

Orion's words had echoed in his mind. How twisted they were, and how true. Death is imperative in here. For the Hunger Games. For the Capitol. It is for this purpose that Royce died. Like so many tributes had before him, and so many more tributes to follow him. And it was for this purpose that Cyril may die. Perhaps today, perhaps tomorrow. Another unnecessary death made necessary for the Games. Another family forced to watch their loved one take a final breath.

Suddenly Cyril was thinking of his parents, back at home and surely watching his fight. So afraid of watching their son die and yet so unable to stop watching. He thought of Jools. How dark was her world now that he wasn't there to show her the light? Does she still look for the stars at night, or have the shadows of the night overwhelmed her? His heart ached.

He had to stop thinking of them, he had to focus. They were safe from the hands of death after all. It was Cyril whose world was at risk of falling into the darkness of death. He turned his pain into strength and determination. He would fight to live, to return to his family. He would do whatever it took to make sure they wouldn't have to watch him die today. He had to tell himself that every bit of pain he caused in this arena was to relieve the pain felt by the ones he loved. And he was sure they needed all the relief they could get.

He rose his mace once more and swung.

Every part of her being aches, yet she pushes the thoughts away knowing what has to happen. Hanaa said she came from a career district. She's lethal. She's a career despite never going through that exact training. She wants to live, to survive, but the entire world is weighing against her. Nothing is allowing her the chance to prove just who she is, and having the very first kill of the game only proves Hanaa's point.

Sullivan's right though, and Oblivion doesn't plan on losing herself inside here. She's not a cold blooded monster, and she'll fight to prove it.

The ground is slippery, and every movement is harder and harder, and she's so afraid of falling and breaking her neck or something. The others are struggling as well, and it's almost like the Gamemakers wanted to watch them fail at every little thing they do.

At the moment, she's grateful because she sees the sword come flying at her face, and she's running away before accidentally sliding beneath it. Blood gushes down the side of her face as pain rips through her cheek. Tears pool in the corner of her eyes, yet she blinks them away, but she winces fighting with all her strength to not cry out at all.

This isn't the time nor place for that.

She looks at Orion and then at Cyril. They're fighting their own battle trying to stay alive, and this battle she's in is hers. It's her fault Royce died, and maybe this is a way to make up for it. Maybe they can finally understand the pain and weight she's carries if they take a life like they haven't done before.

It's harder than anyone can ever imagine.

Her attention turns back to the young girl, and it shatters her heart as she slides away. The smallest have a chance of being broken, of picking up the pieces and sliding through the games without a care in the world, and Oblivion knows everyone inside this place is dangerous. Industria is no different. A young girl volunteering for this place has to have a reason, and Oblivion isn't about to find out why.

A heavy sigh leaves her chest as she aims the gun once more.

In a place where it's kill or be killed, Oblivion chooses to kill whether she wants to or not. Maybe then her or one of her friends can make it home alive. It's the least she can do.

The next words that came out of Sparks made my heart sink, but I didn't really expect anything else. I knew we'd have to face off with others eventually, but I wish I could have avoided everyone a lot longer than now. Just wish they'd stop hitting me. It's starting to hurt, and I don't like it.

More talking happens and I don't listen. It doesn't matter to me. They aren't talking to me so why should I care? This whole thing isn't about to smack talk or to taunt or gossip. It's to survive, and that's what I plan on doing. Hopefully at least. Maybe if I get out of this fight I could somehow stop all this bleeding. At this point, do I really want to deal with all the soreness and pain from these broken bones?

My last attack didn't land as well as I hoped it would. Just like the plant bois. Do what you did to the plants to these guys. They aren't here to be friends. They want to outlive me. But you won't let that, will you? I lift my gun and get my target in site. "I guess you guys won't go after all." Finally took me that long to figure that out? Nice... I take a deep breath, hold and squeeze. Just focus on them and nothing else. Don't let them escape. You have to survive.

I expect it from the boys. Silence in their pursuit. No need to explain themselves. Their actions are forgiven from birth. Their apologies unspoken. Unnecessary. I expect them to beat us with flails and firearms and feel vindicated. To leave our bodies unattended, checked only for our weapons. Forgotten.

Orion and Oblivion both surprise. The other one impresses the way an old mule wouldn't.

Orion for his words. His warmth. "Have you all lost anyone here yet?" He asks and I think of Raisins. It was unspoken, but there was something there. Something that makes me smile. The boy from Dusty's district doesn't hesitate to subvert expectations. To run against the grain. He goes on, and my mind wanders to her.

To Oblivion, for her coldness. She strikes Dusty silently, icier than the floor. I stand, fists clenched and lip bit. My feet slip, but I stay standing. Stay staring at the girl pointing a gun at a child, a child that I can't let die, that I love. She knows better. She knows better. I'm furrowing my brow harder than ever. I'm scowling like I smell skunk. I'm ready to subvert my own expectations.

"...you will do everything it takes to avoid it again." He's right. I will.

He blasts himself forward, sliding on ice with jetpack pulse. There's another crack, and a stray donkey in a spaceship whacks Sky in the stomach. I'm angry. I'm angry, but not at them.

I'm angry at her. Oblivion. Oblivion. Oblivion. "Oblivion!" I shoot forward, boosted by jetpack, sabre out and aimed for traitor. "Get the FUCK away from-" -at the last second, he speeds into my path. I don't have time to react. I skate sword-first into Orion.

Dusty hears Orion speak more words as he strikes Sky again, but she ignores whatever words they may be. Right now, she just feels anger as the boy from her District and his silent friend attack Sky once again. Sky is Dusty's friend. She wasn't going to just watch her die and not fight back. This time, Oblivion stops speaking as she hits Dusty. The young girl feels pain in her forearm as Oblivion's laser connects, but she tries her best to ignore it, gritting her teeth through it all.

"I guess you guys won't go after all." Sky's words won't completely cover up the pain that she must be feeling. Dusty knows the pain is there as she sees the girl's arm break and a gash form upon her stomach. Sky is strong, though. She doesn't complain about the pain. Surely she must be in more pain than Dusty has ever been, yet she's so strong in response to it, still fighting.

Tears form in Dusty's eyes, and one falls down her cheek. Everything is chaos right now, and Dusty only blames herself. She was the one who started this fight. If Sky dies here, Dusty will never forgive herself. Never.

Nell screams at the girl from One for hitting Dusty, but Orion is in her way. Orion gets hit again, but it's not enough to stop him- to kill him. How cruel did Dusty have to be to want Orion's body to fall right now? Or, perhaps she wasn't cruel, and she was only hoping the boy would fall so that Sky could continue to stand. Sky was her friend, after all, and Dusty cared for her. She cared for her so dearly, despite only knowing her for a few days. She already felt like family to Dusty.

Pushing her red curls out of her face, Dusty readied her sword to hit Oblivion again.

Another tear falls.

"I won't give in," Dusty said, her voice shaking.

She swings her sword.

There is a moment, a second in space where Orion's thoughts aren't clouded. There isn't math running in constant computation. There aren't trivial theorems turning into complex arithmetic. All that he hears is her words, wrapped in the thorns of vice and dipped in the cold of ice. All that he sees is her setting straight towards Oblivion with anger holding her heart. And suddenly it all doesn't matter, where the blame sits or where the weight of Royce's death belongs. It only takes a moment, and he's thrusting his own skin between Oblivion and the blade.

Mace meets sword and the offensive hilts.

A new scratch sears into Orion's skin.

His next words fall to Oblivion.

"Be careful."

Orion had seen it in the girl from Eight's strike. The way her sword was swinging and the angle of attack she was utilizing. There was death tied to tip of her blade like the fire of a dragon. Oblivion had been oblivious to the unexpected assault, her eyes trained on the tiny terror sharing the title of Three. It would have been over in an instant, another canon cracking the air as loudly as Royce's bones had broken. His movement surprised even himself, but he had just said it after all.

He will avoid another absence.

He shocks himself again, a short scoff of laughter stems only inches from the face of the girl he just deflected.

"I guess you do understand."

His eyes hold hers.

"I'm sorry then, not for the fight. But for whoever loses, for that feeling."

Orion spends no time in waste shooting with a burst of speed away from the site of the strike next. A canon had been prevented this time, but what happens the next time he isn't paying attention to every aspect? His body almost laughs for him at the question. It's simple, he never stops observing, never ceases analyzing. It's the one thing he has poured every piece of himself into. His life has been one of watching and solving, he isn't going to obliterate his identity in here. Even if this place is hell, it's a puzzle he can figure out.

Setting his focus back onto the blonde from Five, Orion begins to gather further information on her status. She's hurt, her blood joining with the ice on the floor and covering the circumference of his mace. He can't stop now though, every factor feeds into the same conclusion. Continued hostilities is the only option, even if casualty can come from Orion's actions. He feels the fire of his jet back burn as he begins again towards her.

Lifting his mace into the air, Orion is just securing his own angle of action when he spots motion emerging from his sides. The equation adjusts rapidly. He swings the mace purposely passed his target's head to propel into a turn, one that sets him perfectly back to face the fight. One more solid strike isn't worth anything if he is taken out by a swift surprise. Now he can see what is coming.

She was in bad shape. Blood was pouring from the wounds that covered the girl from District 5's entire body. And yet she was still there, unyielding and ready to fight with everything she had left.

It made it so much harder for Cyril to fight.

He couldn't forget that she was in the same position as him; a girl who didn't have luck on her side, forced to fight and kill in order for her to live. She too had found her allies and formed a new family of her own. And she too was willing to fight alongside them, a desire to protect them. Hoping that together they can be sure one of them would go home. As different as they were, Cyril and the girl from 5 were also the same.

It was a reminder that Cyril was just one of many kids in here, fighting hard for the chance to live. To him this girl was an enemy. To her, he was the bad guy. He was different things to each tribute in the arena, each person watching the Games from the safety of their home. Enemy. Ally. Son. Brother. Forgettable. Remarkable. Friend. He was the protagonist of his own story. The girl from 5 was the protagonist of hers.

And he was trying hard to finish the tale of the girl from District 5.

But for what? Cyril hardly knew the girl. There was no bad blood between them. They may as well have been strange faces to one another, seen briefly in a moment, forgotten even sooner. It was by merit of the Games that they interact, have to remember each other's faces. It is for the Capitol that they fight to the death.

Cyril closes his eyes, swings his mace at the girl, and waits for his own heart to shatter into a million pieces.
