A patchwork of moonlight and shadow dappled her as she sneaked through the night. Steady as a tree, quiet as a lamb, her steps never wavered or made a sound. She was a thing of the forest, and it a protector of her. The prophecies in the entrails said it so.

The moon was bright, a rime of white, and silvered by its light, the forest had never looked so inviting before. She heard them all: rabbits, owls, wolves, and …

oh, how interesting. A human.

She slipped the lamb mask down her face. The pulse in her throat quivered like a bowstring. The night air called her to the figure, to her hunt. She welcomed it—as always. The elders had made their words very pertinent: no human can go beyond the sacred groove, no humans may pass through.

And if the old gods willed it so, then it shall be done.

Helene wrapped her fingers around the comforting curve of her bow as she notched it. The figure was soon to vanish, but not under her—their— watch. In the dark, somewhere near her, someone else also crept towards the man.

None can escape the swift release of lamb’s bow, but if by a miracle they do, it is their fate to fall down wolf’s jaws.

She draws a breath in.

And then she releases.
