This was their retribution. Led by the lone surviving member of an otherwise wiped-out group, the Triple Horns were founded entirely on vengeance and tonight, it all paid off in spades. The young king watched as the brood mother sent her soldiers in to be killed, time and time again outmaneuvered by his updated and clever tactics. He'd retained over 90% of his forces, and only a measly 20% were injured. This was more than victory. This was annihilation.

He croaked, resigned and lost within his reverie until the gods had descended upon them.

It happened quick- too quick, and not even seemingly on purpose. He heard his forces groaning with alert, some tossing their horns back and pawing at the dirt with their scaled, webbed feet. They hungered for more victory, and with the gods so close, the young king became convinced he could best them.

He blinked once, slow and solemn, and then he croaked a disturbingly-long, held out war cry. His men were happy to oblige.

I really fucking hate dominos.

Well, I should say I hate the domino effect. I've gone through withdrawal a handful of times; I mean, what addict hasn't? It comes with the territory, you know? Yet, it always starts the same and turns into those damn dominos. It starts as something small that I notice on the edges of, well, me and then it just becomes some falling force I have no power over. Let's just say you get very good at noticing when you've gone too long without taking more: aka me right now.

The sun isn't even fully down by the time I've managed to uncover my, as Maze calls it, Mech from the sinking sands. However, just standing here in front of it I feel exhausted. Sweat is literally streaming in a line down my spine, but I don't even care. All that sounds good right now is curling into a ball somewhere quiet. Lucky for me, I just so happen to have unburied the perfect place.

Now at this point, I know this is just the crash. No matter what, this happens every time because with every high there's also a matching low. It's sort of the cardinal deal and why it's incredibly dangerous. Normally I'd just take more to offset the low and then boom artificial happiness reobtained, but I can't do that this time. No instead, just like those damn dominos, this crash is going to extend further into an all out shit show.

Hey, on a positive note, I'll be clean.

Pulling myself up towards the hatch on the top of my Mech, I give a glance over to the others. They seem pretty caught up with their own new machines and from what I can tell this is probably where we are crashing for the night. Thank Ripred.

"I'm gonna get a little rest. Wake me up when you need me."

I say to Maze who is the closest one to myself at this point. Then, without another word, it's down and into the hull of the Mech for me. I wish I could say that it feels like I blink by the time Maze is knocking on the hatched door, but despite how tired I feel I can't settle. I get the feeling by the way she's looking at me that she's checking up on me. Yeah well, there's probably no hiding this from her after all.

Outside the Mech, the air is at least cooler in the night. The anthem was awhile ago as was the start of all the devilish screeching that's filled the silence. I'm guessing that means I'm the last watch shift before morning. If I can even call it my shift. I've gotten used to knowing what it feels like when someone is keeping tabs on me. I know Jesse is never fully asleep a lot of the nights. He's scared what would happen and I don't blame him. I know I'm a mess and that it's not fair to him just like it isn't fair to Maze now. I think she's acting like she's asleep, but not fully. Hell, if I were in her shoes I wouldn't trust the addict to keep watch either.

Morning comes eventually though and even before the sun's out fully I can feel the sweat on my skin. My fingers can't stop picking at themselves as the thought of even touching the food or water I have with me makes me want to vomit. Honestly, even without the thought I still kind of want to vomit. I feel like absolute shit. So I do the one thing that I can: hide away in my Mech where I hope the others can't see me. At least when I'm high I don't have to process everything, handle everything. That's the scariest part. I'm not good at the whole handling life thing. I'm emotional to a fault and have special knack for self sabotage.

That's when I feel something sharp cut into my skin. Flinching, I watch whatever it is suddenly leap back out of the hull with a loud croak. Oh shit. Trying to remember every possible thing that Maze said, I take hold of the Mech's controls. It's a good thing too because by the time I've got it powered up I can see that the one frog has turned into a damn army.

"Watch out!"

I try to shout to the others as the mechanical legs beneath me lurch towards the shifting sands of moving masses. Trying to ignore the low grade headache eating away at my attention, I shift the controls to send the dagger right towards the croaking chaos. I've done absolutely nothing since I've been here, but maybe this is something. I just want to show them that despite all the shit, I'm not worthless. I'll prove that to everyone.

With the help of the enthusiastic and intellectual Kiibo, each of them raised a mechanical beast from its sandy grave. Maze didn't understand the point of it until she squished herself inside, pressing buttons and pulling levers to activate its functions. The weapons moved fluidly, but the legs felt clunky, and it screeched as she stomped around in the sand. According to the manual, it was designed for combat against other "Mechs" of similar variety. Hers was shaped vaguely like a bird, but the wings didn't work properly. Shame.

The four of them unanimously decided that the robots were worth keeping. They were good for sleeping and good for their weaponry. She spent several minutes loading its gun with cannon balls she found scattered in the sand. If she was lucky, she could fight from a distance for the next day or so. She didn't like the idea of getting up close and personal to strangers; easiest way to get a knife in your spleen. She'd seen it before. It only takes a couple seconds for fatal stabs to take effect. Before you know it, you're bleeding on the ground and your guts are on the floor.

Maze hoped it was a quick way to die, secretly knowing that it wasn't. (A girl can dream.)

"I'm gonna get a little rest. Wake me up when you need me."

The words of an addict usually meant very little when it came to action. Talon would be suffering withdrawal symptoms soon, and she didn't trust him to keep watch of their makeshift camp with full concentration. He was physically incapable of doing so. Either she let it slide, or she took initiative herself at the cost of losing sleep. She thought it over as she poked tattoos into her skin, listening for suspicious sounds in the night - or at least any that would dare come close to their mechs. The echoes of animals fighting never faltered, and she didn't understand why. She only understood what it meant; no peaceful sleep any time soon.

She gently knocked on Talon's robot when it was his turn. Most of her shift was spent decorating her hair, skin, and the ground. She had drawn many a figure in the sand, only to smear it away with the sole of her boot.

Everything here was short-lived.

Maze pretended to sleep. She was quite good at it, lying and resting with one eye open. If anything jumped at Talon from the shadows, he wouldn't be ready. But she would.

Fortunately, they were left alone.

In the morning, they tested the waters with their mechs, guiding them all the way to a ghost town made of junk and old buildings. It was then that she heard scuttling - a little too close for comfort.

"Watch out!"

Maze could only describe it as a wave of green, spiky lumps rushing past their feet. With the crash of the wave came a line of them, leaping and landing on her shoulder and collar bones. She hissed as they bit - no, scratched? - her skin as if gnawing her to the bone. With her arms in the mech, she was helpless to pull them off.

"Anybody know what these are?!"

She swung her mechanical limbs wildly and slashed them to bits.

"Ugh!"

Surprisingly, sleep came easy.

The arena was oddly quiet besides the random shriek of a mutton the slight whistle of the wind through the trees and as it shifted between buildings. The others decided to take the first few watches, and even in the eerie silence she quickly drifted off into a deep slumber.

Her dreams were full of nothingness.

Black voids with random flashes of light and memories. Death hadn't made an appearance last night.

He hadn't found a way to haunt her yet.

Charlotte couldn't help but grumble as Kiibo worked for the last watch. Her sleep was deep and surprisingly peaceful, the best night's sleep she had experienced since she arrived in the Capitol. Maybe it was the comfort of knowing there was finally people watching her back, or maybe it was the fear of knowing Death was right around the corner. Either way, she decided not to question it.

Her whole life she always asked why her.

But this time she didn't want any answers.

The sun broke across the horizon, and despite the warm air a chill went down her spine. Maybe, it was the start of the new day and the horrors it might bring.

For some reason, she felt safer in the dark.

She stretched her muscles briefly before walking towards Kiibo and Maze. Lottie gently touched each of their shoulders before speaking softly.

"Wake up sleepyheads, it's time to get going."

Her eyes flashed to Talon who was fast asleep not too far off. A sigh escaped her lips as she jabbed her foot into his side. "Time to wake up sleeping beauty, no more time for beauty rest," she said as she rolled her eyes slightly.

The four of them all hopped into their mechs, trying to figure out exactly how they worked while listening to Maze's instructions. Lottie's brow was crinkled as she stared befuddled at all the different buttons and levers. Her eyes began to cross the longer she stared and her brain was about to go into a trance when she heard a warning call.

"Watch out!"

Her head snapped up as a hoard of angry looking frogs hopped towards them.

"Anybody know what these are?!"

"No, but they're pretty small. Can't we just step on them?"

Then before she knew it, Talon and Maze both swung their mechs at the small army. Each of them barely making its mark.

"Wait! How do I work this thing?!"

All the buttons on the dashboard in front of her looked identical. Panic was beginning to spread throughout her body and a gleam of sweat appeared on her forehead. She had no idea what to do, so instead she closed her eyes and let her intuition decide. The sound of a small explosive being fired rang through her ears.

"Nevermind!

Under normal circumstances he might have easily stayed up until dawn, taking all of the watch shifts without blinking an eye. He had trouble sleeping when he had everything required for a proper rest—bed, mattress, at least two sheets- one of which is a linen sheet, the other a quilt -and seven pillows of varying sizes. He liked pillows. But after Maze had gone over the manual with him a bit, and after he'd taken his time to look over the memorabilia posters and firecrackers and static filled frustration and horrendously named food items and -

Well, he woke up before dawn, but after the anthem. Talon was shivering and sweating- as an addict might during the worst of withdrawals. Maze was still on watch, though upon a bit more investigation he determined Lottie was also awake. He wondered about them, spoke softly into his transmitter and wondered if anyone could hear him.

"This is Malaki-Boden W/A, District 8 tribute, codename: K1-B0, also know as: Kiibo. Let hope guide you to dawn."

It was about two hours of lack-of-correspondence before Lottie woke him from his half-slumber with a gentle nudge. He'd grown used to waking up to Caelum jumping on his bed or Tavi and Madison arguing or Eve deciding she's in the mood to play her electric cello piece that morning instead of the classical piano pieces she's always been so adept at-

he had many people he wished he could see when he opened his eyes.

-and for a moment he wondered if he was being too distant from the people around him. He had been studying them, watching their interviews over and over, watching them when their names were called- or not -and then called anyway.

But he knew the best way to make it out was to make friends. Sorry, allies. He wasn't sure he knew the difference, but for some reason there was. Allies and friends were not synonyms.

But he'd been telling their stories while they slept, twisting knobs and sorting through the useful and non-useful static. He heard quite a bit of expletives, a reasonable amount of snoring, and far too many inhuman cries of pain.

A pantheon of machinery fell directly into the triple horn army's ranks- the young king had never been particularly religious. He did enjoy the idea of besting an empire and a god all in the same day, though. His men were fierce warriors and he watched, impressed as always, as they focused the four robotic beings. One of the smaller of them took an excess of the damage from the first wave of attacks, but the young king knew that narrative all too well.

Once upon a time, he was not a young king. In fact, until about twenty minutes ago, he had only been young. Vengeful, sure. Hungry, certainly. Determined, for sure. But royalty was a concept he'd only ever understood in an abstract sort of way, like how he could of course imagine the sensation of having wings and soaring the skies like the pesky birds who loved to swoop down and carry off some of his best men during the middle of a fight. But he wouldn't have known what to do if he woke up tomorrow morning having grown feathers.

He supposed, by this logic, one could truly have said that the young king... how do the kids say it, 'started from the bottom, and now is here' or, something like that?

Regardless, he did not even need to croak a second time. His soldiers were relentless. This was not a trial by combat- the triple horns had already proven themselves as the best. This was sport. This was proof that they were only doing what they were allowed to do.

Already, the young king was drunk with his power. Impressive, how quickly the compassion disappeared when he had nothing to gain from feeling it.

The pantheon tried to smite his entire army- they were unsuccessful. The young king squinted.

Perhaps these were not gods. His forces looked as strong as ever. He planned to keep it that way.

A high pitch whine whirs from the machine around me as I plummet into the froth of fleshy frogs surrounding us. The shrill sound drills into my ears causing my headache to throb violently. Gritting my teeth as salt from my sweat splashes across my tongue, I push through the pain just like I always have. By the time the Mech's blade is connecting to the moving mass, my jaw is so tight I swear my teeth are about to break. I go through all this just to barely make a mark.

"Damn it!"

I just can't do it, can I? Maze is amazing, she's calculative and clever. Lottie is strong, winning wealths like careers are supposed to do. Kiibo is brilliant, genuinely one of the smartest people I think I've ever met. They are doing things, helping each other. Meanwhile, what am I other than a liability? I can't even look straight right now without wanting to vomit. Yet, the real kicker to all of this is that I did this to myself. Drowning on dry land even though I'm hundreds of miles from away the ocean. I just want to feel like I actually can help them, but how am I supposed to do that when I can't even help myself?

Lottie's voice fills the air followed by a sudden blast. At least I'm not the only one struggling to figure out just how the Mechs work. In fact, it doesn't seem like any of us are able to make much of a dent against the formation of frogs. They might be small in size, but they clearly have the numbers over us. We have to do something soon or we could get fully overrun.

"I'm gonna call that our trial run."

I say to the others trying to at least lighten the tension of the situation. That's something I can do, right? But even it doesn't last long as the frogs begin to lash out again. One tries to get through the hatch above me, but I'm able to shake it free just as the others deal with their own issues. Issues that lead to a hard hit onto Kiibo.

Taking a deep breath, I close my eyes and try to stop the world from spinning in-between the throbbing throes of my mind. Several less than dry coughs sputter out of my lips, but I refuse to let my stomach give way. I need to at least get through this fight first. I need to at least do something more than just throw up while they are getting attacked because once the high is gone all that's left is the regret. I need something more than that or I'm not going to make it. I'm not going to want to.

"Stay there Kiibo, I'm coming!"

My hands heave the levers forward as the spider legs below me screech and then move. Opening my eyes, I try to keep focus just on Kiibo and the frogs around them. I let my Mech saunter and sway however much it wants as long as it gets me closer. Only ounce I'm practically on top of the croaking cries do I flip the switch for the dagger and use the lever to try and guide the blade forward.

Just a little more, I think silently to myself.

Maze didn't expect any of her allies to know the answer, but she was disappointed anyway. An up close and personal view of their slimy bodies revealed a frog-like nature. She didn't appreciate the one that hopped on top of her nose, nearly obscuring her view with its ghastly horn. The horn was stained with her blood, to add insult to injury. She shook her head furiously to loosen its grip. More of them poured through the gaps in her armored suit, and she could feel them scraping the undersides of her arms.

Through gritted teeth, she vented her frustrations at Lottie, who frantically pushed the buttons inside her own machine. "Wait! How do I work this thing?!"

"You were supposed to figure that out yesterday!"

That was the whole point of digging them out and reading the manuels. Maze had even decorated hers as a way of claim - galaxy stickers and whatever else she could scavenge. It was cute, and it complimented the blue tint of the paintjob. She understood most of the buttons and levers inside. She was prepared to start yelling instructions if needed, until Lottie launched a cannon ball into the masses. Hardly a dent.

Maze sighed harshly. What the hell were they supposed to do about an endless army of horn frogs?

Kiibo and Talon understood the assignment. She didn't know what Talon was doing differently, but he managed to spray a line of frog guts into the wall of a building. Perhaps the withdrawal was making him desperate, or he was lucky. Maze was grateful either way.

"Keep doing that. Maybe if we're lucky, we can kill all of them by sunset."

Pessimism wouldn't help, but it was all too tempting. Sometimes all one needed was an attitude problem to make the bad stuff go away.

It was rather sudden how light-headed he felt, how much shock his body was experiencing as the machine he'd practically attached himself to started to burst and burn and shatter in all the wrong places. His skin- his skin, he still couldn't tell whether it was his or not, but...

Burns burst and melted as he instinctively slapped the pain scorching his bicep. It pulled away; his skin, from his bicep, as if his fingers were made of glue. The skin just, stuck. To say it didn't hurt would be a lie, but he wasn't actually sure how to react to seeing his own skin upon his fingerprints.

Could he get away with murder?

The small one seemed to be leading. Or, at the very least, it barked the most at the others. He croaked at his men and made sure they knew to focus her. She was only trying to help her friends, of course, but cutting the head off of the rhog is the best way to avoid its horns. The young king understood- sometimes battles like these were years in the making. He'd waited, bided his time, suffered through the drought-stricken badlands, lived on scum. He'd even shielded his own followers from the baking sun. Not a brood mother, but a parent in his own right. One who raised his army with the same care as if it had been his own children. He loved his army, and recognized that each individual piece was invaluable.

But, ultimately, the army was his to command. And he was used to overcoming. And his numbers were so plentiful now- actually bigger, if he accounted for the drifters from the other side who swore their loyalty instead of losing their heads to the young king's forces.
