It tastes like copper and bleeds from my chest like lead. Red on my hands and a quiet face on my lap. I don't know how long I've been here, but the smoldering rubble is only slightly sheathed in smoke now. Yet still one of my hands is brushing back the threads of her hair as if she's really only sleeping. It's a lie I know, one I've told myself before, but at least this time I'm not throwing pills down my throat and watching the mist take away the edges of the truth. I'm just kneeling here amid the rubble watching the shifting screens shudder.
"You got a light?"
The whisper is barely more than a breath meant for ears already sewn shut by death. Of course she doesn't. The taste of the tears trickling into my mouth is proof enough of that. The only smoke left is that of ruin and not of euphoria. What once hung like wreaths around our heads now lingers as a dying breath. My head falls forward until our foreheads, one warm and one cool, press softly against each other. I'm so tired.
The sound of static pulls me from my fallen figure. There, within the low lit embers of her dead bear, an orange light flickers softly. Is the intercom on even in the destruction? Is there anyone left to even listen? My eyes turn towards the screens again as I watch Kiibo kill a girl I've never seen before. It looks wrong, broken, like everything up until now has been undone except for one word: "Friend."
I'm not sure the sound even makes it out over the wavelengths, but my head falls forward again with another subtle sob. I'm going to be sick. I can feel the nausea finally catching up to me, but I don't want to with Parker still... I force my hands to finally move her slowly off of my lap. There's a lingering thumb on her cheek before I finally crumple over the side of the jagged steel and let loose anything left inside of my stomach.
There's no reprieve in the burning bile though.
Coughs are still jolting my sides when I catch another glimpse of the screens. This time it's Maze only... Wait, stop! My feet are shuffling, stumbling, forward before I fall just as her canon crests in crimson on the screen. This can't be happening. Maze always was the one who... Both her and Parker and now it's all just...
I'm crawling to my Mech before I'm even thinking. I'm barreling across the scrapyard, now littered with mechanical joints, before I'm even processing. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore or why I'm doing it. Parker's blood is a coat of red flaking off of my hands and Maze's mech is a steel graveyard slowly growing on the horizon. I don't think I can stop, I don't know how to stop, I just want to be-
My mech slams to halt thrusting my body up against one of the nearby walls with a gasp. I'm not alone. Stunned for a second, I stand there slanted by the opening where the door once hung staring at the shape of Kiibo slumped by the side of Maze's mech. He came for her too. If the thundering in my head wasn't so harsh I think I'd be smiling, but instead I simply slip free from my steel suit and fall to his side.
There's silence where there should be Maze's heartbeat.
My head falls to Kiibo's shoulder as my eyes stare numbly at the metal mech before us. His warmth is gentle against the pressure of my cheek. It's comforting compared to the chill of Parker's sleep. It makes me think of the last words I heard Kiibo say before this all began. It feels more like an echo of the ghosts who now sit beside us where we can't see. "We are still friends right?"
I squeeze tightly onto his arm.
"I think so."
That's when the Nakom come. Their wings bring a calmness I wasn't expecting. It accompanies me through the empty night as I avoid the call of sleep. I feel like if I stop moving then the world will keep spinning without me. I don't know how to be this person. Strong enough to be who I am, but weak enough to not be able to stop anything that's happened. Why is life built in a way that makes me feel as though I am losing more than myself? Painted nails feel wrong when my friend's blood is trapped beneath them.
Shivering from a non-existent cold, my mech shudders to a stop. There's another shape up ahead, a boy amid the breaking beams of dawn. It feels weird in a way that I can still find someone new in this place. What has he seen over the last week? Has he lost anything that he can't replace? I've never been the one to start fights, yet I'm already lining up the levers just like Maze taught me as my headache slowly rumbles.
The gears of my Mech click.
I think I know what I want. I think that's why I'm not afraid of fighting anymore. The shivers and shakes are going to go away soon and then what's left is for me to decide. Parker saw the mask and didn't care, Maze helped me find the strength to want to take it off, Lottie called the sneak peek she saw beautiful, and Kiibo, well, Kiibo is friends with both mask and maskless me. I want the chance to live life as the person they all saw. It's like Parker said: I want to be enough.
"My name is Talon." The static of the intercom fizzles as I pause for a moment staring out towards the boy's silhouette and the rising sun. "Do you regret that you're here?"
My hands push the levers forward.
"Cause I think it may have saved me or-" the dagger from my mech deploys as the distance between he and I closes, "it at least made me want to save myself."
Hope, isn't that right Kiibo and Parker?
