he was always a quiet, timid child, who grew into quiet, timid man. he was the boy who sat at the back of the classroom, who never raised his hand to speak. his mother said he had been a complacent baby, who seldom cried. they were poor, but not so much that they did not have food on the table. they had just enough to be somewhat comfortable, but nothing more. once kieran was old enough, he began working in the lumber yards after school to help provide for his family. his mother hadn't asked him to do this, and even protested it, but he told her that it was what he would end up doing after he graduated from school anyway — there was no harm in starting now.

he didn't mind the lumber yards. they were quieter than the school, and even though his hands have begun to callous from the hard work, he found that it gave him some peace. there was honor in the hardness of his palms and the scars along his fingers. they were a testament to his dedication to his family, his caring for them. nothing else mattered.
