The hospital gets barricaded four hours in. It isn't until hour two that people figure out something is wrong. The first body that was taken to the basement for transport goes missing. It's a Rose Plague patient, thirty-eight, male, who was declared dead approximately twenty-eight hours earlier, and it takes a staff team of five to come to the conclusion that a dead body can't just get up and walk away.
Someone must have just moved it.
But then they find the body in the lobby. It's climbed over the reception desk and is already half finished devouring the receptionist. Clara's still sitting in her chair with the appointment book open, but her head is missing and both of her arms are gone.
The panic is a little delayed, but it gets there. It worms through the clinic like a disease, follows the path that the plague took and goes after the weakest first.
By hour four, it's mostly quiet. People are either dead or dying or have locked themselves in a storage closet and started praying. A group of interns had tried the doors around hour three, but they were all blocked from the outside.
It's logical, one of them said, that once people outside understood what was happening, they'd try to contain it.
It doesn't stop two of the other interns from bursting into tears and the other two to retreat further into the clinic to try and find a place to wait it out. Blake is one of those other ones. It's Sammy's idea to wait it out, but it's Blake's idea to go up to one of the offices where the furniture is actually sturdy enough to keep the door wedged closed. They tip over a filing cabinet and use that, and then tuck themselves under the desk and each pretend that they're not just waiting to die.
