After escaping the massacre - barely.
After breaking glass instead of bread with Axyl.
After slipping on ice as he stumbled out of the house.
After, Garnet ran towards the safety of the trees. They didn't look a thing like trees back home; these were spindly evergreens literally pinecones. These trees stood as sentinels and he had no doubt the only thing living in them were the beady glass camera eyes of the Gamemakers. But at least they were trees and not whatever blinked in the distance and maybe if he found one big enough he could build a shelter...
He shivered violently despite the articles of clothing he'd collected.
The snow crunched underfoot, both loud and surprisingly quiet. At some point he'd stopped running. The trees grew more densely together and he found he did not have the strength to bleed, navigate and march onwards, all at once. So he walked, slowing a bit with every step, and he listened.
This time when he encountered another tribute, at least he knew it was coming. Spear in one hand and leather pack, nearly full, awkwardly jammed under his other arm, he inched around a pine's trunk.
His breath, fogging in the cold air, caught.
And then he whistled through an exhale.
"Oh my, I didn't think I could feel so relieved," he said as he let the spear drop to the snowy earth. "I've found some med supplies that might be help. I... Thank you both. For saving me back there." He toed the snow, unable to look either Rhys or Jericho in the eye.
