I was starting to get used to the feeling of having Rhys in my arms as the carriage was taking us away from the mines. This was more than just because we were tied together. If I ever got out of this Arena, I would need to explore using rope in certain activities. No stars danced or painted the sky with the faces of the others, so there were still 20 other tributes to worry about. The three of us felt safe in the carriage, protected against the cold, and I held Rhys in my arms through the night. Even in the morning, when Garnet’s beast pulled us towards the forest, we were still in each other's arms, Garnet giving us a smirk whenever he looked over our way. I should have known peace would only be temporary when we heard a screech ring out through the Arena, too loud to have been from an animal.
“Rise and shine, tributes!” One of the male Gamemakers calls out. I couldn’t tell which voice it belonged to, though. ”A deadly snowstorm is on the way, and unless you want to become popsicles, the only place you should be right now is The Mines! Hurry now, as we’re going to play a game…”
The beast knew what to do before Garnet even had time to call out, and the carriage made a sharp turn back to where we came. I tightened my grip around Rhys, trying to keep him stable in the bouncing carriage as we moved incredibly fast. I had my eyes shut as this was faster than I was used to. I didn’t ride in cars around the District, having lived close enough to the heart of District Ten that a car wasn’t necessary. Those who lived and farmed on the outskirts of town needed one, but I found that riding on my horse was enough to get around. It wasn’t uncommon to see horses riding alongside cars in the heart of town, but this beast moved faster than any horse could gallop.
I could already feel the temperature rapidly drop as we got closer to the mines, and I found myself praying for the sweltering heat of DIstrict Ten’s summers. What I couldn’t give to be working under the sweltering sun, with Mom reminding me to put on sunscreen as she handed me an ice-cold sweet tea. Instead, I’m shivering as the wind bore through the fabric of the carriage. Once we made it to the mines, we bolted out, careful not to get tangled in the rope that held us together. Making our way deeper into the mines is when we hear, yet again, the Gamemaker’s voice.
"Treasure is buried deep in these mines; there are new tunnels for you to explore! There are a few maps with a juicy X on them down there somewhere, too! You're not alone down here; it is a full party! Remember, some of your knives are lacking blood...let the treasure hunt begin!"
He sounded way too fucking chipper about that.
I was grateful that I was still tied to Garnet and Rhys because if I had to find my way through the mines by myself, I would have another panic attack in a completely new layout. But together, we made our way through the new maze of coal, where even here, the cold managed to penetrate deep into the veins of the earth until I stopped us, thinking I saw movement ahead of us. Motioning for us to keep quiet, I started to tiptoe forward slowly, using some of the skills I learned in the Training Center, when I noticed that it was Sage. I sighed in relief, and while Sage and I never made a deal to not target each other, we were friendly enough before the Games started.
“Sage, are you ok? How are you holding up?” I asked as I made my way forward, my hands up in good faith.
