Strange what mortality means, and how some simply choose to defy the parameters that they must live within. Not once has the knight slowed when faced with the hail of his enemy's fists, but not once has his enemy subsided in his attacks.

The knight, relentless, inevitable.

And the boy, relentless, just as stubborn.

Stone crumbles slowly out of the hole in its breastplate. It falls to the branch at its feet, the pebbles bounce off the branch and then they disappear down, down, down into the murky haze.

It is hardly a loss, how can it be when there is nothing there for the knight to truly lose.

His heart went still many years ago.

But then what is it that seems to burn, to twinge, when it stares down at the bloody knuckles of its opponent.

He doesn't know.

He doesn't have time to know.

The knight raises a hand as his opponent's fist, angry and raw, pulls back to hit him again. Instead of letting the blow land, he catches it in his palm, and closes his hand lightly over the wounds.

He got what he came here for.

The knight lets go.

And steps off of the branch.
