It was here, ironically, that she felt most comfortable.
Comfortable was a relative term, of course. Here, she felt more at home than she did among people; the soothing solitude of the open forest was . But the last time Cadia had known true comfort outside of her dreams, she had still been Lalik, and she hadn't been alone. Now, she was only half a person, her better half lost forever to the world, memories her only companions.
Not that she much wanted anyone else in her life, not now. Once she would have, but now she knew- humans were cruel, selfish, only interested in themselves. Cadia- her Cadia, not the Cadia she was now- hadn't been like that. She had been a star in an otherwise empty sky, who could have lit the way for them all. Cadia- Lalik, then- had laughed at all the little acts of kindness, smiled at how her friend would go out of her way to help people.
She had laughed. She hadn't realized just how precious she was.
And now she was alone
Hands restraining her- she struggled to break free. Someone was screaming- was it her? She hadn't believed them, not at first, not until she saw the body. She still didn't believe it. It wasn't true, it couldn't be, it was all a trick, some silly joke, and Cadia would stand up in a minute and they would laugh and embrace and everything would be okay...
"Lalik, there's nothing you can do for her now."
Finally she wrenched free, ran and fell to her knees by her fallen friend's side. She grabbed Cadia's hand, squeezing it tightly, as though she could pull the girl back to her by force. "Cadia, come back! Please. Please, come back! Don't leave me alone!"
"Lalik..." Her mother's arms wrapped around her, and she turned to bury her face into Kharlana's hair, sobbing desperately. She was alone, for the first time since she could remember.
Alone...
"Don't leave me alone," she whispered, and for a moment emotion broke through the guards she had so carefully set up, her eyes spilling over with sorrow and desperation. She pressed her lips together, fighting back the tears that threatened to overwhelm her. She couldn't afford to cry, to let down her guard for even an instant. She couldn't...
The moment was gone as quickly as it had come, and Cadia reached up to brush away the single tear that remained. In the same motion she drew her knife and turned, eyes scanning the trees to be sure no one had seen her. If anyone had noticed her moment of weakness-
Just in case, she turned and ran to the nearest tree, scaling it until she was high enough to be partially hidden in the leaves, but not too high for the branches to break or interfere with her movement. Standing on one of the more even branches, poised to fight, she slowly moved her gaze through the forest, alert to every movement, every sound, every rustling leaf.
If anyone attacked, she was ready.
