Julian blinked as he stood before Grind as he confessed the loss of his father. Slowly his hands dropped from his hips as he lost some of his steam. Julian tried to maintain his haughty tone as he began to speak, but it was costing him too much energy as it was.
“Well,” he began, “Well… I don’t…" Julian looked up and caught Grind’s eye.
Julian looked down at his feet as he began to blush. He scrunched up his face in anger as hatred for himself bubbled inside of him. Not only did he feel a moment of pity for his dead lover’s nemesis, but he had felt a tug in his heart when he had gazed in Grind’s pained eyes.
There was no denying that Grind was attractive, but Julian never looked at him in that way. There had never been a boy who could catch his eye the way Midas could. Midas’s eyes were so genuine and kind; there was no feeling in the world that could ever match what Julian felt when he looked into those deep, brown eyes. Suddenly though, when those eyes weren’t around to watch with envy, Julian actually noticed something appealing in Grind. Maybe that was why those two had never gotten along; perhaps Midas sensed some yet undiscovered threat to his bond with Julian.
None of this truly mattered though. Julian was broken now; there was only the shell of his former self. He decided the day Midas entered the Arena that no matter what would come next; his heart would never belong to another. He had known all along the weakness that came with opening his heart, and he would never make the mistake again. Furious at himself, and now furious at Grind for even bringing up these thoughts, Julian looked back up with a glare.
“I… don’t… care…” Julian said through gritted teeth and turned to finish his trek back home. There was a new Julian in District 2. His heart had died with Midas and so he would now let it be buried with him. This was the new Julian Bryze: cruel, spiteful and heartless.
