Shelby seemed to zone out. Astrid started to talk about the maps, but Shelby was thinking about something else.
Oh what am I going to do?
Shelby couldn't think quickly anymore. Her brain seemed to have shut down. Her truths would be spread. She would have to run. She would have to run forever. Shelby couldn't be here when the peacekeeper arrived either. Alex wasn't goana let Shelby get any of the orphans into any of this. It was her own problem now. She didn't deserve their help anyway..... If she stayed, the peacekeeper would either return her to her parents, or do expirements on her, and each one was just as terrifying. If her parents found out she had a son too-
Shelby sighed. And what would happen, if they took her to be expiremented on? Kiel would be left to fend for himself all alone. But worse could happen. They could expirement on Kiel too. And if Shelby and Kiel left, everyone would think she just disapeared again, like she often did.
If she disapeared, nobody would care. Nobody would notice.
“I must go right now. The rain has stopped and it is dawn already. If you need to go with the child we can go along together. I looked at Kane’s map and there is not much of a difference from where I’m going, except for maybe the last few roads leading towards the other side of the district.”
Shelby listened to Astrid.
Maybe just go with them. You could hide in the woods awhile.
But what if the peacekeepers tried to find out where she was from the orphans? Oh well, they wouldn't have a clue. Unless they said I was hiding in the woods.... But Shelby would have to take this risk.
"I'm coming with you. I can't take the risk of staying here. I'll walk with you, but after that I'm going to go hide..."
Shelby said this as if she was simply going to the market to buy eggs. She went upstairs, and packed a bag with the two pairs of clothes she owned, some dried crackers to eat, and some of the baby's toys and clothes. Then she put the tan backpack on her back, and wrapped Kiel in the warmest blankets she could find. She kissed her home goodbye, because she knew for now on she probably would not have a home anymore. She had no people to say goodbye to, so she fled back down the stairs.
Shelby was slightly more confident than before but just as scared. Kiel slept soundly in her arms. She held him proctectively in her arms.
"Are you ready to leave?" She asked.
Shelby could hear some of the children starting to wake.
