Changing the world?

My hands are covered in his blood, but frankly, I don't care. The bandage on my wrapped hand is soaked with the red liquid, and for a second I consider taking off the wrapping and giving it to Jack to use for his arm, but I figure that some of my blood is on it, too. Hmm. But if his blood is on it, it could get into the healing wounds and things could get bad. I'll think about it later, though.
I nod back at him as a "you're welcome." Really, it was nothing. We need each other to survive and I'm fairly sure that he'd do the same thing to me if I had a tracker in me, and besides, now we won't be tracked, so we can rest peacefully. And then he starts laughing. As relieved as I am to be safe, I can't bring myself to laugh, so I just sit there and smile, my knees brought up to my chest and my arms hugging them. I don't think I've ever saved anyone's life before, so this is a first for me. I feel a bit sheepish about it when he put it that way, but I felt good about it too.
I reach over and pat his shoulder. It's not his fault. I'm sure no one else would've realized it if they had been in the same situation he was in. Hell, I wouldn't even have noticed it if I hadn't latched onto his arm just then. I look into his pale green eyes and shake my head. No, he's not an idiot. He shouldn't feel that way about himself.
Looking down at the bandage on my hand, I carefully begin to pick at it and unwrap it. There's gauze over the amputated parts and neither were bleeding anymore, so that was a good sign. And there was hardly more than a few specks of blood on the gauze, so I figured that the wrap would be safe for Jack to use since it had his blood on it already. Once the wrapping was off, I handed the bundle to him to use on his shoulder. My hand felt fine and I was even warming up just a bit. Then I carefully peeled off the gauze, wincing as it took off a few scabs, and then there it was: an empty spot where my finger used to be and half of another finger. It's the first time I've seen my hand since the amputation, and I have to say, it kind of freaks me out.
