Does, Says, Thinks
Quiet steps sounded like heavy footfalls in the silence. Kiar looked around the open field for the fifth time to see if anyone was following her, once again seeing no one. She grimaced and lowered her gaze to the ground before her, internally chiding herself for being so jumpy. She supposes it was to be expected, considering the ideas that had been tossed about, and the constant nervous warnings of her parents. For as long as she could remember, her mother and father had always told her, "Always be aware of what's around you, don't let trouble catch you off guard." She had always shrugged off their warnings then, but the constant presence on her mind had driven the practice into her brain, and now she was wary of everything and everyone. True, it had helped her out of a few close encounters, but most of the time it just caused her to overreact to things. Such as now. Her gaze shot up as a twig snapped, blue-gray eyes searching for any signs of other life, but they found none. She let out a soft growl. I need to relax, there's no one here but me. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone, or something was watching her, following her.
Despite the chilly weather, she wore only a short-sleeved shirt and jeans, both well-worn and showing signs of use. Some would question her lack of a coat, especially because it was winter and the days were growing colder, but Kiar didn't mind. The cold didn't bother her, plus her family didn't have the money to afford a new jacket. She would never admit it though, she always told anyone who asked that she didn't need a coat, she was perfectly comfortable without one.
She lifted her head and gave another search of the field, sure that someone besides herself was there. She could have sworn she heard something, and again. It was as if someone had taken a couple of heavy steps, creating two soft thuds that were just loud enough to reach her sharp hearing. Gritting her teeth, she stopped walking. She would wait for this person, or whatever it was, to show itself. Come out, come out, wherever you are. She thought. I know you're there, the game is up. Now show yourself before I have to come and find you.
