Feeling her stomach turn in unsettling knots, Marietta dug her toes into the warm sand, watching the grains fall over her pale skin. By the huge sweet smile the boy had plastered across his face, she'd say that he was very happy she had chosen to join him. She felt pretty happy about it too, it was just harder to show. Wrapping her arms around her knees, she peeked at him through her long thick lashes as he began to chatter.
MARIETTA! You are not some blushing school girl! Stop acting like one! Grow a pair! "Oh, and I do. Swimming always makes me hungry, and I'm sure... that," She ducked her head in embarrassment, hiding both a slight quirk of her lips and pink cheeks. You are hopeless. "has left you starving. So! Have a sandwich. And a pear. And some cola. Just help yourself to the basket and its contents." Ooh, food. Do you think you can stop blushing and ducking your head to even look at it? Picking her head up, she examined the contents of the basket, plucking a single green pear out with long delicate fingers. She examined it, her eyes narrowing as she scanned its flesh before her eyes darted to him and back to the pear again. She took a quick bite, savoring the fruit before looking at him again through her dark fringe of lashes.
She was trying hard not to be so pathetic, blushing and ducking and hardly looking at him. He was cute, sweet, and so far, very nice to her in light of recent events. She'd have to thank her sisters for fighting this morning and making her want to escape the house. Usually she didn't leave so quickly despite the fact that they fought practically every morning.
It was hard, trying to talk and look at this boy. She really was trying. She didn't mean to be so shy. Why can't you say anything? Anything would be better than what you're doing now! She chided herself for being so odd, just stealing little glances at his handsome face choosing the face of her pear to admire instead. It was sweet and juicy and its flesh was crisp. She ate it with delicate bites, stealing glances at him. She didn't want to come off as a pig or something.
Marietta turned at the exact moment that the boy stretched in his slouched position, closing his eyes and inhaling the sea air. His mouth hung open for a few moments and she nearly smiled, taking another bite out of her pear to force it away. It was then, as she munched quietly, that he realized she was still there and clamped his mouth shut, sitting up more.
Taking another bite out of her pear she turned her eyes to the vast ocean in front of her. Despite the fact that she had caught nothing today and this vast landscape had nearly become her watery grave, she had been having a good day. Nothing could dampen it at this moment.
The pillowy clouds above her caught her attention as she finished her pear and her thoughts drifted off again to chide her about her shyness. His voice cut through her thoughts like a hot knife, starling her.
"Y'know, with all that's happened, I haven't even had the chance to ask: what's your name? Mine's Maverick, Basking."
She stared at him, looking more like a deer in headlights than a sixteen year old girl. Her wide blue eyes stared at him before clamping shut in a few furious blinks. My name.
"Um," She started, shaking her head slightly to focus more. "Mar-Marietta. My name is Marietta. Marietta Toppari." She answered in a shy voice, nearly smiling at him.
