It was considered bad manners to talk to your opponent during fencing bouts, but Ares was sorely tempted to break that understanding, to get under the Bryze girl's skin that much more. Not like he needed the edge; he was already ahead in the fight and he didn't think she'd be able to regain the ground that she'd lost to him. Sure, his lead was slight, and things could turn around in an instant, but he was confident that he'd come out on top one way or another. Though it wasn't visible behind the mesh of his mask, Ares's eyes glinted cold, self-assured, the way Career eyes were meant to glint.

Though the Bryze girl managed to make parry and nail him in the hip with a successful riposte, Ares still wasn't particularly concerned. She was emotional, temperamental, and therefore didn't have the makings of someone who would make it very much farther in the competition — in fact, he was still certain that she would not be moving on past this round — and, if it came down to it, in the Games themselves. Being vengeful only got you so far before you snapped; discipline was infinitely more useful than even the most productive temper. He rolled his eyes at her — not that she could see it — and lunged hard.

The one thing she felt with each strike from the pathetic example of a career boy that stood in front of her? Humor. As each strike grew more and more fierce, she was only deflecting them more easily, and the most comical thing was that he was getting more angry with every turn that came. Now it was her turn to do the manipulation. The one thing that she did better than anything else. She could trick a person into having their sword pointed at themselves, rather than her if she wanted to. All she had to do was keep letting this boy think he had a chance, when she knew that she had this thing. The more and more frustrated he was, the harder he was trying to get her back, the weaker he was. He simply wasn't good enough to pass on to the next round, it was as simple as that. Scarlette? Of course she was, and she was willing to prove it.

As the match wore on, Ares had the sneaking suspicion that the Bryze girl was trying to copy him somehow, though perhaps not physically. They'd traded a few attacks, all of which had been parried easily, but not much else. He considered trying to force her to the end of the strip, to back her into a corner and lunge, leaving her nowhere to go, but as he advanced across the strip, he saw an opening, which he refused to pass up. Sometimes tactics had to take a back seat to instinct.

Deciding to worry less about his opponent and more about his own actions, Ares focused on each part of his body as it came together to move him down the strip, to move his weapon towards her. He payed attention to his feet, moving them with precision, keeping them pointed at the appropriate angle and keeping them the appropriate distance apart. Gliding down the strip as opposed to galloping, Ares's torso remained at a uniform height as he wove his blade around hers, not letting his body fall out of balance, even when he lunged.
