I sit terrified, his joke making me blush more than he understands. If only he knew I had already thought about that...but not in a make me feel better way...in a more personal way. I keep my eyes on my desk, knowing that if I look up he will be gone and the others eyes will be on me. I hear the clock ticking by and I notice the teacher talking about some sort of mathematical equation that makes no sense to me. Who really needs to know what x+y- -4 is anyway. I look over and a boy with dark hair and dark eyes is snickering looking at me and I look down quickly. I hear him whisper someone to the boy next to him and they both chuckle. The heat rises to my cheeks and I keep staring at my desk. I think about Jack and hope that maybe he is thinking about me too. There's something I instinctively trust about him. It frustrates me that his smile keeps popping into my head. I remember the feeling of his strong hand around mine and my lips start to pull up in a smile.
The boys are laughing a little harder now and the teacher stops and looks at them. They stop and I hold my breath. I know they're talking about me, think of things to ridicule me about. My dirty hair, my messy clothes (at least my borrow blouse made me feel a little more confident), and more than anything they'd tease me about the fact I never say a word. Suddenly it hit me, they weren't going to tease me about any of that. It was about Jack. How could someone as sour as me have a boy as handsome as him talking to her. My heart started racing, as I felt their eyes on me again. Please don't let them say anything to me, I pray. The small clock on the wall ticks on as I keep my head down and my eyes away from every. Finally the lunch bell rings and I stay sitting, waiting for the rush of people to pass.
The two boys start heading my way, when the teacher steps in front of them. I can hear them say my name several times as they head out into the hallway to file into the lunch room.
"You've been gone for a few weeks Miss Lyvers. You know that is not acceptable. I hope you've not been galavanting around like some crazy hooligan." She scolds. "I could report you if you don't start showing up more often."
"I'm sorry, I will try to make it more frequently." I stutter, my eyes still on my desk.
