The way Devroux is staring me down is new. I've never seen the guy mad. Not even once. I've seen him half-frozen, scared, sad but mostly just balanced out as can be. I'm not quite sure why he's so upset either. It's not like I knew about this. For me life as it was was over so all I could do was drink away the pain.
His attitude makes me a little angry as well. Despite him drowning me in the lake I've kept calm and even asked for his help and simple nod won't do.
"Ease up on me, man. It's not like I knew I still had a shot at seeing them." I growl in a low drawl. To be honest I still doubt it very much.
"What is it to you anyway? Why do YOU care? It's my damn life." I practically spit at him. There goes my temper again, which seems to be worse under the influence of alcohol.
Angrily I get up to get some water and realize that I'm soaked from head to toe, which didn't even occur to me so far. "What the heck."
Clumsily I attempt to strip my wet pants and shirt off but they cling to me like a second skin and I can't get my shirt over my shoulder. Instead I run into the kitchen counter like an idiot and knock myself on my ass. Damn booze. Under any other circumstances this would have been hilarious but now that I'm angry it just pissed me off to no end so I kick at whatever gets in my path until I finally get that wet fabric over my head and toss it on the floor.
Right then my parents are at the front door returning home from wherever they have been and all it takes to completely set me off is my mothers worried but annoyed look.
I stare back at her and then toss the next best thing, which happens to be the bread box on the counter across the room. "What the fuck do you all know?"
My mother steps over, picks up the box and stares me down just like Devroux did. "Oh, I know! I know exactly, Jack." And she's right. She lost her son to the games. If anybody knows then my mother and father.
Her jaw is working, then she steps uncomfortably close and looks up at my face. "It's time to get a grip on yourself, boy."
Only then does she notice Devroux and nodds at him. "You're back....good."
She turns to me again and adds in a very serious, almost threatening tone. "Maybe you should thank your friend for saving your life. Without his blood you'd be dead."
I'm shocked. I had no idea about this and Devroux never mentioned anything. All I knew is that he kept me company. And here I am screaming at him and insulting him. My jaw drops as I look at him unable to find the right words.
